Optimizing HIV Partner Services for Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Previously Diagnosed With HIV: A Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV Partner Services (HIV-PS) is a vital strategy for identifying and linking individuals to treatment and prevention; however, its population-level impact has been limited. This study investigated the potential impact of expanding HIV-PS to include previously diagnosed individuals and a broader sexual partner network in reducing HIV incidence among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). METHODS: Stochastic network models were used to simulate HIV and bacterial sexually transmitted infection transmission within male same-sex partnerships in Atlanta. Two primar

FaceTouch: Detecting hand-to-face touch with supervised contrastive learning to assist in tracing infectious diseases.

Through our respiratory system, many viruses and diseases frequently spread and pass from one person to another. Covid-19 served as an example of how crucial it is to track down and cut back on contacts to stop its spread. There is a clear gap in finding automatic methods that can detect hand-to-face contact in complex urban scenes or indoors. In this paper, we introduce a computer vision framework, called FaceTouch, based on deep learning. It comprises deep sub-models to detect humans and analyse their actions. FaceTouch seeks to detect hand-to-face touches in the wild, such as through video

Health worker perspectives on barriers and facilitators of tuberculosis investigation coverage among index case contacts in rural Southwestern Uganda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In 2012, the World Health Organization recommended screening and investigation of contacts of index tuberculosis patients as a strategy to accelerate detection of tuberculosis (TB) cases. Nine years after the adoption of this recommendation, coverage of TB contact investigations in Uganda remains low. The objective of this study was to examine health care providers' perceptions of factors influencing coverage of TB contact investigations in three selected rural health facilities in Mbarara district, southwestern Uganda. METHODS: This study identified provider opinions on the barri

Outcome of Candida auris contact investigations conducted in a 6 month period at a New York City hospital.

Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant fungus that has led to health care-associated outbreaks globally. Contact investigations for new cases of Candida auris are a recommended infection prevention practice; however, there is limited knowledge and experience with such investigations. We describe our institution's experience from June 2018 through January 2019.

Contact investigation in healthcare personnel exposed to pediatric patients with pulmonary tuberculosis at the pediatric ward, Vajira hospital, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is an important public health problem, and airborne transmission is easily transmitted. Latent TB infection (LTBI) detection and treatment is the key strategy to prevent TB. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to perform contact investigation of LTBI in healthcare personnel (HCPS) working with pediatric patients with active pulmonary TB and report the side effects of 12-week-isoniazid and rifapentine (3HP). METHODS: This contact investigation reviewed HCPS who were in close contact with pediatric pulmonary TB. Close contact with pulmonary TB is defined as contact for 8

Predictors of free-roaming domestic dogs' contact network centrality and their relevance for rabies control.

Free roaming domestic dogs (FRDD) are the main vectors for rabies transmission to humans worldwide. To eradicate rabies from a dog population, current recommendations focus on random vaccination with at least 70% coverage. Studies suggest that targeting high-risk subpopulations could reduce the required vaccination coverage, and increase the likelihood of success of elimination campaigns. The centrality of a dog in a contact network can be used as a measure of its potential contribution to disease transmission. Our objectives were to investigate social networks of FRDD in eleven study sites in

Preferences for Expedited Partner Therapy Among Adolescents in an Urban Pediatric Emergency Department: A Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVES: Expedited partner therapy (EPT) refers to treating sexual partners of patients with sexually transmitted infections by providing prescriptions or medications to give to their partners. Expedited partner therapy is not routinely prescribed in the emergency department (ED). Our objective was to explore adolescent preferences for EPT use in the ED. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study using surveys and semistructured interviews in one urban ED. Sexually active patients aged 15 to 19 years completed an anonymous survey eliciting (1) sexual history and risky sexual behaviors, (2

Unnamed Partners From Syphilis Partner Services Interviews, 7 Jurisdictions.

BACKGROUND: Reducing transmission depends on the percentage of infected partners treated; if many are missed, impact on transmission will be low. Traditional partner services metrics evaluate the number of partners found and treated. We estimated the proportion of partners of syphilis patients not locatable for intervention. METHODS: We reviewed records of early syphilis cases (primary, secondary, early latent) reported in 2015 to 2017 in 7 jurisdictions (Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, New York City, and San Francisco). Among interviewed syphilis patients, we determin

Investigation of Tuberculosis in a High School - San Antonio, Texas, 2012.

On February 21, 2012, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (SAMHD) Tuberculosis Clinic was notified that two students at Madison High School had laboratory-confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). During March-September 2012, public health officials from SAMHD collaborated with the school district to conduct an outbreak investigation that included performing tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) on high-risk contacts of active TB patients. To ensure compliance, all TSTs were performed at the school. Initial screening was conducted as soon as a contact was identified and was followed by a second T

Behavioural and emotional responses to the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Nigeria: a narrative review.

This paper reviews the behavioural and emotional responses to the 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Nigeria as documented in scientific publications and portrayed in the media between 21 July 2014 and 30 March 2015. The outbreak generated national interest and there were reports of patients suspected of having Ebola being avoided for fear of contracting the disease, misconceptions about EVD prevention and protests against locations of EVD-treatment centres. Suspected and confirmed EVD patients, as well as healthcare workers (HCW) who treated them, faced stigma and discrimination. The

[When to carry out contact investigations in shigellosis: no need for extensive contact investigations in solitary cases].

In the revised Dutch guidelines, faeces testing for Shigella is advised for all household contacts if the index person is less than 6 years old and for persons with symptoms. We argue that in most cases there is no need for faeces testing. Clusters of shigelloses have become rare, and hygienic measures are sufficient to prevent transmission. The statistical significance of shigella transmission in children under 6 years old, on which the revised guideline is based, has no clinical relevance. In fact, the infection rate is only 7% even among the high-risk contacts of the index patients under 6

U.S-acquired human rabies with symptom onset and diagnosis abroad, 2012.

On July 8, 2012, a U.S. resident was admitted to a hospital in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for evaluation of right arm spasticity, anxiety, and malaise. By the next day, the patient had become comatose following a period of agitation. On July 31, he died. Investigators from CDC, state, and local health departments determined that the patient acquired rabies from contact in March with a bat in California. Person-to-person transmission of rabies has been documented in cases of organ and tissue transplantation and is theoretically possible if infectious saliva or tears are introduced into fresh
