[Clinical and pathohistological characteristics of aplastic anemia].

Clinical symptomatology, pathohystiological characteris of bone marrow and the effects of treatment achieved in 21 patients with aplastic anaemia (a.a.) have been presented in this paper. Compared to one of our previous analised serie the number of patients with a.a. of both sexes and age has doubled for the last few years. The ethiogenesis in 14 cases was of unknown origin. In tree cases chloramphenicol was a cause, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria in three other cases and one appeared in pregnancy. Pathohystiology of bone marrow has in 7 cases acellular in 11 hypocellular and in tree par

Low Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) Revealing Hemolytic Anemia in a Growth Hormone-Treated Child: A Case Report.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is widely utilized for monitoring glycemic control in diabetes mellitus. Growth hormone (GH) therapy necessitates reg … ed blood than in fresh blood. Although a definitive diagnosis remained elusive owing to the lack of Coombs testing and genetic analysis, hereditary spherocytosis (HS) was considered the most likely etiology, particularly given the epidemiological prevalence of congenital hemolytic disorders in Japan. Due to unreliable HbA1c values, glycoalbumin was used as an …

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemias: Challenges in Diagnosis and Therapy.

BackgroundAutoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare disease due to increased destruction of erythrocytes by autoantibodies, with or without complement activation.SummaryAIHA is usually classified in warm AIHA (wAIHA) and cold agglutinin disease (CAD), based on isotype and thermal amplitude of the autoantibody. The direct antiglobulin test (DAT) or Coombs test is the cornerstone of AIHA diagnosis, as it is positive with anti-IgG in wAIHA, and with anti-C3d/IgM antisera plus high titer cold agglutinins in CAD. Therapy is quite different, as steroids and rituximab are effective in the former, …

Evaluation of risk factors for the development of bacteremia and complications in patients with brucellosis: Is it possible to predict the clinical course?

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis is often confused with other diseases or accompanies the conditions it imitates. It causes treatment delays, failure, relapse, and complications. This study aimed to investigate bacteremia and complication predictors in Brucellosis patients. Early detection may help reduce relapse rates, length of hospital stay, and surgical intervention rates by providing appropriate treatment. METHODOLOGY: We examined 220 adult patients diagnosed with Brucellosis in our tertiary care hospital in the Black Sea Region between January 01, 2010, and January 01, 2022. Patients with and

[Microspherocytosis. Erythroid profile and its relation with different laboratory tests].

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a congenital and hemolytic anemia characterized by the presence of microspherocytes on the peripheral blood film and negative Coombs test. Although HS is a heterogeneous syndrome in terms of clinical severity, inherents and underlying molecular defects (deficiency of membrane skeleton proteins), typical HS has a dominant inheritance pattern and presents anemia, jaundice and splenomegaly. The purpose of this study was to present our experience and to establish the relationship between hematological and biochemical parameters and osmotic fragility and autohemolys…

Factors associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancies in Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are considered high risk and associated with maternal and obstetric complications. OBJECTIVES: To determine the most important predictors for each of the main adverse pregnancy outcomes in SLE patients. METHODS: Patients with SLE were retrospectively analysed from 1990 to 2020. Maternal and fetal complications in pregnant women with SLE were retrieved. We compared clinical and analytical characteristics of SLE patients with adverse pregnancy outcomes to controls with SLE diagnosis without adverse pregnancy outcomes. Qualitative da

From Hemolysis to Lupus: A Case of Evans Syndrome Revealing Systemic Autoimmunity.

Evans syndrome (ES), the coexistence of autoimmune hemolytic anemia and immune thrombocytopenia, can unmask systemic autoimmune disease. We report a 30-year-old woman who presented with fatigue, jaundice, pallor, and mucocutaneous bleeding. Laboratory evaluation demonstrated severe Coombs-positive hemolytic anemia (hemoglobin 5.8 g/dL, reticulocytosis, high LDH, undetectable haptoglobin) and marked thrombocytopenia, whereas immunologic testing revealed high-titer ANA, anti-dsDNA positivity, and low complement levels; infections, thrombotic microangiopathy, and malignancy were excluded. She was

Systemic lupus erythematosus complicated by noncirrhotic portal hypertension: A case report and review of literature.

A 48 year-old Chinese woman suffering from polyarthritis, irregular fever and trichomadesis was admitted to the hospital. A diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was made based on polyarthritis, pancytopenia, reduced complement 3, multiple positive autoantibodies, a positive Coomb's test and protein in her urine. In addition, splenomegaly was detected during physical examination and confirmed by abdominal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, indicating that the patient had SLE and portal hypertension. Further negative investigations ruled out the possibility of cirrhosis.

Haemoglobinuria And Portal Venous Thrombosis In A Young Male.

Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria is a non-malignant stem cell disorder due to acquired somatic mutations in cell surface anchored proteins CD55 and CD59. Both have a compliment inhibitory role and their deficiency leads to intravascular haemolysis. This paper reports a challenging case of a 25 years old male who presented with generalized weakness, exertional dyspnoea and episodic early morning haematuria. Recently, he started developing progressive abdominal distention and dull generalized abdominal pain. Investigations revealed haemoglobin 3.5 g/dl with 10% reticulocytes, total bilirubin

[Relapse of autoimmune hemolytic anemia in Evans syndrome after thymectomy for pure red cell aplasia].

A 81-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) associated with a thymoma in May 2005. She had previously suffered from Evans syndrome which had been improved by prednisolone in 1999. She underwent a thymectomy, however her anemia subsequently got worse. Reticulocytopenia was noted and a marrow erythroid series was aplastic. Furthermore, both direct and indirect Coombs tests were positive, and the serum haptoglobin level was low. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed as having PRCA complicated with relapsed autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). The…

Elevated autorosette formation by lymphocytes of dogs affectd with cyclic neutropenia (CN).

Cyclic neutropenia (CN) is an inherited disorder characterized by regularly recurring episodes of neutropenia in humans and Gray Collie dogs. Early thymic hypotrophy and lymphoid exhaustion in the CN dogs suggests there may be a lymphoid cell differentiation defect. Later manifestations of CN in dogs include arthritis, anaemia, glomerulone-phritis, and amyloidosis which are often associated with autoimmune diseases. Several Coombs' antiglobulin tests were performed and did not detect autoantibodies, however, peripheral blood lymphocytes from CN dogs formed rosettes with their own erythrocytes

Factors influencing jaundice in immigrant Greek infants.

A study of 887 consecutively born immigrant Greek and 220 Anglo-Saxon Australian infants has shown that serum bilirubin concentrations are influenced by these factors: breast feeding, delivery with forceps, gestation, birthweight, sex of the infant, presence of hypoxia, presence of blood group incompatibility, a positive direct Coombs's test, maternal sepis, and administration to the mother of promethazine hydrochloride, reserpine, chloral hydrate, barbiturates, narcotic agents, diazepam, oxytocin, aspirin, and phenytoin sodium. Apart from the administration of promethazine hydrochloride, rese

Immunopathology of NZB/BL mice. VI. Virus separable from spleen and pathogenic for Swiss mice.

Hemolytic disease characterized by slight anemia, reticulocytosis, hemosiderosis, extramedullary hematopoiesis, and positive indirect antiglobulin (Coombs') tests and renal disease with proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, and glomerular lesions were produced in Swiss mice by neonatal intraperitoneal inoculation of cell-free filtrates prepared from the spleens of old NZB/Bl mice. Lymphoid cell and plasma cell hyperplasia as well as hypergammaglobulinemia occurred in some of these inoculated mice. Type "C" murine oncogenic virus-like particles, indistinguishable from those previously described (1), we
