Signaling by a tyrosine-sulfated peptide balances growth and osmotic stress response in rice.

UNLABELLED: Peptide hormone signaling coordinates plant growth and osmotic stress responses, yet how the transition between these responses is regulated remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the function of the rice PLANT PEPTIDES CONTAINING SULFATED TYROSINE 8 (OsPSY8) peptide in osmotic stress responses. OsPSY8 was predominantly expressed in root tissues under non-stress conditions, with preferential expression in lateral roots where it promoted root growth. Osmotic stress rapidly reduced OsPSY8 expression in roots through the OsWRKY24 transcription factor. Loss-of-function ospsy8

Real time sugarcane stem health detection with YOLOv8 tinier and RepNCSP ELAN.

Sugarcane is the largest cash crop globally in terms of production and serves as a primary source of sugar and biofuel. The buds naturally present on sugarcane stems are used for vegetative propagation, and determining the health of the sugarcane stems is a crucial preliminary step in automated bud extraction pipelines to achieve better seed quality and higher crop yield. However, automated sugarcane stem health detection is not addressed in prior research. Additionally, agricultural automation models must be extremely lightweight and efficient for edge and embedded deployment on resource-cons

Long-Term Fertilisation Regimes, Crop Yield and Rhizosphere Microecology in a Wheat-Soybean Rotation System.

Long-term fertilisation must sustain crop yield and rhizosphere microbial functions in wheat-soybean rotations, but interannual responses remain unclear. We examined 12 treatments in a long-term field experiment established in 1979 and continuing through 2025 in Heilongjiang, China; three within-plot soil composites per treatment represented the 2025 microbiome snapshot. Long-term wheat and soybean grain and straw yield, rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere metagenomes, bacterial diversity, functional gene profiles, taxonomic composition, yield-microbe correlations, and structural equation modellin

Effects of Elevated CO2 on Yield and Nutritional Quality of Kale and Spinach: A Meta-Analysis.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 is known to alter plant physiology, yet its specific effects on nutrient-rich leafy vegetables remain insufficiently quantified. This study aimed to examine how eCO2 influences yield and nutritional quality in kale (Brassica oleracea) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea) through the first meta-analysis focused exclusively on these crops. Following the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence (CEE) guidelines, we systematically reviewed eligible studies and conducted a random-effects meta-analysis to evaluate overall and subgroup responses based on CO2 concentration, crop ty

Role of plant nutritional balance under combined abiotic stress conditions, and stress mitigation strategies.

Climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme temperature events, irregular rainfall patterns and periods of water deficit, which alter soil properties and limit crop performance. These factors often occur simultaneously with other adverse conditions, generating multifactorial stress scenarios that pose a major challenge for agricultural systems. This review examines the reduction and degradation of cropland during the first quarter of the 21st century. Despite this trend, global agricultural productivity has increased in recent decades, largely due to improved knowledge of crop nutrit

Root Rot Disease Biocontrol and Microbiome Community Modulation by Streptomyces Strains in Soybean.

Traditionally, phytopathogenic fungi control strategies rely primarily upon chemical fungicides, but fungicide resistance pathogen strains have appeared in the fields. Therefore, biocontrol approaches highlighted with sustainable agriculture aspects, especially the genus Streptomyces, are known to suppress numerous plant diseases. Streptomyces bacillaris S8 was isolated from turfgrass rhizosphere, and Streptomyces globisporus SP6C4 was obtained from strawberry pollen. Both strains showed excellent antifungal and antibacterial activities and suppressed various plant diseases in vitro. However,

Prospects for Using Phosphate-Solubilizing Microorganisms as Natural Fertilizers in Agriculture.

Phosphates are known to be essential for plant growth and development, with phosphorus compounds being involved in various physiological and biochemical reactions. Phosphates are known as one of the most important factors limiting crop yields. The problem of phosphorus deficiency in the soil has traditionally been solved by applying phosphate fertilizers. However, chemical phosphate fertilizers are considered ineffective compared to the organic fertilizers manure and compost. Therefore, increasing the bioavailability of phosphates for plants is one of the primary goals of sustainable agricultu

Salinity of animal manure and potential risk of secondary soil salinization through successive manure application.

To enhance animal productivity and maximize economic returns, mineral salts are routinely added to animal feed worldwide. Salinity and ionic composition of animal manure from intensive poultry and livestock farms in Guangdong province were investigated. Field experiments were conducted for six successive crops of Brassica Parachinensis to evaluate the possibility of secondary soil salinization by successive application of chicken manure (CM) and pigeon manure (PM) to a garden soil. The concentration of total soluble salts (TSS), which were mainly composed of sulfate and chloride of potassium a

Allelopathy in the natural and agricultural ecosystems and isolation of potent allelochemicals from Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) and Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa).

We have studied on allelopathy of plants and developed methods to identify the effective substances in root exudates, leaf leacheate, and volatile chemicals emitted from plants. We found traditional cover plants that show allelopathic activity are useful for weed control. It could eliminate the use of synthetic chemicals for this purpose. Allelopathy is a natural power of plants to protect themselves by producing natural organic chemicals. Some endemic plants in Asia, already known by farmers in the region, as either cover crops used in intercropping, hedgerow, or agroforestry, were found to p

Role of nanofertilization in plant nutrition under abiotic stress conditions.

Plants require nutrients for growth, which they obtain from the soil via the root system. Fertilizers offer the essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as critical secondary elements) required by plants. Soil productivity falls with each crop until nutrients are provided. A wide range of so-called fertilizer products, such as organic fertilizers, argon mineral fertilizers, and mineral fertilizers, can assist farmers in adjusting fertilization methods based on the environment and agricultural conditions (inhibitors, restricted materials, growth mediums, plant bio-stimu

Agronomic Productivity and Organic Fertilizer Rates on Growth and Yield Performance of Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) in Northwestern Ethiopia.

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) is a popular leafy vegetable in Ethiopia. However, the production and productivity of the crop are often constrained by several factors, such as deprived soil fertility and poor agronomic practices. Thus, a study was conducted in two locations in the East Gojjam zone of northwestern Ethiopia during the 2021/2022 cropping season to evaluate the effect of bud numbers and farmyard manure fertilizer rates on the growth and yield components of cabbage. Three numbers of cabbage buds (1, 2, and 3) and four levels of farmyard manure (0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 tons

Efficacy of a cry1Ab Gene for Control of Maruca vitrata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in Cowpea (Fabales: Fabaceae).

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp.] is an important staple legume in the diet of many households in sub-Saharan Africa. Its production, however, is negatively impacted by many insect pests including bean pod borer, Maruca vitrata F., which can cause 20-80% yield loss. Several genetically engineered cowpea events that contain a cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for resistance against M. vitrata were evaluated in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Ghana (West Africa), where cowpea is commonly grown. As part of the regulatory safety package, these efficacy data were developed and evaluated by

Mycotoxins: occurrence, toxicology, and exposure assessment.

Mycotoxins are abiotic hazards produced by certain fungi that can grow on a variety of crops. Consequently, their prevalence in plant raw materials may be relatively high. The concentration of mycotoxins in finished products is usually lower than in raw materials. In this review, occurrence and toxicology of the main mycotoxins are summarised. Furthermore, methodological approaches for exposure assessment are described. Existing exposure assessments, both through contamination and consumption data and biomarkers of exposure, for the main mycotoxins are also discussed.

Molecular Topology QSAR Strategy for Crop Protection: New Natural Fungicides with Chitin Inhibitory Activity.

Nowadays, crop protection is a major concern and how to proceed is a delicate point of contention. New products must be safe and ecofriendly in accordance with the actual legislation. In this context, we present a quantitative structure-activity relationship strategy based on molecular topology as a tool for generating natural products as potential fungicides following a mechanism of action based on the synthesis of chitin inhibition (chitinase inhibition). Two discriminant equations using statistical linear discriminant analysis were used to identify three potential candidates (1-methylxanthi
