The dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA) provided rapid and accurate detection of human trichinosis. Comparable sensitivity and specificity of the standard ELISA and dot-ELISA were obtained when sera of 18 confirmed cases of trichinosis were screened. Cross-reactivity was assayed with sera from 31 Chinese subjects with other parasitic infections. Only 2 cross-reactions occurred in the dot-ELISA, compared with 7 in the standard ELISA.

The reactions of synthetic polypeptides with their antibodies may be followed by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis, but not by the reverse technique. The reactions were optimal when 18 hours elapsed between the injection of the serum and that of the antigen. Materials which were non-immunogenic as followed by the precipitin test, were shown to be non-immunogenic also by PCA technique. The antisera to various synthetic polypeptide antigens cross-reacted with many chemically related polypeptides. As little as 0.12 μg. of antibody could be detected in 1 ml. of diluted antisera by the PCA technique.

BACKGROUND: Prescribing therapeutic elimination diets in patients with fruit allergy should include recommendations on which other foods of the same family or group may be safely consumed. The first synthesis of enhygrolide A, a scarce γ-alkylidenebutenolide antibiotic of the obligate marine myxobacterium Enhygromyxa salina, was achieved in five steps and 54% overall yield from tetronic acid. Key steps include (i) organocatalytic reductive alkylation, (ii) iron-catalyzed sp2-sp3 cross-coupling, and (iii) vinylogous aldol condensation. Aside from its brevity and reliance on environmentally sustainable processes, the synthesis demonstrates the serviceability of butenolide pivalates in cross-coupling reactions.

UNLABELLED: Furosemide may trigger life-threatening sulfonamide cross-hypersensitivity reactions, posing a dilemma in patients who need diuretic renal scintigraphy.
METHODS: We present our experience using ethacrynic acid as a nonsulfonamide alternative diuretic in 5 patients, with a discussion of the diuretic molecular structure, potential side effects, protocol development, and imaging results.
