[A case of intrasellar arachnoid cyst].

Intrasellar arachnoid cyst is very rare. We report a case of intrasellar arachnoid cyst and review 15 cases which were previously reported. A 58-year-old male was admitted for evaluation of visual disturbance on April 24, 1981. Neurological examination revealed bilateral decreased visual acuity, optic atrophy and bitemporal hemianopsia. X-ray film of the skull showed a balloon-shaped sella turcica with thinning of the cortex of the sella floor. Axial and coronal CT scan showed a cystic lesion with water-density occupying the intrasellar and suprasellar region. After administration of contrast

Single-session alcohol sclerotherapy in benign symptomatic hepatic cysts.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of single-session alcohol sclerotherapy in benign symptomatic liver cysts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten cysts (volume 200-4,800 ml) in 10 patients were treated by percutaneous catheterization and injection of 96% ethanol at a dose of 10% of the cyst volume but never more than 100 ml. The treatment was applied for a maximum of 20 min, after which the alcohol and catheter were removed. RESULTS: A satisfactory reduction in cyst volume was achieved in all patients. In 8 patients there was a re-accumulation of fluid during the first period after therapy, followed by

[Cystic changes of the posterior cranial fossa on the nuclear magnetic resonance tomogram].

MR images were obtained in 15 patients with cystic lesions in the posterior fossa and the results compared with computed tomography (CT). The abnormalities imaged included 5 epidermoids, 3 haemangioblastomas, 4 arachnoid cysts, 1 postoperative cyst, and 4 large cisterns. One advantage of MR is the ability to demonstrate lesions in three planes and without artifacts. Liquor-related intensity measurements of cyst contents provided important information, thereby improving diagnostic specificity and patient management. T2-weighted images were found to be more sensitive in characterising cystic les

Successful management of a large fetal mediastinal teratoma complicated by hydrops fetalis.

This report describes a case of fetal mediastinal teratoma complicated by hydrops fetalis managed successfully by aspiration of the tumor cyst fluid. Fetal mediastinal teratomas are rare tumors that cause hydrops fetalis or fetal demise in the prenatal period and respiratory distress in the neonatal period. The patient presented with a large cystic mass in the thoracic cavity complicated by hydrops fetalis. The hydrops resolved after fetal aspiration of the tumor cyst fluid. The infant was born without respiratory distress, and tumor resection was performed at the age of 30 days. The postopera…

Dentigerous cyst in association with impacted inverted mesiodens: Report of a rare case with a brief review of literature.

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which develops due to fluid accumulation between the reduced enamel epithelium and unerupted tooth crown. The condition is frequently seen with the permanent dentition, usually associated with impacted mandibular third molars and maxillary canines. Rarely, dentigerous cyst occurs in association with a supernumerary tooth. Pain, swelling, and facial asymmetry are occasionally seen; however, they are usually asymptomatic and observed during radiographic examination. Early diagnosis and treatment planning entails thorough history taking, clini

Pericardial cyst in a 2-year-old Maine Coon cat following peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia repair.

A pericardial cyst developed in a 2-year-old male neutered Maine Coon cat following surgery for an incidentally diagnosed congenital peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia. The cyst caused no clinical signs in the cat, although clinical findings included positional right-sided cardiac tamponade and compression of thoracic structures, associated with a cardiac arrhythmia and axis deviation on electrocardiography. Extensive assessment of the cyst included radiography, echocardiography, computed tomography, exploratory thoracotomy, electrocardiography, histopathology and fluid analysis. Surgic

Variant of a lumbar disc cyst in a 13-year-old girl: a case report.

A disc cyst is a rare entity with a clinical presentation that closely mimics an intervertebral disc herniation. Disc cysts are ventrally located, intraspinal, extradural cystic lesions that communicate with the parent intervertebral disc through a ruptured annulus. We present the clinical features, magnetic resonance imaging, intra-operative and histopathological findings of a variant of a lumbar intervertebral disc cyst in a 13-year-old girl who presented with a 6-month history of unilateral radiculopathy following an injury. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large posterocentral, fluid-

[A case report of thoracic duct cyst].

A case of mediastinal thoracic duct is described. A 27-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for abnormal finding of her chest X-ray film, which revealed a mediastinal mass. CT scan, endoscopic ultrasonography, MRI showed that the mass was cystic in the posterior mediastinum. Intra operative ultrasonography demonstrated a thin-walled ovoid cyst containing some high echoic parts inside, which suggested condensed milky fluid. The small pedicle entered the upper pole of cyst was found at surgery and the cyst contained chyle about 300 ml. Histopathological specimen of resected cyst

Micro-fragmented adipose tissue for treatment of knee osteoarthritis with Baker's cyst: a case study.

Adipose-derived therapies have increased in popularity for treatment of painful orthopaedic conditions, such as osteoarthritis. We report the passage of fat into a Baker's cyst after injection of micro-fragmented adipose tissue in a patient with bilateral knee arthritis. Following fat grafting, the patient required drainage of fatty fluid from within the Baker's cyst on multiple occasions. Approximately 3 months postprocedure, she began to notice an improvement in her knee pain with no further recurrence of pain or swelling from her Baker's cyst.

Giant simple renal cyst complicated with hypertension.

Solitary renal cysts are a common and usually asymptomatic occurrence in older patients. They may be associated with hypertension or abdominal disturbances, as they can be responsible for compression of surrounding tissues and distortion of renal vessels. This report presents an interesting case of a hypertensive patient with a solitary renal cyst of a marked size. Owing to the high risk of performing a surgical procedure in such a patient, a distinct therapeutic solution was opted for. Successful management of this case was achieved by a combination of percutaneous fluid aspiration and inject

Dentigerous Cysts of Maxillofacial Region- Clinical, Radiographic and Biochemical Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cyst is the second most common type of odontogenic cysts that encloses the crown of an unerupted tooth by expansion of its follicle due to the collection of cystic fluid. In view of the capability of these lesions attaining a marked size if not diagnosed early and treated properly, the present study was done based on the clinical and radiographic presentation of the dentigerous cyst in addition to the analysis of the cystic contents. OBJECTIVE: The present study reported 14 cases of dentigerous cysts (DC) with their incidence and relative distribution of the maxillofac

Improved detection of intraventricular cysticercal cysts with the use of three-dimensional constructive interference in steady state MR sequences.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Before the advent of MR imaging, intraventricular cysts were difficult to diagnose noninvasively. Among the invasive procedures used were contrast ventriculography and CT ventriculography. MR imaging, with its multiplanar imaging capabilities, excellent depiction of tissue contrast, and versatile parameters, is an important tool in the assessment of intraventricular cystic lesions. We investigated the role of three-dimensional constructive interference in steady state (3D-CISS) MR sequences in the evaluation of intraventricular cysticercal cysts. METHODS: The study gro

Efficiency of ultrasound in the detection of the viability of hydatid cysts in the liver.

The aim of the present study was to establish the relationship between viability of the hydatid cyst and its ultrasonic appearance (Gharbi classification). To evaluate cyst viability, the criteria that were reported by the World Health Organization in 1982 for both the microbiological evaluation of the cystic fluid and the pathological evaluation of the cyst wall were used. In this study, the possibility of being viable was high in Type I cysts; the possibility of being dead was high in Type IV cysts. It is concluded that there is a relationship between ultrasonic appearance and the evolution

Neuroendoscopic Approach to Intracranial Ependymal Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Intraparenchymal cysts without communication to the ventricles or the subarachnoid space are named ependymal or epithelial cysts. The estimated ratio of their incidence compared with arachnoid cysts is 1:10. Neurologic deficit can occur when the cyst exerts mass effect on its surroundings. We evaluated the success rate of endoscopic fenestration of intracranial ependymal cysts. METHODS: Our prospectively maintained endoscopy database was screened for all cases of ependymal cysts. The charts were retrospectively reviewed for symptoms, surgery, postoperative course, and complication

Ovulation of ovarian implants in unilaterally ovariectomized rats.

Subcutaneous autografts of ovarian tissue were made in unilaterally ovariectomized adult rats and were examined by light microscopy at various times after implantation. The implants were surrounded by a dense connective tissue capsule. They were well vascularized and contained follicles in varying stages of development as well as in different stages of atresia. Oocytes and fresh corpora lutea indicated that grafts ovulated in the presence of the in situ ovary but that the number of ovulations and their frequency were reduced when compared to normal ovaries or ovaries grafted in bilaterally cas

[Matured mediastinal teratoma with a giant cyst resembling pleural effusion on X-ray films].

A 23-year-old man complaining of right-sided chest pain was admitted to our hospital for further examination of an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray films. Initially, we suspected the abnormal shadow was that of a pleural effusion in the right thorax. Computed tomographic scans disclosed a tumor in the anterior mediastinum, adjacent to the abnormal shadow. After closer examination, particularly by fluoroscopy on catheterization, we recognized that the abnormal shadow was a giant cyst, and that it connected with a solid mass. There were no abnormal laboratory data on admission. An examination of f
