Prevalence and risk factors associated with dehydration of patients with dysphagia in eastern China: A cross-sectional study.

AIMS: Dehydration is one of the common complications of dysphagia and poses significant risks including hospitalization and mortality, but the relationship between dysphagia and dehydration has received little attention. This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for dehydration of patients with dysphagia in eastern China, and to provide reference for early identification and prevention of dehydration. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was conducted. Three hundred and thirty-seven (n = 337) patients with dysphagia participated in the study between August and Dec…

Optimization of a Solvent Exchange Method Enabling the Use of Dehydrated Cellulose Nanofibers as the Thickener in Lubricating Oleogels.

A method that enabled the formulation of lubricating oleogels using dried cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as an eco-friendly thickener in castor oil was studied. In their dehydrated state, strong hydrogen bonding between nanofibers and high hydrophilicity are the main obstacles to their dispersion in oil. Hence, clusters of dried CNFs had to be previously detached by their dispersion in water. The resulting hydrogels were then subjected to methanol washes to displace the water from the nanofibers. After centrifugation, the methanol-wetted precipitate was readily dispersed in castor oil, forming an

Dissecting the Roles of Cuticular Wax in Plant Resistance to Shoot Dehydration and Low-Temperature Stress in Arabidopsis.

Cuticular waxes are a mixture of hydrophobic very-long-chain fatty acids and their derivatives accumulated in the plant cuticle. Most studies define the role of cuticular wax largely based on reducing nonstomatal water loss. The present study investigated the role of cuticular wax in reducing both low-temperature and dehydration stress in plants using Arabidopsis thaliana mutants and transgenic genotypes altered in the formation of cuticular wax. cer3-6, a known Arabidopsis wax-deficient mutant (with distinct reduction in aldehydes, n-alkanes, secondary n-alcohols, and ketones compared to wild…

Acid-base disturbances in dehydrated patients with cystic fibrosis : four case reports with review of literature.

Most episodes of vomiting, reduced intake and diarrhoea in children can be evaluated and treated without additional tests. However, when the degree of clinical dehydration is not in line with the patient's medical history, other diagnoses should be suspected. In the presence of a hyponatraemic hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis, cystic fibrosis (CF) should be included in the differential diagnosis, especially if there is failure to thrive even in the absence of respiratory symptoms. Furthermore, young patients diagnosed with CF have a higher risk for an acute electrolyte decompensation caused …

The Use of Dehydrated Human Amniotic/Chorionic Membrane Skin Substitute in the Treatment of Pediatric Facial Burn.

BACKGROUND: Facial burns have lasting physical and psychological effects on pediatric patients. Proper management to minimize morbidities challenges reconstructive surgeons. New technologies allowed the development of skin substitutes such as amniotic and chorionic membranes, yet the use of these skin dressings and their impact on burn outcomes have not been sufficiently studied to guide practices. The objective of this study is to report on the outcomes of dehydrated amniotic membrane as a biologic skin dressing in pediatric facial burn injury compared to cadaveric allografts. METHODS: Retro

Efficacy of Dehydrated Human Amniotic Membrane Allograft for the Treatment of Severe Extravasation Injuries in Preterm Neonates.

INTRODUCTION: A peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheter is placed in 60% to 70% of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) infants. Extravasation injuries occur in 18% to 33%, with 70% in neonates < 27 weeks of gestational age. Despite such frequent use of PIV therapy, evidence on best practice, injury prevention, management, and treatment of extravasations is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This case series of 4 neonatal patients describes the experience and efficacy of using a dehydrated human amniotic membrane allograft (dHAMA) in the treatment of severe extravasation injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 4

Mucosal surface area and fermentation activity in the hind gut of hydrated and chronically dehydrated working donkeys.

The effects of mild chronic dehydration on fermentation rate and mucosal surface area in the cecum, dorsa and ventral colon, and descending colon of the hindgut were investigated in South African donkeys (n = 11) in agricultural work. Dehydration representing a 6% drop in BW (n = 6) was associated with increased fermentation activity in the cecum (252 +/- 22.9 vs. 161 +/- 13.5 micromol/g of DM.h(-1), P < 0.01) and enhanced fluid retention in the ventral colon (0.81 +/- 0.026 vs. 0.73 +/- 0.034 mL/g gut, P < 0.05). Fermentation activity in the next segment of the hindgut, the ventral colon, of …

Use of isopropyl alcohol in histological assays: dehydration of tissue, enbessing into paraffin, and processing of paraffin sections.

Isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) can be used as a substitute for ethyl alcohol in tissue dehydration during embedding into paraffin and dehydration of stained sections. The use of isopropyl alcohol during paraffinization allows us to exclude treatment with intermediate solvents of paraffin (chloroform, xylene, and benzene), which reduces the degree of tissue compaction and simplifies and accelerates histological assay.

Comparison of 7.5% NaCl/6% dextran-70 resuscitation of hemorrhage between euhydrated and dehydrated sheep.

7.5% NaCl/6% dextran-70 (HSD) has been shown to be an effective, small volume resuscitation fluid following hemorrhage (HEM) in euhydrated (E) sheep. However, there is controversy whether hypertonic solutions would be effective in dehydrated (D) animals. Therefore, we used two groups (E and 4 days D) of chronically instrumented ewes to evaluate the responses to HSD following HEM. All sheep were bled and maintained at 50 mmHg mean arterial pressure (MAP) for 2 h, then resuscitated with a 4 mL/kg bolus of HSD. Dehydration did not affect baseline MAP, heart rate (HR), or total peripheral resistan…
