Two decades of occupational (meth)acrylate patch test results and focus on isobornyl acrylate.

BACKGROUND: Acrylates constitute an important cause of occupational contact dermatitis. Isobornyl acrylate sensitization has been reported in only 2 cases. We encountered an industrial process operator with occupational contact dermatitis caused by isobornyl acrylate. OBJECTIVES: (i) To investigate whether it is relevant to add isobornyl acrylate to the (meth)acrylate test series. (ii) To report patients with (meth)acrylate contact allergy at an occupational dermatology clinic. PATIENTS/MATERIALS/METHODS: Our patch test database was screened for positive reactions to (meth)acrylates between

Contact dermatitis caused by pesticides among banana plantation workers in Panama.

To characterize dermatitis related to pesticide exposures among banana plantation workers in Panama, the authors studied 281 workers seen at The Occupational Health Department of the Social Security Hospital of Changuinola and Puerto Armuelles between 1988-1992 and in 1993. Exposure data were collected through a standardized occupational health history. Physical examination, a standard patch test, and a pesticide patch test (PPT) were carried out. Of the 244 men (86.8%) and 37 women (13.2%), 17 and 37, respectively, were packing station workers. The other 227 men were field workers, exposed to

Contact allergy and hand eczema in Swedish dentists.

Hand eczema and contact allergy in Swedish dentists were studied in a multidisciplinary project. The aims of the study were to establish diagnoses, to investigate the occurrence of contact allergy, in particular to (meth)acrylates, and to evaluate certain consequences of hand eczema. A postal questionnaire on skin symptoms, atopy and occupational experience was mailed to 3,500 dentists aged <65 years, and licensed 1965-1995. The response rate was 88%. Among dentists living in 3 major cities, 14.9% (n= 191) reported hand eczema during the previous year. They were invited to a clinical examinati

[Epidemiology of contact dermatitis: prevalence of sensitization to different allergens and associated factors].

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, contact dermatitis is a relatively common skin complaint, whose prevalence has increased in recent years. Study by patch testing is essential for diagnosis of contact sensitization. OBJECTIVES: To study the prevalence of sensitization to different allergens in a standard battery and observe the influence of different epidemiological and clinical variables on contact sensitization. A large number of allergens were included in our battery in order to detect new sensitizations whose prevalence might justify further study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retros

Analysis of Prevalence and Risk Factors of Contact Sensitization with respect to the Occupational Profiles in a Greek Patient Cohort: A Retrospective Analysis of a Greek Referral Centre and Future Perspectives.

Contact dermatitis is a frequent skin disorder related to environmental and occupational etiological factors, which could potentially affect all age groups, as well as both genders. The current study is aimed at exploring the patterns of contact sensitization with respect to the population's occupational patterns in Greece. A retrospective analysis was performed in a cohort of 1978 patients from 2014 to 2016. Patients were divided into two categories; blue collars (BlC) and white collars (WhC), as well as detailed occupation was considered. Separation was performed on the basis of their profes

UK trends of allergic occupational skin disease attributed to fragrances 1996-2015.

BACKGROUND: Fragrances are well known to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Occupationally related cases occur, with certain groups being at higher risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of occupationally related cases of cutaneous fragrance allergy and to evaluate trends. METHOD: Data on incident cases of occupational ACD caused by fragrances between 1996 and 2015 (inclusive) reported to the EPIDERM surveillance scheme were analysed. RESULTS: Of the cases reported to EPIDERM during the study period, 5.2% had ACD attributed to fragrances. The highest annual incidence rates were

Differences between the sexes with regard to work-related skin disease.

Work-related skin disease is common and usually presents as hand eczema. From the Occupational Injury Information System in Sweden, as well as from registers of industrial injuries in other countries, it is evident that females report skin disease more often than males. Epidemiological studies of hand eczema also show that women are more often affected than men, in particular young women. The most common type of hand eczema is irritant contact dermatitis, which is often caused by wet work. Many female-dominated occupations involve extensive wet work, e.g., hairdressing, catering, cleaning and

Occupation-related allergies in dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Allergies to natural rubber latex (NRL) were unknown in dentistry until 1987. That changed with the publication of a report documenting NRL-based anaphylaxis in a dental worker. This case and others prompted regulatory and manufacturing changes in rubber products and increased awareness throughout the profession. However, other common dental chemicals cause allergic reactions and irritation and often are handled with insufficient precautions. Although recognition of NRL allergy has improved, awareness of other potential allergens and irritants in dentistry still is limited. OVERVI

[Cutaneous allergy in construction workers].

Nine hundred building trade workers and 4372 office workers (from a database of 16267 patients) with suspected allergic dermatitis, underwent patch tests. The associations between patch test results and occupations were assessed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. As expected, building trade work was significantly associated with chromium sensitization (OR 1.55; 95% IC 1.22-1.97), a well known occupational hapten in this occupational group. An increased risk for epoxy resin sensitization (OR 3.80; 95% IC 2.11-6.86) and thiuram mix sensitization (OR 1.69; 95% IC 1.07-2.65) was also fo

[The allergic skin].

The main cutaneous manifestation of allergy is eczema. In atopic dermatitis, the epidermal Langerhans cells express receptors for IgE and the eczematous lesions may be associated with other atopic disorders such as asthma or pollinosis. In contact dermatitis, the epidermal Langerhans' cells play the role of antigen-presenting cells; the antigens eliciting the eczematous lesions may be of occupational, vestimentary, cosmetical, therapeutical or other environmental origin. Epicutaneous test procedures enable their identification. Paraptic eczema is a concept including all the cutaneous and syste

The less common occupational dermatoses.

Contact dermatitis and nonmelanoma skin cancer are the most common occupational skin disorders in North America, but there are many other occupational dermatoses that illustrate the wide range of pathological and adaptive responses of the skin to workplace exposure. Discussed are acne, chemically induced leukoderma, nail diseases, contact-related burns, high-pressure injection injuries, contact urticaria, heat reactions and photosensitivity, and infections.

[Symptoms of diabetic gastroenteropathy in patients with diabetes].

Occupational hand eczema (HE) has continuously been the most frequently recognised occupational disease, comprising > 95% of all recognised occupational skin diseases. Irritant contact dermatitis constitutes > 70%, where wet work is the main eliciting factor. Knowledge on the dose-response relationship between wet work and HE is pivotal concerning preventive interventions, job counselling and medico-legal regulations, which is summarised in this review. New findings indicate a significant risk of having HE at an exposure level of no more than 30 minutes of wet work per day.

Clinical and Epidemiological Features of Paederus Dermatitis Among Nut Farm Workers in Turkey.

Paederus dermatitis is an acute irritant dermatitis resulting from contact with the hemolymph of Paederus beetles. This dermatitis mimics other infectious skin disorders, often resulting in diagnostic dilemmas. This study of 46 patients was conducted to increase awareness about Paederus dermatitis. Possible causes of a number of cases of Paederus dermatitis in Giresun, Turkey, were investigated using climate data and telephone interviews with the patients about risk factors. Insects caught by patients were identified at the species level. All patients were hazelnut farm workers and admitted to

Hand dermatitis/eczema: current management strategy.

Ever since its inception a couple of centuries ago, hand dermatitis/eczema has been in the reckoning. Idiosyncrasies continued to loom large thereafter, till it acquired its appropriate position. Dermatitis/eczema are synonymous, often used to indicate a polymorphic pattern of the inflammation of the skin, characterized by pruritus, erythema and vesiculation. A spectrum delineated into acute sub-acute and chronic dermatitis of the hands. Pompholyx, recurrent focal palmer peeling, ring, wear and tear and fingertip eczema, apron, discoid eczema, chronic acral dermatitis, gut and patchy papulosqu

Lesional skin vascular endothelial growth factor levels correlate with clinical severity in patients with cement allergic contact dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis to cement is a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction in which cytokines interferon-gamma (IEN-y) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) may be involved in persisting erythema and oedema. VEGF and IFN-gamma levels in serum and skin lesions were measured in 32 Egyptian building workers with chronic allergic contact dermatitis due to occupational exposure to cement and 20 healthy controls. Dermatitis patients had significantly higher levels of serum and lesional skin VEGF and IFN-gamma than controls. A significant positive correlation was found between tissue VE

Occupational contact allergy in bricklayers, tile setters etc. - Current spectrum of sensitization and recent time trends.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure of bricklayers, construction workers, tile setters etc. has changed during the last years. For some years now, all manually handled cement in the European Union and in Switzerland is chromate-reduced. Epoxy resin systems are being used in more and more fields of application. Improved worker's protection, especially wearing protective gloves, is promoted. These changes influence the spectrum of occupational contact sensitization. Carbon fiber-laminated epoxy resin causing chronic occupational dermatosis: presentation with erythroderma and dyschromia-a case report.

Epoxy resins are a common cause of occupational allergic contact dermatitis. Carbon fiber-laminated epoxy resin (CFLER) is a newer material with enhanced mechanical properties, but its health effects remain underreported. A 46-year-old male worker developed erythroderma involving >90% of his body surface and dyschromia after chronic exposure to CFLER in a confined workspace. Skin biopsy demonstrated features of chronic dermatitis, and immunohistochemistry revealed uneven melanocyte distribution. Laboratory studies showed elevated immunoglobulin E levels without internal organ dysfunction. Ches

Update on medical and surgical gloves.

Occupational dermatitis to personal protective equipment (PPE), particularly to gloves, mainly occurs in healthcare workers. They are all irritant and/or allergic contact dermatitis (eczema and contact urticaria). Prolonged glove wearing by healthcare workers favours skin irritation of the hands and wrists. It is very important to consider characteristics and materials of gloves used in the medical field. Rubber additives are the main allergens in gloves. Latex or natural rubber remains by far the most frequent cause for occupational contact urticaria from gloves. The problem of prevention of
