Primary care practitioners in the pediatric setting treat children for numerous skin complaints. The most frequently seen dermatologic conditions are those that are persistent and cause children discomfort, such as atopic, contact seborrheic dermatitis and tinea infections. Familiarity with the presentation, pathophysiology, and treatment of these common skin conditions enables the practitioner to successfully manage these rashes.

Histiocytosis X is a disorder of histiocytes of the Langerhans' cell lineage. As the initial feature is often cutaneous, recognition of these skin changes is important. Several cutaneous manifestations have been described, most commonly, seborrheic dermatitis with a hemorrhagic component. We saw two patients with histiocytosis X with cutaneous manifestations resembling cherry angiomas.

Scaly scalp is a common problem in the pediatric and adolescent population. The possible causes range from the commonly seen tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis to rare systemic diseases such as dermatomyositis and Letterer-Siwe disease. In all cases a thorough history and physical examination are important first steps to successful diagnosis and treatment.

Ketoconazole (KCZ) is an imidazole anti-fungal agent that is also effective in topical applications for treating seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. Recently, topical use of 2% KCZ shampoo has been reported to have had a clinically therapeutic effect on androgenetic alopecia. The present study was conducted with the purpose of quantitatively examining the stimulatory effect of KCZ on hair growth in a mouse model. Coat hairs on the dorsal skin of seven week-old male C3H/HeN mice were gently clipped, and either 2% KCZ solution in 95% ethanol or a vehicle solution was topically applied once daily

BACKGROUND: Some dermatologic disorders are known to be much more common in patients of color, but the leading dermatologic disorders in patients of color have not yet been described on the basis of nationally representative data.
PURPOSE: To determine the leading dermatologic disorders for each major racial and ethnic group in the United States.
METHODS: We queried the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) for the leading diagnoses in patient visits to U.S. dermatologists from 1993 to 2009. The leading diagnoses were tabulated for each racial and ethnic group, and the top conditio

Keratosis lichenoides chronica also known as Nekam's disease is a rare mucocutaneous disorder, characterized clinically by asymptomatic violaceous keratotic papules arranged in linear, reticular, or plaque form usually on the trunk and extremities and histologically by interface dermatitis. The disease is considered rare with only 128 cases being reported in the literature till date and very few from India. We report a case of a 40-year-old man who presented with constellation of features of lichen planus, seborrheic dermatitis, and apthous ulcers, which upon workup was found to be Nekam's dis

After more than a decade of use, topical minoxidil solution has proven to be a safe and effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia. However, some patients present with complaints of pruritus and scaling of the scalp. The most common causes of these symptoms include irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, or an exacerbation of seborrheic dermatitis. Patients suffering from allergic contact dermatitis may benefit from patch testing to determine the causative allergen. Among the patients we patch tested, propylene glycol was found to be the contactant in a majority of cases,

BACKGROUND: Nerve growth factor (NGF), a neurotrophin that plays a critical role in developmental neurobiology, is released by proliferating keratinocytes and induces proliferation.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of tyrosine kinase receptor A (TrkA), a high-affinity receptor of NGF, in human keratinocytes.
METHODS: Expression of TrkA and NGF in skin diseases was investigated by immunohistochemistry. Expression of TrkA in cells was examined by Western blotting and RT-PCR. Cell proliferation was assessed by BrdU assay.
RESULTS: We first determined the expression

Malar rash and photosensitivity are common findings in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, a number of inflammatory, dermatologic, infectious or drug-induced conditions may mimic cutaneous findings of SLE. These typically include seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, rosacea, polymorphous light eruption, syphilis and dermatomyositis sine myositis. Herein we describe a patient with fever, malar rash, alopecia, photosensitivity, arthralgias and lymphadenopathy who was subsequently diagnosed with secondary syphilis. In this case report we review clinical and histopathological findin

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily characterized by motor symptoms, but non-motor symptoms, including skin manifestations, are increasingly recognized. These remain underexplored despite their potential impact on quality of life.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical features of skin findings in PD patients, with a focus on identifying potential pathogenetic links between dermatological conditions and PD.
METHODS: A total of 215 PD patients were included. Comprehensive dermatological examinations were performed, and demographic and clinical data

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic and recurrent superficial dermatitis in which Malassezia species play an important role. There are different Malassezia species, which have been recently reported to be resistant to common antifungals. Natural sources can be useful alternatives to reduce the emergence of this resistance. Kombucha tea is believed to have potential antimicrobial properties. Regarding this, the present study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity of Kombucha tea ethyl acetate fraction (KEAF) against Malassezia species obtained from the patients with

BACKGROUND: Both the skin and the neurologic system are derived from the ectoderm during embryogenesis, and thus patients with neurologic disorders may have accompanying dermatologic diseases. For example, seborrheic dermatitis is more frequently observed in patients with Parkinsonism and other neurologic disorders. To date, however, there has been limited review on dermatologic diseases in neurosurgical in-patients.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize dermatological problems encountered in a neurosurgery unit and to compare these data to previous reports of in-patient de

A study was done to determine the frequency of common dermatoses seen in private dermatology practices composed of predominantly black patients. This was then compared to similar previous studies. New trends in common dermatoses in private black patients were found. The most common dermatosis noted was acne vulgaris, followed by eczema, pigmentary disorders, seborrheic dermatitis, and alopecias.

A simple, rapid and highly sensitive LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the determination of ketoconazole in human plasma. Sample preparation was accomplished through a single step liquid-liquid extraction by ethyl acetate. The chromatography separation was carried out on a Hedera CN (150mm×2.1mm, 5μm) column with isocratic elution using acetonitrile and 10mM ammonium acetate containing 0.1% formic acid (45:55, v/v) as the mobile phase. The flow rate was 0.5mL/min. Detection was performed in the positive ion electrospray ionization mode using multiple reaction monitoring of the tr

Twelve patients receiving therapy with an azole agent (ketoconazole, itraconazole, and/or fluconazole) for systemic mycoses experienced drug interactions with rifampin, phenytoin, and/or carbamazepine resulting in substantial decreases in azole concentrations in serum. All four patients receiving azoles and concurrent phenytoin and/or carbamazepine failed to respond to treatment or suffered a relapse of their fungal infection. Four of five patients with cryptococcosis who received itraconazole and rifampin responded despite decreases in their serum itraconazole concentrations; synergy between

Darier's disease is a rare disorder of keratinization of the epidermis, nails, and mucous membranes. Patients usually present with pruritus and pain along with multiple small, red-brown papules on the seborrheic areas. Other cutaneous signs include punctate keratotic pits of the palms and soles and dystrophy of the nails. Darier's disease is the result of a mutation in the ATP2A2 gene. A case which was difficult to diagnose because its presentation resembled more commonly seen skin conditions is reported. The patient was misdiagnosed with acne, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis, and was treate
