Comparison of Metabolic and Hormonal Profiles between Low-Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) and Standard AGEs-Containing Weight-Loss Diets in Overweight Phenotype-A PCOS Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

This study aims to investigate the effects of a low-advanced glycation end products(AGEs) diet versus a standard AGE-containing weight-loss diet on metabolic and hormonal profiles of overweight phenotype-A polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) patients.A randomized controlled interventional study.A total of 44 Rotterdam phenotype-A PCOS patients aged 19-35 were enrolled between January 2022 and May 2023. They were randomly assigned to 12-weeks of an energy-restricted Standard-AGEs diet(S-AGEs) or an energy-restricted Low-AGEs diet(L-AGEs). At baseline and after 12-weeks of intervention, weight loss,

Adipose Tissue Biology and Effect of Weight Loss in Women With Lipedema.

UNLABELLED: Lipedema is a lipodystrophic disease that is typically characterized by a marked increase in lower-body subcutaneous adipose tissue that is purported to have increased inflammation and fibrosis, have impaired microvascular/lymphatic circulation, and be resistant to reduction by weight loss therapy. However, these outcomes have not been adequately studied. We evaluated body composition, insulin sensitivity, metabolic health, and adipose tissue biology in women with obesity and lipedema (Obese-LIP) before and after moderate (∼9%) diet-induced weight loss. At baseline, people with Obe

Latent Trajectories of Change in Dietary Restriction During Treatment in Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Outcomes for low-weight restrictive eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, restricting type (AN-R) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), are sub-optimal. Reducing dietary restriction is a key treatment target. Understanding heterogeneity in patterns of change in dietary restriction may aid in improving outcomes. We examined latent trajectories of change in dietary restriction during treatment and follow-up in AN-R and ARFID. METHODS: Adolescents and adults with R-EDs (N = 276, 18% ARFID, 90% female, M age = 18) receiving intensive ED treatment completed asse

Sustainable dietary weight loss intervention and its effects on cardiometabolic parameters and greenhouse gas emissions: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial with overweight and obese adults in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

INTRODUCTION: The global obesity epidemic and its adverse health effects have reached sub-Saharan Africa. In some urban settings, like Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou, up to 43% of the adult population are overweight or obese. At the same time, modernised food systems are responsible for 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions, 50% of land use and 70% of freshwater use. International guidelines on the treatment of overweight and obesity recommend dietary intervention programmes that promote reduced calorie intake and increased physical activity. So far, weight loss interventions rarely consi

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation associated with hypocaloric diet on glucose homeostasis in obesity.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test the effects of repetitive active transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) associated with a hypocaloric diet on glucose homeostasis in people with excessive weight. METHODS: Adults with overweight or obesity were selected in a randomized, double-blind pilot study to complete 4 weeks (20 sessions) of fixed-dose tDCS (2 mA, 20 minutes) delivered over the rDLPFC and associated with a standard hypocaloric diet. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) and stratified by sex to the active tDCS

Implementing the international evidence-based guideline of assessment and management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): how to achieve weight loss in overweight and obese women with PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women. Many of these women are overweight or obese. A minor weight loss of 5%-10% can significantly reduce reproductive, metabolic and psychological symptoms of PCOS and is recommended as a first step in the treatment of overweight or obese women with PCOS. Many weight loss programs have been proposed, but optimal methods on how to achieve the recommend weight loss are lacking. The aim of this systematic review was to generate practical tools for health professionals to guide women with PCOS towards a sustainable healthi

Hemodynamic Effects of Weight Loss in Obesity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed to explore whether weight loss may improve central hemodynamics in obesity. BACKGROUND: Hemodynamic abnormalities in obese heart failure with preserved ejection fraction patients are correlated with the amount of excess body mass, suggesting a possible causal relationship. METHODS: Relevant databases were systematically searched from inception to May 2018, without language restriction. Studies reporting invasive hemodynamic measures before and following therapeutic weight loss interventions in patients with obesity but no clinically overt heart failure were extr

Management of Obesity.

This review examines weight loss and accompanying improvements in obesity-related comorbidities produced by intensive lifestyle intervention, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery. Obese individuals lose approximately 6 to 8 kg (approximately 6% to 8% of initial weight) with 6 months of participation in a high-intensity lifestyle intervention (≥ 14 treatment visits) consisting of diet, physical activity, and behavior therapy. Such losses reduce progression to type 2 diabetes in at-risk people and decrease blood pressure and triglyceride levels. All diets, regardless of macronutrient compositi

Nutritional and psychological considerations after bariatric surgery.

The anatomic and physiological changes resulting from bariatric surgery can affect both nutrition and psychological attitudes. Modifications of the gastrointestinal tract lead to a diminished ability to absorb nutrients, electrolytes, and bile salts, as well as deficiencies in iron, calcium, and other vitamins and minerals. Dehydration, lactose intolerance, and protein calorie malnutrition are other common sequelae. Alterations in bone metabolism increase long-term risk for osteopenia and osteoporosis. Noncompliance with postsurgical nutritional regimens has been estimated to occur in from one

Eating disorder behaviors are increasing: findings from two sequential community surveys in South Australia.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for an increase in the prevalence of eating disorders is inconsistent. Our aim was to determine change in the population point prevalence of eating disorder behaviors over a 10-year period. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Eating disorder behaviors were assessed in consecutive general population surveys of men and women conducted in 1995 (n = 3001, 72% respondents) and 2005 (n = 3047, 63.1% respondents). Participants were randomly sampled from households in rural and metropolitan South Australia. There was a significant (all p<0.01) and over two-fold increase in the preval

Respiratory failure due to morbid obesity in a patient with Prader-Willi syndrome: an experience of long-term mechanical ventilation.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is characterized by obesity, mild mental retardation or learning disability, and behavior problems, especially in association with food and eating. A 19 year-old man, 150 cm, 140 kg (body mass index [BMI], 62.2 kg.m(-2)), whose condition had been diagnosed as PWS, received 41-day mechanical ventilation because of respiratory failure, chiefly due to morbid obesity. Because the patient frequently developed bronchoconstriction, metered-dose inhalers of a corticosteroid (beclomethasone dipropionate) and a beta2 agonist (salbutamol) were needed. To achieve adequate sedat

[The influence of body mass reduction on metabolic disorders and complications in patient with morbid obesity. Three years observation].

We describe a case of 40-year-old male with giant obesity, with signs of metabolic syndrome, treated with low-calorie diet (700 kcal in 1-st year of treatment, 1200 kcal in 2-nd and 3-rd year of treatment), and supplementary pharmacotherapy with sibutramine. Patient initial weight was 170,9 kg, height 189 cm, BMI = 47,8 kg/m2. In summary weight loss in this patient was 52,9 kg, this is 30,9% of initial value. This case report shows that giant obesity with accompanying metabolic disorders and complications can be treated with combination of diet, physical activity and pharmacotherapy. The key f
