Longitudinal follow-up by MR angiography reveals progressive dilatation of the distal aorta after aortic root replacement in Marfan syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To define and compare growth rates of the distal aorta in Marfan patients with and without aortic root replacement using serial MR angiography (MRA). METHODS: We retrospectively included 136 Marfan patients with a total of 645 MRAs who underwent a median of five MRAs (range: 2-13) at 1.5 T and 3 T in annual intervals. Of these, 41 patients (34.8 ± 12 years) had undergone aortic root replacement. The remaining 95 patients (29.0 ± 17 years) still had a native aorta and served as the control group. Thoracic aortic diameters were independently measured at eleven predefined levels. Est

[Dilatation of the left atrium as one of the indicators of worse prognosis in patients treated with intermittent hemodialysis].

UNLABELLED: Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent cause of death in patients undergoing treatment with hemodialysis (HD). Echocardiography is the established method in diagnosis and searching for HD patients with an increased risk of death from cardiovascular events. The aim of the study was to show parameters, obtained also in the echocardiographic examination, which are helpful to distinguish persons with the worse prognosis among the group of HD patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observation was done in 56 patients. Echocardiographic examination was performed at baseline before and af

Recto-sacral index for diagnosis of rectal dilatation in male intermediate/high-type anorectal malformations: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Rectal dilatation is common in anorectal malformations (ARMs), predisposing patients to postoperative defecation dysfunction. However, studies of diagnostic criteria and risk factors are lacking. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 100 male patients with intermediate/high-type ARMs who underwent high-pressure distal colostogram (HPC) prior to anoplasty. The recto-sacral index (RSI), defined as the maximum diameter of the rectal pouch divided by the height of the second sacral vertebra, was developed and measured. Patients were categorized based on intraoperative and pathologic

A comparative study between two ultrasound classifications for postnatal urinary tract dilatation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The objective was to test whether the Society for Foetal Urology (SFU) and urinary tract dilatation (UTD) ultrasound classifications for postnatal urinary tract dilatation were able to predict the need for surgical treatment or spontaneous resolution of dilatation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective observational study, involving cases whose first ultrasound scans for congenital hydronephrosis were performed between 2008 and 2011. Clinical variables were recorded and each case was classified according to the SFU and UTD classifications. Univariate analysis and bin

Presence and significance of telocytes in cholelithiasis and biliary dilatation in benign biliary disorders.

Telocytes are closely associated with the regulation of tissue smooth muscle dynamics in digestive system disorders. They are widely distributed in the biliary system and exert their influence on biliary motility through mechanisms such as the regulation of CCK and their electrophysiological effects on smooth muscle cells. To investigate the relationship between telocytes and benign biliary diseases, such as gallbladder stone disease and biliary dilation syndrome, we conducted histopathological analysis on tissues affected by these conditions. Additionally, we performed immunohistochemistry and

One-step solution for angioplasty, low-profile stent delivery, and intrastent dilation using a dual-lumen angioplasty balloon microcatheter: technical advances, limitations, outcomes, and literature review.

Dual-lumen angioplasty balloon microcatheters make it possible to perform percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), low-profile stent delivery, and intrastent dilation without the microcatheter exchange technique. This technique has shown many advantages in recent years. We reviewed the techniques and applications in different intracranial vascular diseases and summarized the outcomes and indications. Gateway dual-lumen angioplasty balloon was used for PTA and kept in situ. Stent was delivered and deployed via Gateway microcatheter. Intrastent balloon dilation was performed after stent depl

Predictors of multiple dilations and functional outcomes after total laryngectomy and laryngopharyngectomy.

BACKGROUND: Following total laryngectomy (TL) or laryngopharyngectomy (TLP), patients may develop strictures that require multiple dilations to treat. However, the risk factors associated with dysphagia refractory to a single dilation are unknown. METHODS: Single-institution retrospective review of patients who underwent at least one stricture dilation after TL/TLP between March 2013 and March 2022. RESULTS: A total of 49 patients underwent stricture dilation after TL/TLP. Thirty-five (71%) underwent multiple dilations. Pharyngocutaneous fistula, primary chemoradiation therapy, and a shorter

Balloon dilatation versus CO2 laser surgery in subglottic stenosis, a retrospective analysis of therapeutic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a narrowing of the airway just below the vocal folds. The cause of SGS and the optimal care for these patients, have remained elusive. Endoscopic surgery of SGS using either balloon or CO2 laser is associated with recurrence. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Our aim is to compare surgery free intervals (SFI) between these two methods applied in two different timeframes. The knowledge gained from this project can support decision-making regarding surgical method choice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Participants were retrospectively identified using medical records betwee

Dolichoectasia: a brain arterial disease with an elusive treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Dolichoectasia is a form of brain large artery disease associated with a high risk of mortality and morbidity. Progressive enlargement of arterial size is a predictor of mortality, but there are no specific treatments for arresting or slowing down dilatation. Additionally, dilated brain arteries can cause flow stagnation, which can trigger thrombosis and cause stroke. Pathology and genetic studies indicate a possible role for increased matrix metalloproteinase activation in arterial dilatation and thus in the pathophysiology of dolichoectasia. Therefore, therapeutic interventions

Diagnostic imaging for absent pulmonary valve syndrome: an update with an emphasis on cardiothoracic computed tomography.

Absent pulmonary valve syndrome is a rare congenital heart disease characterized by partial or complete absence of pulmonary valve cusps which commonly presents with respiratory difficulty during infancy. Because central airway compression by dilated central pulmonary arteries is a key pathology of this syndrome responsible for clinical presentation, severity, and outcome, cardiothoracic computed tomography (CT) is currently regarded as the imaging modality of choice before and after treatment. In addition, tracheobronchomalacia frequently responsible for persistent respiratory problems can be

Congenital segmental dilatation of the jejunum in an African child: a case report.

Congenital segmental dilatation of the intestine is a rare disease. It is rarely located in the jejunum and its etiology is still unknown despite many theories suggesting its mechanism. We report a case of a 17 months girl who experienced nonspecific symptoms (abdominal pain, constipation and loss of appetite) since early her infancy. She had no growth retardation and had moderate abdominal distension on physical examination. Investigations undertaken could not increase suspicion of congenital segmental dilatation of the intestine (CSDI). The diagnosis was made peroperatively and a resection w
