1. Some effects of removing increasing proportions of the left caecum on the remaining caecal tissue and on the right caecum were studied in young chicks during a period of 35 d. The chicks were 22 d old when the operations were carried out. 2. No differences were detected between the gains in weight of the control and experimental groups of birds. 3. A marked negative linear relationship was observed between the dry weight of the amount of caecal tissue removed when the birds were 22 d old and weight of the left caecum at the end of the experiment. 4. The average growth rate of the left caecu

From a natural infected chicken (Gallus gallus var. domesticus) in the Ivory Coast trypanosomes were isolated using Mastomys natalensis as recipient animal. Trypanosomes were diagnosed as belonging to the subgenus Trypanozoon from its morphology and its infectivity for rodents. The stabilated stock was able to infect a laboratory chicken. The stock proved to be human plasma subresistant and showed electrophoretic patterns of three enzymes (ALAT III, ME I, PEP III) so far only seen in pig and dog originated Trypanozoon stocks from the same region surveyed. The discovery for the first time of ch

Weaned piglets, aged between six and eight weeks, underwent one single experimental infection, using few imaginal stages as well as second and third larval stages of Haematopinus suis. Louse populations of various densities developed on animals of the same litter under the same keeping and feeding conditions. No unambiguous reduction in body weight increase was observed throughout the two months of the experiment. Even pigs with 2,107 or 2,135 adult lice and their larval stages were not affected. Some of the pigs developed allergic dermal inflammations in the course of pediculosis and suffered

A zero passage arctic mosquito isolate of California encephalitis (CE) virus (showshoe hare subtype) was transmitted by wild-caught Aedes communis mosquitoes after 13 days incubation at 13 degrees and 23 degrees C, AFTER 20 days incubation at 13 degrees C, when mosquitoes imbibed 1 mouse LD50 in a blood meal. Transmission occurred after 20 days incubation at 13 degrees and 23 degrees C when mosquitoes were injected intrathoracially with 1 or 0.1 mouse LD50. Virus was also transmitted by A. aegypti 13 days after infection with 100 mouse LD50 by feeding or intrathoracic injection, and incubation

This report describes a fracture-dislocation of the shoulder joint due to electric shock. This is the first case reported in an English language journal of fracture due to shock from the domestic electricity supply. Other cases have been reported but not caused by such a low voltage current.

Metrifonate, an organophosphorus compound, caused a decline in the number of microfilariae in domestic cats experimentally infected with Brugia pahangi. It was found that the drug was active against both microfilariae and macrofilariae, but probably its greatest effect was on the macrofilarial stages. It is suggested that the drug should be used in filarial infections of man on a trial basis.
