Mammalian twisted gastrulation is essential for skeleto-lymphogenesis.

Dorsoventral patterning depends on the local concentrations of the morphogens. Twisted gastrulation (TSG) regulates the extracellular availability of a mesoderm inducer, bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP-4). However, TSG function in vivo is still unclear. We isolated a TSG cDNA as a secreted molecule from the mouse aorta-gonad-mesonephros region. Here we show that TSG-deficient mice were born healthy, but more than half of the neonatal pups showed severe growth retardation shortly after birth and displayed dwarfism with delayed endochondral ossification and lymphopenia, followed by death withi…

Kleeblattschadel anomaly. In utero sonographic appearance.

Four cases of Kleeblattschadel demonstrated on prenatal ultrasound examinations are reported. Five additional cases from the literature are reviewed. Sonographic features include enlarged trilobed skull, hydrocephalus, polyhydramnios, and frequent association with thanatophoric dwarfism. The most common error in diagnosis was misinterpretation of this skull anomaly as encephalocele.

Case report: hypomagnesaemia in a patient with acromesomelic dysplasia.

Hypomagnesaemia and acromesomelic dwarfism are both rare inherited disorders. We report the first case of both these conditions occurring in the same patient. Our child and his family pedigree are further evidence that both these diseases are inherited as autosomal recessive conditions. There is no known association between these two diseases.

[Genetically-determined familial recurrent thanatophoric dysplasia].

Thanatophoric dysplasia was first described in 1967 by Maroteaux. It is one of the most common lethal neonatal dwarfisms. Estimated incidence of thanatophoric dysplasia is 0.2-0.5 per 10,000 births. In the following report we have described a prenatally diagnosed case of recurrent thanatophoric dysplasia in the same patient.

Small scattered fragments do not a dwarf make: biological and archaeological data indicate that prehistoric inhabitants of Palau were normal sized.

UNLABELLED: Current archaeological evidence from Palau in western Micronesia indicates that the archipelago was settled around 3000-3300 BP by normal sized populations; contrary to recent claims, they did not succumb to insular dwarfism. BACKGROUND: Previous and ongoing archaeological research of both human burial and occupation sites throughout the Palauan archipelago during the last 50 years has produced a robust data set to test hypotheses regarding initial colonization and subsequent adaptations over the past three millennia. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Close examination of human burials at the …

Single Shot Spinal Anaesthesia for Caesarean Delivery of Two Achondroplasic Parturients.

Because of structural defects in achondroplasia, as one of the dwarfism types, the choice of an anaesthetic technique and management for caesarean delivery presents a challenge. We aimed to discuss our successful single-shot spinal anaesthesia approach for caesarean section for one urgent and one elective achondroplasic parturient based on the literature.

Pericentrin: critical for spindle orientation.

Mutations in the pericentrin (PCNT) gene cause Majewski osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPDII). Recent work reveals that a discrete set of centrosome proteins require PCNT for their robust localization to mitotic spindle poles. Critically, this complex is crucial for mitotic spindle orientation and involved in the pathogenesis of MOPDII.

Holoprosencephaly-polydactyly ('pseudotrisomy 13') syndrome: a syndrome with features of hydrolethalus and Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndromes. A collaborative multicentre study.

A syndrome of holoprosencephaly and postaxial polydactyly, associated with hydrocephalus, heart defect, adrenal hypoplasia, and other visceral malformations, has been observed in five unrelated children with normal chromosomes. Clinical overlap with lethal acrodysgenital dwarfism (Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome type II) and hydrolethalus syndrome is discussed. Recessive inheritance seems likely.

Skeletal disorders associated with fibroblast growth factor receptor mutations.

Mutations in three fibroblast growth factor receptor loci underlie several autosomal dominant skeletal disorders; these include dwarfism and various craniosynostosis syndromes affecting limb and craniofacial bone patterning. A functional analysis of several of these mutations has demonstrated that a constitutive activation of the receptor kinase is a common theme.

[Cloverleaf syndrome. Presentation of four cases (author's transl)].

Four cases of cloverleaf syndrome are presented. Authors agree with recent opinions that this alteration is a significant indication that may be presented by diseases which develop craniosynostosis very early (acrocephalosyndactyly, thanatophoric, dwarfism, Crouzon's disease, etc.). Etiopathogenic considerations are made about morphology and prognosis in this disease of unknown etiology.

Jujube Witches' Broom Phytoplasma Effector Zaofeng3, a Homologous Effector of SAP54, Induces Abnormal Floral Organ Development and Shoot Proliferation.

Plant-pathogenic phytoplasmas secrete specific virulence proteins into a host plant to modulate plant function for their own benefit. Identification of phytoplasmal effectors is a key step toward clarifying the pathogenic mechanisms of phytoplasma. In this study, Zaofeng3, also known as secreted jujube witches' broom phytoplasma protein 3 (SJP3), was a homologous effector of SAP54 and induced a variety of abnormal phenotypes, such as phyllody, malformed floral organs, witches' broom, and dwarfism in Arabidopsis thaliana. Zaofeng3 can also induce small leaves, dwarfism, and witches' broom in Zi…

Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia--report of two families.

Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a relatively uncommon inherited disorder of epiphyseal maturation. Affected individuals may have a degree of short-limbed dwarfism, short stubby digits, and stiff or painful joints. We report two families of MED and emphasize the variations of joint involvement. Ten out of 34 members in family A and 13 out of 39 members in family B were suspected of having MED by questionnaire. Radiological examination was done for 3 out of the 10 members in family A and 6 out of the 13 members in family B. In both families, the epiphyseal disturbances in the skeleton wer…

MdCo31 interacts with an RNA polymerase II transcription subunit 32 to regulate dwarf growth with short internodes in columnar apple.

The dominant Co locus controls the columnar growth phenotype of apple (Malus × domestica) trees. Candidate gene MdCo31, encoding 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase, causes dwarf growth with short internodes in transgenic plants by reducing the abundance of biologically active gibberellin. However, the pathway regulating MdCo31 in the dwarfism of apple trees remains unclear. In this study, expression of MdCo31 was proved to be negatively correlated with internode length in F1 populations created by crossing columnar parents, and with dwarfism in transgenic apple plantlets. Yeast (Saccharomyce…
