OBJECTIVE: Intracordal injection for vocal fold augmentation is easy and simple and does not require a cervical skin incision. We reported previously on the 1-year results of injected autologous auricular cartilage for volumetric augmentation in paralyzed canine vocal cord. This study evaluates the long-term histomorphologic results of injected autologous auricular cartilage for the augmentation of the paralyzed canine vocal fold at 2 and 3 years.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A prospective trial of autologous cartilage augmentation of vocal cord in animal model. Five dogs were operated on. A pie

Although animal bites account for a fair number of emergency department visits, donkey bites account for a very limited proportion. A 12-year-old boy presented to our department with a severe donkey bite involving his face. The injury included his left cheek with a laceration of the left ear cartilage. The examination revealed no serious morbidity (no vascular or nerve involvement). The patient received prophylactic antibiotics and anti-rabies/anti-tetanus vaccination. The wound was cleaned thoroughly with copious irrigation. Afterward, the patient underwent surgery to correct the defect in th…

BACKGROUND: The most common means of ear reconstruction include a cutaneous flap (CF) or a fascial flap with skin graft (FSG). Each approach has advantages and disadvantages; however, sensory outcomes have yet to be compared. This study aimed to compare sensory outcomes between these 2 ear reconstruction approaches.
METHODS: Pediatric and adult patients with microtia or who underwent ear reconstruction were included. Sensory recovery was assessed using a 5-filament Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test sensory score before reconstruction, when available, and after single- or 2-stage reconstructi

The campomelic syndrome is characterized by dwarfism, craniofacial anomalies, bowing of the tibiae and femora, cutaneous dimpling overlying the tibial bend, respiratory distress, and early death. Otolaryngologic manifestations include flat facies with a broad nasal bridge, low-set ears, cleft palate, mandibular hypoplasia, and tracheobronchial malacia. The underlying pathologic feature appears to be disturbance in cartilage growth involving the affected bones and the respiratory tract cartilage. The cause is unknown. We report clinical and histopathologic features in two cases of this syndrome

Several benign and malignant tumors can be observed on the skin of the external ear at various ages, and some are specifically located in this area. Large lesions can be disfiguring and impair hearing by obstructing the external auditory canal. They can also cause chronic ulcerations and, in some cases, secondary destruction of underlying cartilage. The management of some external ear tumors requires a multidisciplinary approach. Being aware of the rich clinical spectrum of auricular tumors enables early diagnosis, preventing the need for more aggressive surgery with accompanying undesirable c

Composite cartilage grafts were excised from New Zealand rabbit ears. Flat composite grafts (of cartilage and overlying skin graft on both surfaces) were obtained from each ear and cut into a rectangle measuring 50 mm by 25 mm (x by y) with an average thickness of approximately 1.3 mm (z), skin included. Specimens were manually deformed with a jig and maintained in this new position during laser illumination. The composite cartilage grafts were illuminated on the concave surface with an Nd:YAG laser (1,064 nm, 3 mm spot) at 10 W, 20 W, 30 W, 40 W, 50 W. Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) was applied

The use of porous polyethylene in reconstructive surgery of the auricle is becoming increasingly accepted. This is a single-stage procedure providing pleasing cosmetic rehabilitation. Further advantages are the possibility of early implantation and the lack of complications caused by harvesting costal cartilage. Additional hearing restoration using middle ear implants allows functional rehabilitation at an early stage.

OBJECTIVE: For microtia patients with excessively insufficient postauricular skin, it is difficult to obtain a satisfied outcome with existing strategies. In this study, we developed a modified tissue expander method for auricular reconstruction.
METHODS: The modified tissue expander method divided into 4 stages. In the first stage, a 30 ml or 50 ml kidney-shaped tissue expander was implanted in the mastoid region. A short time expansion (average 33.5 days) was conducted subsequently. In the second stage, the expander was removed and a modified cartilage framework without tragus was inserted

Models and previously reported data are used to describe two hypothetical bone-conduction (BC) induced ear-canal sound-pressure (PEC) sources in chinchillas. Sound-pressure measurements and a middle-ear model are combined with new micro-computed tomography ear-canal measurements. The ear-canal models contain one ideal volume-velocity source in the cartilaginous canal walls and a second in the bony walls. Analyses suggest the following: (i) Vibrations of both the cartilaginous and bony walls contribute to BC-induced PEC. (ii) With an open ear canal, the BC-induced PEC is dominated by cartilagin

Chondrodermatitisnodularishelicis is characterized by a sore nodule of the helix or antihelix of the ear. Pressure plays an important role in the pathogenesis of the benign inflammatory condition. Pressure relieving is a rational first-line treatment modality and could be applied in combination with or followed by intralesional steroid injections. If the condition remains, a surgical procedure is warranted. Cartilage removal without skin excision is the procedure of choice. Particular attention should be paid to the complete removal of all defective cartilage. This procedure is elegant and sim

We report a technique of auricular replantation used in a case of traumatic amputation. The principal difficulties encountered in this type of replantation are mentioned, and ways of avoiding them are suggested. All the skin of the ear was removed except for that of the anterior surface of the conch. At this site, the cartilage received small, multiple perforations to allow for nutrition of the corresponding skin. The remainder of the auricular cartilage was covered by a skin flap undermined from the mastoid region. Three months later, the retro-auricular region was freed and covered with a to
