CONTROL OF SCHISTOSOMIASIS IN THE GEZIRA IRRIGATION SCHEME, SUDAN.

This paper analyses the changing patterns of infection with Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium in the Gezira Irrigation Scheme, Sudan. Taking a historical perspective, it shows the way in which factors such as ecology, biology, social and economic variables and politics have shaped patterns of infection, and how different kinds of strategies have been developed to control schistosomal infection over time. Wider political and economic issues at both national and international levels have shaped these strategies, influencing the prevalence and intensity of schistosomal infection at a local l

Rates of breastfeeding and exposure to socio-economic adversity amongst children with intellectual disability.

Children with intellectual disability are at increased risk of experiencing poor health relative to their typically developing peers. Previous research indicates that exposure to socio-economic disadvantage contributes towards this disparity but that additional factors (including parenting practices) may be involved in mediating/moderating pathways. This study examined duration of breastfeeding amongst children with and without intellectual disability by a secondary analysis of data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study. Children with intellectual disability were significantly less likely to hav

The impact of ageing, socio-economic differences and the evolution of morbidity on future health expenditure - a dynamic microsimulation.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing is associated with rising healthcare expenditure. To inform policy and adapt health systems accordingly, a detailed quantitative analysis of the different components of ageing and other factors that influence cost dynamics is needed. METHODS: We use dynamic microsimulation to project healthcare expenditure in Austria and disentangle the effects of changes in longevity, population age-structure, healthy life years and socio-economic health disparities. By combining price weights for healthcare services with information on healthcare consumption from the Austrian H

The impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions on the socio-economic and demographic determinants of COVID-19 incidence: A spatial analysis of the pandemic in Toronto, Canada.

Socio-economic and demographic variables have been identified as determinants of transmission of, and susceptibility to, COVID-19. In this study, we analyse the heterogeneous impacts of non-pharmaceutical interventions on the socio-economic and demographic (SED) variables driving COVID-19 incidence in Toronto during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th waves of the pandemic. Spatial autoregressive models were used to explore associations between COVID-19 incidence and SED variables at neighborhood scale, accounting for vaccination levels. This approach helps clarify how SED factors and vaccine coverage drive

Association of Low-Birth Weight with Malnutrition in Children under Five Years in Bangladesh: Do Mother's Education, Socio-Economic Status, and Birth Interval Matter?

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in children under five years remains a significant problem in Bangladesh, despite substantial socio-economic progress and a decade of interventions aimed at improving it. Socio-Economic Disparities in Access to Diagnostic Neuroimaging Services in the United Kingdom: A Systematic Review.

UNLABELLED: Socio-economic factors affecting health care can lead to delays in diagnosis of neurological conditions, consequentially affecting treatment and morbidity rates. This inequality in health care can leave patients from lower socio-economic backgrounds more vulnerable to a poorer quality of care from health care providers in the United Kingdom (U.K.). AIMS: In this systematic review, we assess the impact of socio-economic status on the use of diagnostic neuroimaging in the U.K., measured by the timeliness, accessibility and appropriate use of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resona…

Due to the huge interests involved, however, other factors, both social and political should also be taken into consideration. Economic evaluation has been seen as a promising foundation
