When one-size-doesn't-fit-all: The emerging role of customized 3D stents.

Non-malignant airway stenoses remain major challenges in interventional pulmonology, particularly when long-term stenting is required. Although conventional silicone airway stents effectively restore patency, their standardized geometry often fails to accommodate patient-specific airway anatomy, leading to migration, granulation tissue formation, mucus plugging, and repeated bronchoscopic interventions that limit long-term tolerance and efficacy. Advances in high-resolution imaging and modeling, and additive manufacturing have enabled the emergence of patient-specific, 3D-engineered silicone a

Recovery of bioactive compounds from citrus by-products: advances in conventional and innovative extraction approaches, bioavailability, and applications.

Citrus processing generates large amounts of by-products-mainly peels, pomace, and seeds-that are abundant in valuable bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, essential oils, pectin, and vitamin C. Efficient recovery of these compounds not only supports the production of functional ingredients but also aligns with circular economy and zero-waste objectives. Traditional extraction methods, including maceration, Soxhlet extraction, hydrodistillation, and solvent extraction, remain widely used but often require long processing times, consume significant energy and solvents, and can

Glyco-Cloaking Unlocks Cationic Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens for Myogenesis Support and On-Demand Photodynamic Antibacterial Action.

Antimicrobial resistance threatens both human health and economic stability, urgently demanding antibiotic-free infection strategies. This global crisis brings to the fore a central challenge in antimicrobial material design lying in reconciling potency with biocompatibility, a dilemma acutely epitomized by cationic amphiphilic materials, despite their longstanding therapeutic significance. To address this, we present a glyco-cloaked charge-masking strategy that converts an intrinsically toxic cationic scaffold into a biocompatible and multifunctional platform. By employing a deep-red aggregat…

Magnetic-Field-Enabled Ultrafast Quench Synthesis of Single-Atom Catalysts for Efficient Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) play a critical role in diverse catalytic applications, but their efficient synthesis remains a significant challenge. Herein, we develop an ultrafast magnetic-field-enabled quench (MFEQ) strategy to synthesize a series of M1/G-FeOx (M═Ni, Fe, Co, Ir, Ru, and Pt) SACs within a few seconds. Using Ni1/G-FeOx as a proof of concept, this method leverages the rapid quenching of thermally incandescent Fe foam into an Ni-containing ethanol solution, triggering simultaneous graphene formation and Ni anchoring. The Ni1/G-FeOx catalyst shows exceptional alkaline oxygen evolu

Biodiesel Production From Low-Grade Fats Using Sulfonated Hydrochar Catalysts.

A more sustainable route to biodiesel involves converting free fatty acid (FFA)-rich feedstocks through Fischer esterification using acid catalysts. Replacing traditional homogeneous catalysts, typically strong inorganic acids like H2SO4, with heterogeneous acid catalysts enhances both environmental and economic sustainability by enabling catalyst reuse, reducing corrosion, and minimizing wastewater generation. In this study, the methanolysis of oleic acid, used to model low-value fat, was catalyzed by hydrochar-based heterogeneous acid catalysts derived from banana peels, orange peels, and su

Can we Predict the Outcomes of Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This manuscript comprehensively reviews the most recent studies on preoperative and intraoperative factors that positively or negatively influence the clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM). RECENT FINDINGS: Initial research focused on baseline demographic (e.g., age, sex, BMI) and meniscal tear characteristics to predict short- and medium-term outcomes. Recent investigations, however, have broadened this scope to include previously overlooked ancillary elements, such as socio-economic and psychological factors. Furthermore, non-menisca

Social determinants of health and objective rest-activity rhythms and sleep health in U.S. Adults: Depression and overactive bladder as potential explanatory factors.

This cross-sectional study examined whether cumulative adverse social determinants of health (SDOH) were associated with accelerometer-derived rest-activity rhythms and multidimensional sleep metrics, and whether depression and overactive bladder statistically accounted for part of the SDOH-relative amplitude association in exploratory pathway analyses. We analyzed 6,130 U.S. adults aged 20-80 y (mean age 49.5 y; 51.7% female) from NHANES 2011-2014. From wrist-worn 7-d accelerometer recordings, nonparametric rest-activity indices (interdaily stability, intradaily variability, and relative ampl

Tick-borne diseases in subtropical dairy farming: The role of calf rearing strategies in antibody and antigen prevalence.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs), such as anaplasmosis and babesiosis, pose significant challenges to dairy farming in subtropical regions, where balancing tick control with immune development is essential to maintaining herd health. This study evaluated the immune responses of calves raised under confined and traditional systems in Ecuador. Serum samples from 124 cows and their calves were analysed using ELISA assays to detect Anaplasma marginale antibodies and Babesia bovis antigens. The results showed a significantly higher seroprevalence of A. marginale antibodies in calves reared under traditio

Network pharmacology-based identification and validation of novel vaccine candidates against brucellosis.

Brucellosis remains one of the most prevalent zoonotic diseases worldwide, causing substantial economic losses and significant human morbidity. Despite decades of research, no licensed human vaccine against Brucella infection exists, and current veterinary vaccines exhibit considerable safety limitations including residual virulence, pregnancy complications, and diagnostic interference. Here we report the development of a multi-epitope messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine candidate targeting Brucella melitensis, the most pathogenic species responsible for human brucellosis. Using an integrated immunoi

Stable In Vitro Cultivation of the Myxozoan Enteromyxum leei for over 12 Months: Integration of a Physical Aggregation Technique for Long-Term Antiparasitic Interventions.

Emaciation disease, primarily caused by the myxosporean parasite Enteromyxum leei, poses a significant economic threat to the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) aquaculture industry. Research on E. leei has been severely restricted by its status as an unculturable obligate parasite and its extreme sensitivity to cryopreservation. In this study, we developed a standardized in vitro culture system that achieved stable maintenance of E. leei for over 12 months for the first time. To overcome the challenges of primary isolation, a physical aggregation technique was implemented, which effectiv

Nanotechnology-driven strategies for tilapia vaccines: Comparative evaluation of nanoemulsions and silica nanoparticles against Streptococcus agalactiae.

Streptococcosis, caused by Streptococcus agalactiae, is a significant disease in tilapia farming that results in substantial economic losses. While vaccination is the most effective method for prevention, current vaccines face challenges when administered orally or through immersion, primarily due to poor absorption and degradation in the fish's digestive system. Nanotechnology offers new ways to improve vaccine delivery and effectiveness. This review compares two nanoparticle (NPs)-based systems - nanoemulsions and silica NPs (SiNP) - for delivering vaccines to tilapia. Nanoemulsions are smal
