Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Disordered Eating in US Youth: The PLATE Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between individual adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) in US youth. In addition, to test mediation and moderation by psychosocial and contextual factors. METHOD: The study was based on a cross-sectional analysis of 47,617 children 10 to 17 years of age from the 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health. Survey-weighted logistic regression estimated ACE-DEB links adjusted for demographics; mediation was assessed with structural equation modeling and moderation with interaction terms. RESULTS: Overall, DEBs were re

Dilemmas of early dementia screening among community-dwelling older adults: a qualitative study from the perspective of social determinants of health.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is one of the most urgent public health challenges globally. Early screening is indispensable for timely identification and intervention. However, early dementia screening among community-dwelling older adults remains low, and the mechanisms underlying screening barriers remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: A qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews was conducted with 23 older adults who were purposively recruited from three communities in Wuhan, China. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis that combined deductive co

How education gets under the skin: Pathways linking educational advantage to slower biological aging.

Educational attainment strongly predicts inequalities in accelerated biological aging. These differences are likely due to social and material benefits of education levels, but studies have yet to systematically evaluate how multiple overlapping pathways simultaneously are associated with differences in accelerated biological aging in later life. Using nationally representative data from the 2016 Venous Blood Study from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 9025; mean age = 70) in the United States and structural equation modeling, we investigate multiple adult life pathways between educational

[Quantifying the Carbon Reduction Difference Based on Households' Willingness to Transform Their Lifestyles from the Micro Perspective].

Cities are gathering places for residents, industries, and energy consumption, and the carbon emissions generated by urban residents' consumption are becoming increasingly prominent. Under the "dual carbon" goal, how to effectively guide the transformation of urban households' lifestyles and achieve consumption side carbon reduction has become an important issue. Based on questionnaire surveys and face-to-face interviews in the main districts of Hangzhou, the total amount and component of household consumption carbon reduction potential in Hangzhou were calculated by adopting a carbon emission

Problem gambling severity in a nationally representative sample of the Israeli population: the moderating role of ethnonational affiliation.

INTRODUCTION: Gambling is a public health concern. Problem gambling is related to a range of psycho-social risk factors including ethnonational affiliation. Israel is an insightful case to probe problem gambling, given the socio-economic marginalization of Israeli Arabs, the continued exposure of Israelis to stress and the conservative Israeli gambling market. This study aimed to estimate problem gambling severity in Israeli society, characterize the sociodemographic, environmental, mental health, and gambling-related risk factors associated with problem gambling severity, and examine the role

Mood disorders in children following neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Few studies on the consequences following newborn hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (NHIE) assess the risk of mood disorders (MD), although these are prevalent after ischemic brain injury in adults. OBJECTIVE: To study the presence of MD in children survivors of NHIE. METHODS: 14 children survivors of NHIE treated with hypothermia and without cerebral palsy and 15 healthy children without perinatal complications were studied aged three to six years for developmental status (Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3 [ASQ-3]) and for socio-emotional status (Preschool Symptom Self-Report [PRESS

Association of the Military Transition to an All-Volunteer Force and Subsequent Zero-Tolerance Drug Policy with Characteristics of Male Veterans in the Vietnam, Post-Vietnam and Subsequent Post-Post Vietnam Cohorts.

In the 1970s, following the Vietnam Conflict, the U.S. military transitioned to an All-Volunteer Force (AVF). In the 1980's military benefits increased and a zero-tolerance policy for illicit drugs was instituted. Changes in characteristics of veterans deserve study. National survey data from 2012 to 2013 compare vetderan-non-veteran differences in three age cohorts: the Vietnam cohort; the AVF (Post-Vietnam) cohort; and volunteers under the no tolerance policy (Post-Post-Vietnam). Comparisons addressed socio-demographic, behavioral, and substance use and psychiatric diagnoses. Multivariate in

Early Physical Abuse and Adult Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Because most physical abuse goes unreported and researchers largely rely on retrospective reports of childhood abuse or prospective samples with substantiated maltreatment, long-term outcomes of physical abuse in US community samples are unknown. We hypothesized that early childhood physical abuse would prospectively predict adult outcomes in education and economic stability, physical health, mental health, substance use, and criminal behavior. METHODS: Researchers in two multisite studies recruited children at kindergarten entry and followed them into adulthood. Parents completed

Identifying Essential Components of School-Linked Mental Health Services for Refugee and Immigrant Children: A Comparative Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Foreign-born children rarely use traditional school mental health services. Comprehensive programs that combine mental health services with academic, economic, and socioemotional supports reach more foreign-born children and improve wellbeing. However, little practical guidance exists regarding how to best combine these diverse services. METHODS: To identify essential service components and their organization, we interviewed 92 parents, school staff, mental health providers, and community agency staff from 5 school-linked mental health programs designed specifically to serve immig

Substance Use and HIV Among Female Sex Workers and Female Prisoners: Risk Environments and Implications for Prevention, Treatment, and Policies.

Female sex workers (FSWs) and female prisoners experience elevated HIV prevalence relative to the general population because of unprotected sex and unsafe drug use practices, but the antecedents of these behaviors are often structural in nature. We review the literature on HIV risk environments for FSWs and female prisoners, highlighting similarities and differences in the physical, social, economic, and policy/legal environments that need to be understood to optimize HIV prevention, treatment, and policy responses. Sex work venues, mobility, gender norms, stigma, debt, and the laws and polici

Family history of problem drinking is associated with less sensitivity of alcohol demand to a next-day responsibility.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral economic demand curves measure alcohol consumption as a function of price and may capture clinically relevant individual differences in alcohol-reinforcing efficacy. This study used a novel, behavioral-economic, hypothetical demand-curve paradigm to examine the association between family history of alcohol misuse and individual differences in both alcohol demand and the relative sensitivity of alcohol demand to next-day responsibilities. METHOD: Participants were 207 college students (47% male, 68.5% White, 27.4% African American, Mage = 19.5 years) who reported at least

Erectile dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Male sexual health has taken on increased importance as the United States population ages, develops coexisting medical conditions and undergoes interventions that can affect sexual function. We characterized the burden and severity of disease, treatment patterns and economic consequences of erectile dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analytical methods used to generate these results were described previously. RESULTS: Erectile dysfunction was self-reported by almost 1 of 5 men and it increased with age. Erectile dysfunction may have been more commonly reported in Hispanic men a

Pathways From Poverty to Child Mental Health in Burkina Faso: Longitudinal Mediation Analyses in a Cluster-Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: The study applies the Family Stress Model to examine the impact of an integrated intervention on the mental health of children facing chronic adversity in Burkina Faso. Its primary goal is to enhance understanding of individual and relational factors at the family level as mediators and specific mechanisms through which poverty reduction can impact child well-being. METHODS: Cross-lagged autoregressive longitudinal mediation analyses tested the intervention effect on child mental health, examining maternal depression, maternal anxiety, harsh parenting, and child exposure to abuse as

Lived experiences of disabled individuals living in Bahir Dar City, North West Ethiopia, a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: When an individual's activities and performances in a normal environment are limited in nature, function, or quality, that person is considered to have a disability. Although many studies on disabled people's lived experiences have been conducted around the world, there is still a significant gap between nations in multiple cases such as culture, economic status, and the recommendation of a previous study in Ethiopia, which is one reason for conducting this research. OBJECTIVES: To explore the lived experiences of disabled individuals living in Bahir Dar City. METHODS: A descript

Downward economic mobility and preterm birth: an exploratory study of Chicago-born upper class White mothers.

A paucity of published data exists on the factors underlying the relatively poor birth outcome of non-Hispanic White women in the United States. To determine whether downward economic mobility is a risk factor for preterm birth (<37 weeks, PTB) among upper class-born White women. Stratified and multilevel logistic regression analyses were performed on an Illinois transgenerational dataset of non-Hispanic White infants (1989-1991) and their women (1956-1976) with appended US census income information. The study sample was restricted to singleton births of Chicago-born upper-class (defined by ea

Cost-effectiveness of a music therapy intervention for people living with dementia: a model for a UK-based economic evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is widely used in UK dementia care to support cognitive and social functioning. Music therapy (MT) also shows cognitive benefits for people living with dementia (PLwD) but is not routinely available through the NHS due to limited cost-effectiveness evidence. This study evaluated the combined use of CST and MT compared to CST alone, providing a realistic assessment of the added value of MT within standard care. METHOD: A decision analytic model was constructed using a cost utility framework with a healthcare perspective, over a three-month time h

Cash transfers and HIV/HSV-2 prevalence: A replication of a cluster randomized trial in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: In this paper we perform a replication analysis of "Effect of a cash transfer programme for schooling on prevalence of HIV and herpes simplex type 2 in Malawi: a cluster randomised trial" by Sarah Baird and others published in "The Lancet" in 2012. The original study was a two-year cluster randomized intervention trial of never married girls aged 13-22 in Malawi. Enumeration areas were randomized to either an intervention involving cash transfer (conditional or unconditional of school enrollment) or control. The study included 1708 Malawian girls, who were enrolled at baseline an

Enhancing El-Shohada distribution network: techno-economic optimization of PV and EV infrastructure using growth optimization algorithm.

This paper presents a comprehensive techno-economic framework for the optimal integration of distributed energy resources (DERs)-specifically Photovoltaic (PV) solar generation-and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) into modern electrical distribution grids. The methodology is applied to a realistic 25-bus, 11 kV radial distribution network modeled after the El-Shohada district in Menofia Governorate, Egypt. To balance inherently conflicting technical and financial objectives, a multi-objective penalty function is formulated. It simultaneously minimizes active power losses, mitigates vo
