The psychology of cryptocurrency trading: Risk and protective factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Crypto-currency trading is a rapidly growing form of behaviour characterised by investing in highly volatile digital assets based largely on blockchain technology. In this paper, we review the particular structural characteristics of this activity and its potential to give rise to excessive or harmful behaviour including over-spending and compulsive checking. We note that there are some similarities between online sports betting and day trading, but also several important differences. These include the continuous 24-hour availability of trading, the global nature of the ma

Experiencing virtual patients in clinical learning: a phenomenological study.

Computerised virtual patients (VPs) are increasingly being used in medical education. With more use of this technology, there is a need to increase the knowledge of students' experiences with VPs. The aim of the study was to elicit the nature of virtual patients in a clinical setting, taking the students' experience as a point of departure. Thirty-one students used VPs as a mandatory part of an early clinical rotation in rheumatology. Using the qualitative approach of phenomenology, we interviewed these students and then analysed data regarding their experiences of VPs as a learning activity.

RiverBot: Reimagining AI, Technology, and Leadership via Indigenous Co-Leadership and Relational AI.

Contemporary chatbot development is often led by teams with highly specialized technical training, leaving little space for imaginative and community-centered approaches to technology. This can limit the ability of AI systems to reflect community priorities, place-based knowledge, and diverse ways of knowing. Using RiverBot as a case study, we examine how Indigenous scholars, students, and community partners co-led the development of Relational AI by carrying Indigenous epistemologies into chatbot design, evaluation, and implementation. We argue that Indigenous leadership fundamentally transfo

The Midwife's Bag: Tracing the Objects of Professional Identity in Post-Unification Italy.

As an immediate target of post-Unification legislation, Italian midwives were subject to national efforts to standardize educational and professional practices. As a material emblem of these initiatives, the midwife's bag signified both a recognizable marker of midwives' new professional status and a mechanism for the increased surveillance directed toward them. Drawing on the material feminism of scholars like Donna Haraway and Karen Barad, the author considers three objects contained within the midwife's bag-syringes, stethoscopes, and birth registers-and the associated technologies of aseps

Engineering the next generation of clinical deep brain stimulation technology.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has evolved into a powerful clinical therapy for a range of neurological disorders, but even with impressive clinical growth, DBS technology has been relatively stagnant over its history. However, enhanced collaborations between neural engineers, neuroscientists, physicists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons are beginning to address some of the limitations of current DBS technology. These interactions have helped to develop novel ideas for the next generation of clinical DBS systems. This review attempts collate some of that progress with two goals in mind. First, pr

Interprofessional Collaboration Between Mental Health Counselors and Nurses.

The continuous and rapid evolution of medical technology and the complexity of delivering person-centered care in the 21st century calls for collaboration among health care professionals. Global health now "involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-clinical care" (Koplan et al., 2009, p. 1995). The need for mental health practitioners to work in interprofessional contexts requires graduate and postgraduate programs to incorporate interprofessional education into

Teaching physics to radiology residents.

OBJECTIVE: The complexity of diagnostic imaging has expanded dramatically over the past two decades. Over the same period, the time and effort devoted to teaching physics (the science and technology of the discipline) have diminished. This paradox compromises the ability of future radiologists to master imaging technologies so that they are used in an efficient, safe, and cost-effective manner. This article addresses these issues. CONCLUSION: Efforts involving many professional organizations are under way to resolve the paradox of the expanding complexity of medical imaging contrasted with th

Neurofeedback for the Education of Children with ADHD and Specific Learning Disorders: A Review.

Neurofeedback (NF) is a type of biofeedback in which an individual's brain activity is measured and presented to them to support self-regulation of ongoing brain oscillations and achieve specific behavioral and neurophysiological outcomes. NF training induces changes in neurophysiological circuits that are associated with behavioral changes. Recent evidence suggests that the NF technique can be used to train electrical brain activity and facilitate learning among children with learning disorders. Toward this aim, this review first presents a generalized model for NF systems, and then studies i
