OBJECTIVE: To determine if quantitative motor unit action potential (MUAP) analysis and peak ratio interference pattern analysis of the fifth, seventh, and eleventh cranial nerve innervated muscles are helpful in the assessment of subclinical bulbar involvement in ALS.

We retrospectively reviewed electrodiagnostic studies performed on 169 athletes with 190 sports injuries to nerve fibers. Eighty-eight percent of the injuries were to the upper extremity. Athletes participated in 27 sports, but over one third of injuries were sustained playing football. The most common injuries were burners (n = 38) and cervical radiculopathies (n = 18), followed by median (n = 28), axillary (n = 22), ulnar (n = 19), suprascapular (n = 14), and peroneal (n = 11) mononeuropathies. This is the largest reported series of sports-related nerve injuries.

Of 45 patients with acoustic neuromas (0.3-5.0 cm), 73% had facial nerve impairment on electrophysiologic testing, but only 16% had facial weakness. Cranial nerve conduction was the most sensitive measurement, especially prolongation of the ipsilateral R1 latency of the blink reflex compared with that of the contralateral reflex. The severity of nerve conduction abnormality was highly correlated with tumor size. Our results confirm and quantitate the sensitivity of nerve action potential latency in response to chronic nerve compression.

EMG and nerve conduction studies have limitations and require particular consideration in children. The indications and the main results are considered from the study of 1624 EMGs in 1385 children under 15 years old seen over a period of 3 years. Classification of cases was based on clinical criteria. Operative treatment was employed in 38 patients with cervical disc lesions. These had produced either compression of spinal cord nerves, especially C6 or C7 (22 cases), or cervical ischemic lesions (16 cases) of the centromedullary region, either isolated or associated with symmetrical, bilateral cord lesions. A study of pre- and post-operative clinical and electromyographic correlations enabled differentiation of acute cervical radioculopathies from myelopathies and definition of their progression as a function of the surgical treatment employed.

Electromyographic activity and emptying of the abomasum were studied in 3 sheep. BACKGROUND: This proof-of-concept case-control study examined the feasibility of tongue high-density surface electromyography (HDS-EMG) to detect hypoglossal neuropathy.
