Bietti crystalline retinal dystrophy with subfoveal neurosensory detachment and congenital tortuosity of retinal vessels: case report.

A 34-year-old man presented with reduction and distortion of vision in both the eyes. The best-corrected vision was 20/20 parts, N6 in either eye. The external and slit lamp examination of both the eyes was unremarkable. The fundus examination showed multiple intraretinal crystalline deposits at the posterior pole, extending up to midperiphery, tortuous retinal blood vessels with S-shaped deflections, and absent foveal reflex in both the eyes. There were no corneal crystals, and the color vision was defective in both the eyes. Fundus autofluorescence and fundus fluorescein angiogram (FFA) were

Cognitive inefficiency in depressive undergraduates: stroop processing and ERPs.

Evidence from neuroimaging studies indicates that depressive symptomatology is associated with inefficient recruitment of prefrontal brain regions while performing tasks that tax executive function. In the current study, we investigated the time-course and ERP signature of inefficient executive functioning using a verbal Stroop color-naming task. Twenty (20) undergraduates with moderate to severe BDI-II depression scores and 20 low-scoring controls completed the task. Performance measures did not differ between the two groups. Overt reaction and P300 latencies indicated that all participants s

Development of pointing device using DC-coupled electrooculogram.

The purpose of this study is to support communication of individuals with motor paralysis having difficulty verbally communicating due to illnesses such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome or brain-stem infarction. We have developed and describe a pointing device controlled by DC-coupled electrooculograms (EOGs). The visual angle of the subject is estimated from the amplitude of vertical and horizontal EOGs for determining the two-dimensional pointing position on a PC screen in real time. The eye blinking artifact is reduced using a median filter. Electrode displacement is corrected by considering the

Endogenous ouabain-like compounds in locus coeruleus modulate rapid eye movement sleep in rats.

Although the detailed mechanism of spontaneous generation and regulation of rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) is yet unknown, it has been reported that noradrenergic REM-OFF neurons in the locus coeruleus (LC) cease firing during REMS and, if they are kept active, REMS is significantly reduced. On the other hand, the activity as well as expression of Na-K ATPase has been shown to increase in the LC following REMS deprivation. Ouabain is a specific inhibitor of Na-K ATPase, and endogenous ouabain-like compounds are present in the brain. These findings led us to propose that a decrease in the leve

Cerebral moderation of cardiovascular functioning: a functional cerebral systems perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Interhemispheric and intrahemispheric balance models may be integrated to gain an increased understanding of how cerebral systems are involved in the regulation of heart rate and blood pressure. We sought to examine the relationship between left and right frontal and posterior activity and resting heart rate and blood pressure. Based on this integration, we predicted that lateral (left minus right hemisphere) and longitudinal (frontal minus posterior regions) asymmetry in cerebral activity would be related to resting measures of heart rate and blood pressure. METHODS: Resting heart

Prevalence and correlates of periodic limb movements in older women.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) are common in the elderly. However, no large polysomnographic study has closely examined the relationship of PLMS to sleep architecture and arousals from sleep. We investigated the prevalence and correlates of PLMS in a community-based sample of older women. DESIGN: Observational study, cross-sectional analyses. SETTING: Two clinical sites participating in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF). PARTICIPANTS: 455 older community-dwelling women (mean age 82.9 years) who completed in-home polysomnography at SOF visit 8. INTERVENTIO

Oculomotricity in childhood: is the normal range the same as in adults?

UNLABELLED: The study of oculomotricity is done by the evaluation of three systems: saccade eye movements (MOS), optokinetic nystagmus (NO) and smooth pursuit eye movement (MORL). The joint action of these three systems allows the visual field's establishment in different movement situations. AIM: To compare the value of oculomotricity in normal adults and children to confirm, or not if it is viable to use the same parameters of adults normality to children's exams interpretation. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical with transversal cohort. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We studied MOS, NO and MORL in 50 normal c

The effects of sleep debt and monotonous work on sleepiness and performance during a 12-h dayshift.

The study examined the effects of the amount of preceding sleep and work pace on sleepiness and cognitive performance during a 12-h dayshift. Twelve process operators (aged 28-56 years) completed a study with four single 12-h dayshifts and preceding night sleep in the laboratory. A simulated distillation process served as a work task. The 12-h shifts differed from each other in terms of the amount of preceding night sleep (23:00-06:30 hours or 2:30-6:30 hours) and work pace (slow or fast). All shifts contained four work simulation sessions of 1.5 h, and each of them included a 15-min alarm ses

Clinical and neuropsychological characteristics of pediatric epilepsy patients with atypical language dominance.

Studies on intracarotid amobarbital procedures (IAP) in pediatric patients are rare and mainly focus on practicability aspects. Very few studies have reported characteristics of children with atypical language dominance. We compared children with left-sided focal epilepsy and atypical (i.e., right or bilateral) versus left-sided language representation (n=12 versus 17). Our results indicate a higher incidence of left handedness, extratemporal lesions, an earlier onset of epilepsy, and a neuropsychological "crowding effect" with distinct nonverbal memory deficits in the atypical group. We concl

Oscillatory neuronal synchronization in primary visual cortex as a correlate of stimulus selection.

Spike and local field potential activity were recorded simultaneously from multiple sites in primary visual cortex of strabismic cats, while monocular stimulation alternated with dichoptic stimulation, inducing interocular rivalry. During interocular rivalry, there is competition between the two nonfusible stimuli presented to the two eyes, and only one stimulus is selected at any time. We biased this competition in three different ways: (1) we exploited the condition that in strabismic cats there is often one dominant eye that is selected for most of the time. (2) We presented the two stimuli

The relationship between stereopsis and monocular optokinetic optokinetic nystagmus after infantile cataracts.

PURPOSE: Visual deprivation disrupting binocular development, such as that occurring with congenital cataract, is reported to cause asymmetric monocular optokinetic nystagmus (MOKN), as well as poor sensory and motorfusional outcome. We wanted to determine if symmetric MOKN could develop in cases of congenital cataract with good fusional outcome. METHODS: We tested MOKN (with video and electro-oculographic recordings) and stereoacuity on 5 patients with good visual acuity and satisfactory ocular alignment after surgery for congenital cataract. RESULTS: Stereoacuity was better than 50 seconds

Electrophysiological findings in patients with Oguchi's disease.

Seven patients with Oguchi's disease were examined by conventional full-field rod and cone electroretinograms (ERGs), spectral characteristic studies with photopically matched short- and long-wavelength stimuli (3 of the 7 patients) and electrooculogram (EOG) (6 patients). ON and OFF photopic ERG responses, recorded with rectangular stimuli, in 3 patients were compared with those of 13 normal subjects and 13 patients with complete congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB). Conventional full-field ERGs recorded after 30 minutes of dark adaptation revealed absent rod, but essentially normal c

Eye movement abnormalities in carriers of blue-cone monochromatism.

PURPOSE: Although impaired color vision and ERG changes have been detected in carriers of blue-cone monochromatism (BCM), no eye movement abnormalities have been identified. Quantitative eye movements of three obligate carriers of BCM were analyzed. METHODS: Horizontal and vertical eye movements of three obligate carriers of two families with BCM with visual acuity of 20/20 or better were recorded using the magnetic search coil technique. Subjects were examined fixing in primary and eccentric gaze and during horizontal and vertical smooth pursuit at 20 degrees, 40 degrees, and 80 degrees per

Oscillatory activity in different motor subsystems in palatal myoclonus. A case report.

In a patient with palatal myoclonus the mutual interaction between voluntary movements and the myoclonic activity was analysed. Amplitude and frequency of myoclonic activity in hand muscles were modulated by flexions and extensions. A 1:1 relationship was found between EMG-bursts in hand muscles and palatal movements. A 1:2 relationship was found between eye and finger movements. Resetting of myoclonus in the abductor digiti minimi muscle occurred after cutaneous ulnar nerve stimulation. It is suggested that feedback plays an important role in the generation of the oscillatory activity in PM i

Abduction nystagmus in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Direct current electro-oculography revealed abduction nystagmus with hypermetric abduction saccades in 35 of 64 patients with unilateral and 55 of 66 patients with bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Slowing of abduction saccades occurred in 27 unilateral cases, mainly ipsilateral to the paretic eye, and in 36 bilateral cases. Abduction nystagmus with hypermetric abduction saccades of normal velocity is explained by an increased phasic innervation adjusted to adduction paresis. Slowed abduction saccades are attributed to impaired inhibition of the medial rectus muscle. Superposition of imp

Recovery after severe ethambutol intoxication--psychophysical and electrophysiological correlations.

Six patients with severe ocular side effects caused by therapeutical doses of the tuberculostatic drug ethambutol were investigated during the course of recovery with psychophysical and electrophysiological methods. Three patients developed an optic atrophy with permanently reduced vision as a likely consequence of additional risk factors such as diabetes, alcohol abuse, and reduced kidney function. The severity of the neuritis of the optic nerve was not related to the total intake of ethambutol. The likelihood of a permanent ocular damage increased sharply if the visual acuity had dropped bel

[Quantitative evaluation of neurovegetative systemic changes based on the degree of minute-rhythmic coupling and control quality in acute and chronic diazépam therapy of neuroses].

In 10 patients with definite forms of neurosis, controlphysiologic and biorhythmometric investigations were carried out to establish the effectiveness of diazepam therapy. After acute application of 10 mg diazepam, an increase in the degree of minute-rhythmic coupling correlated positively with a decrease of the control area, of the time adjustment of the heart rate after load-related deflection, and with an increase in a derived complex parameter of control quality. Chronic therapy with diazepam reversed the positive tendency of the biorhythmometric and control parameters. The results permit
