The possibility that parkinsonism might be caused by environmental MPTP present in soot formed from partial combustion of coal has been assessed. Soot was fractionated and the bases were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for 1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-1-methyl-4-phenylpyridine (MPTP). Although this method was considered to be capable of detecting MPTP in soot at about 1 in 10(-6) its presence was not detected.

Cancer of the major salivary glands is rare, and little is known about its etiology. We conducted a population-based case-control study to elucidate the risk factors for these tumors. Of 199 cases diagnosed with salivary gland tumors between 1989 and 1993, 150 (75%) were interviewed. We subsequently excluded nine cases based on review of pathology specimens. The authors propose an effective and simple method for the collection and concentration of enteroviruses from environmental water bodies, which is based on adsorption properties of macroporous glass (MPG). MPG enveloped in water-permeable coating permits concentration directly in the water. Poliomyelitis viruses were 100-1000-fold concentrated in laboratory trials. The advantages of the new method in comparison with the routine gauze tampon method were demonstrated in experiments with the indicator virus carried out at sewage works and under field conditions.
