The Chinese Guger-Tree (Schima superba Gard et Champ var. superba) is an important harwood species in Taiwan where the ambient SO(2) concentration in some areas is high. Seedlings were raised in field chambers with and without SO(2) to determine whether this species is affected by this pollutant. After 4 weeks of exposure to 325 ppb of SO(2), the photosynthetic rate of seedlings decreased immediately. OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness of serial measurement of plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF) and serum levels of muscle enzymes in the detection and prediction of flares of disease activity in children with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM).
METHODS: Retrospective study of serial measurements of vWF and muscle enzymes in 16 patients with JDM followed for 540 patient-months. Charts were reviewed by an investigator blinded to laboratory results, and disease flare was defined as 2 of worsening function, increasing weakness, increasing muscle enzymes, increasing medication requirements.

Precision-cut liver slices were prepared from male Sprague-Dawley rats with a Krumdieck tissue slicer and cultured in RPMI 1640 medium for up to 72 hr. After 48 hr, cytochrome P-450 content in the slices declined to 36% of levels present in freshly cut rat liver slices. Effects of explosions of different intensities on cortical response threshold (CRT) and activities of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) in the inner ear were studied on 37 guinea pigs. The results revealed various degrees of cochlear damages due to different doses of explosions, and also a negative correlation between hearing loss and the enzyme activities in both TTS and PTS. The significance of the results is discussed.

The wet weight of the stomach, small intestine, caecum, and colon were significantly reduced (p less than 0.001) in intravenously fed rats compared with orally fed controls. Murine schistosomiasis is usually associated with hepatic granulomatous lesions together with high serum and granuloma angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity. Praziquantel (PRZ) which is known to reduce granuloma size was studied to show whether this effect is related to changes in ACE activity. Furthermore, captopril was studied to show whether by inhibiting ACE activity, the drug could also affect granuloma size. PRZ, captopril, and their combination led to significant reduction in liver granuloma. However, in normal mice, captopril was shown to increase rather than decrease serum ACE.

This prospective study was performed to quantify glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme activity in deficient males and female heterozygotes. The methods used in the study were the fluorescent spot test, G6PD enzyme electrophoresis on cellulose acetate and quantitative assays. In a previous report we described the inhibitory effect of trifluoperazine (TFP) on steroidogenesis in avian granulosa cells. To clarify the possible site of action of TFP we measured the cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (CSCC) activity in a mitochondrial preparation of granulosa cells isolated from mature and developing ovarian follicles.
