PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Due to their different virulence and infectivity, both severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and H1N1 09 revealed different strengths and weaknesses in our ability to contain new viral threats over the past decade. This review focuses on recent literature around attempts to contain the impact of these two viral epidemics that have refined our approach for the future.

We describe a nosocomial outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis at the Ophthalmology Clinic in Hospital Carlos Van Buren, that affected 150 patients, during August and September of 2006. This outbreak was concomitant with a community outbreak produced by the same agent in the city of Valparaiso that affected 681 other patients. Chikungunya, caused by the chikungunya virus, recently emerged as an important public health problem in the Indian Ocean Islands and India. In 2006, an estimated 1.38 million people across southern and central India developed symptomatic disease. Epidemic conjunctivitis can be associated with viral or bacterial pathogens, whereas epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is caused mainly by adenoviruses type 8,19 and 37. OBJECTIVE: The validity of the 15-min adenovirus assay SAS Adenotest was evaluated compared with virus detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from conjunctival swabs.
METHODS: In 75 patients with assumed epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, adenovirus detection from conjunctival swabs was performed by the immunochromatographic assay SAS Adenotest and PCR.
RESULTS: In 25 patients adenovirus was detected by PCR, 18 of whom were detected by the SAS Adenotest and 7 of whom were not. No false positive results occurred. Sensitivity was 72% and specificity was 100%.
