Molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium species and genotypes in Chile.

Knowledge of species and genotypes on Cryptosporidium involved in human transmission is fundamental in studying the epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis. This is the first study in molecular epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis that has been made in Chile. Cryptosporidium parvum species and genotypes involved in human and bovine cryptosporidiosis were determined by PCR-RFLP. Low prevalence of Cryptosporidium was found in humans and cattle. Of the 127 cattle studied, only in one was C. parvum detected . Of the 68 human fecal samples studied, four contained Cryptosporidium: two patients presented Cryp

The epidemiology of occupational contact dermatitis.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) ranks first of all occupational diseases in many countries. The incidence rate is believed to be around 0.5-1.9 cases per 1000 full-time workers per year. Epidemiological studies play an important role in observing disease trends, analysing risk factors, and monitoring the effect of preventive measures. In this review article the lack of truly epidemiologic data on OCD and the difficulties of those studies are illustrated. The following issues are highlighted: case ascertainment and bias, the distribution of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in the

Making psychiatric epidemiology useful: the contribution of epidemiology to government policy.

This paper aims to discuss the contribution of epidemiology to aspects of public policy that have either a direct influence on mental health and mental disorders, or an indirect effect by influencing environmental factors which influence mental health. Both kinds of public policy will need to be considered by governments wishing to protect, promote, and improve the mental health of their populations. The paper draws on information from both relatively wealthy and low-income countries. The paper defines epidemiology and mental health policy, sets out the range of government policies which may h

Scheme of Effective Epidemiological Investigations in Trichinella Outbreaks on Pig Farms.

Trichinellosis is a parasitic, zoonotic disease caused by larvae of the genus Trichinella. Infection occurs via the consumption of raw or undercooked meat containing this parasite. Symptoms of the disease manifest as intestinal disorders, followed by facial swelling, fever, muscle pain and other symptoms, eventually leading to neurological and cardiac complications and even death. In Europe, trichinellosis is most often associated with the consumption of meat from wild boars, pigs and horses. In recent years, wild boars that are hunted illegally and not tested for Trichinella spp. have been th

Biosurveillance capability requirements for the global health security agenda: lessons from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

The biosurveillance capabilities needed to rapidly detect and characterize emerging biological threats are an essential part of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). The analyses of the global public health system's functioning during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic suggest that while capacities such as those identified in the GHSA are essential building blocks, the global biosurveillance system must possess 3 critical capabilities: (1) the ability to detect outbreaks and determine whether they are of significant global concern, (2) the ability to describe the epidemiologic characteristics of the p

The Epidemiology of Respiratory Syncytial Virus and the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in a Retrospective Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the main etiological agent in pediatric lower respiratory tract infections. The limited availability of therapeutic options for severe clinical cases associated with RSV infection makes prophylactic interventions a priority for containment. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the epidemiology of RSV in the Piedmont population and the consequences of containment measures applied during the pandemic on viral circulation in the immediate and medium-term post-pandemic phase. METHODS: This study considered all biological samples analyzed

[Trichinellosis outbreaks in Aragón (1998-2017)].

OBJECTIVE: In Aragon, official veterinary controls to detect the presence of Trichinella in meat products have allowed trichinosis to be a low-incidence disease in the form of outbreaks associated with family consumption of meat products that are not sanitarily controlled. The aim of the work was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of the trichinosis outbreaks that occurred in Aragon during the study period and the action measures carried out, which served as a basis for redesigning and strengthening prevention and control measures. METHODS: Descriptive study of the characteristic

Association between disease progression and depression onset in persons with radiographic knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Osteoarthritis (OA) disease progression may lead to deteriorating psychosocial function, but it is unclear what aspects of disease severity are related to the onset of depression. This study assessed which components of OA disease progression cumulatively contribute to depression onset in persons with radiographic knee OA. METHODS: Osteoarthritis Initiative participants (n = 1651) with radiographic disease (Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥2) in one or both knees and below the screening threshold for probable depression [Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scale <16] at

The presacral retroperitoneal approach for axial lumbar interbody fusion: a prospective study of clinical outcomes, complications and fusion rates at a follow-up of two years in 26 patients.

The presacral retroperitoneal approach for axial lumbar interbody fusion (presacral ALIF) is not widely reported, particularly with regard to the mid-term outcome. This prospective study describes the clinical outcomes, complications and rates of fusion at a follow-up of two years for 26 patients who underwent this minimally invasive technique along with further stabilisation using pedicle screws. The fusion was single-level at the L5-S1 spinal segment in 17 patients and two-level at L4-5 and L5-S1 in the other nine. The visual analogue scale for pain and Oswestry Disability Index scores were

Epidemiological studies on the health impact of air pollution in Japan: their contribution to the improvement of ambient air quality.

In Japan, during the high economic growth period (1950-1960s), air pollution due to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and dust derived from large-scale factories and power plants was apparent in many industrial districts, and it caused serious health problems such as the so-called "Yokkaichi Asthma." Many epidemiological studies have revealed the relationship between air pollution and respiratory diseases, and have provided scientific evidence for the regulatory control of air pollution. The concentration of SO2 has markedly decreased since the 1970s, and its adverse health effects have improved. In contra

Precision information extraction for rare disease epidemiology at scale.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations recently made a call to address the challenges of an estimated 300 million persons worldwide living with a rare disease through the collection, analysis, and dissemination of disaggregated data. Epidemiologic Information (EI) regarding prevalence and incidence data of rare diseases is sparse and current paradigms of identifying, extracting, and curating EI rely upon time-intensive, error-prone manual processes. With these limitations, a clear understanding of the variation in epidemiology and outcomes for rare disease patients is hampered. This challenges the pub

Sero-epidemiological studies of pathogen burden: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Methodological advances in serological testing have made it feasible to quantify antibodies to multiple pathogens simultaneously. This has been used to study the impact of pathogen burden, i.e., cumulative lifetime exposure to persistent pathogens, on health and mortality outcomes. However, definitions for pathogen burden using serological data vary considerably. It is unclear how to best combine serological data for multiple pathogens for exposure/outcome definitions in epidemiological studies. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we conducted a scoping review of all relevan

Epidemiology of classical swine fever in Germany in the 1990s.

In Germany, 424 outbreaks of CSF in domestic pigs and a great number of cases in wild boar were recorded between 1990 and 1998. Most of the federal states ('Bundesländer') were affected. Epidemiological data from field investigations combined with genetic typing allowed to distinguish seven unrelated epidemics and a number of sporadic outbreaks in domestic pigs. Detailed epidemiological data was available for 327 outbreaks. It was found that 28% of these were primary outbreaks. Most of them were due to indirect or direct contact to wild boar infected with CSF virus or swill feeding. Infected w
