Protective immunity to Schistosoma haematobium infection is primarily an anti-fecundity response stimulated by the death of adult worms.

Protective immunity against human schistosome infection develops slowly, for reasons that are not yet fully understood. For many decades, researchers have attempted to infer properties of the immune response from epidemiological studies, with mathematical models frequently being used to bridge the gap between immunological theory and population-level data on schistosome infection and immune responses. Here, building upon earlier model findings, stochastic individual-based models were used to identify model structures consistent with observed field patterns of Schistosoma haematobium infection

Modelling approaches for predicting the distribution of skin NTDs: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Skin neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as cutaneous leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, mycetoma, and podoconiosis affect millions in endemic regions, but are under-recorded despite causing significant burdens. Predictive modelling has been used to estimate the distribution and prevalence of some of these diseases, and predictions may be useful for identifying at-risk populations and guiding interventions. This review synthesises the literature on modelling approaches to predict skin NTD distributions, aiming to identify prevalent methodologies, evaluate their strengths and

Reducing rural health inequity through drone-based delivery: a spatial multi-criteria decision framework prioritizing epidemiological vulnerability in hub location.

OBJECTIVE: To alleviate spatial health inequities in rural areas by optimizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) medical hub location based on an epidemiological vulnerability-driven approach, correcting for the tendency of current logistics-centric models to overlook high-need rural populations. METHODS: A spatial multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework was developed for a simulated rural-urban fringe experiencing severe demographic aging. We defined a novel Epidemiological Vulnerability Index (EVI) incorporating three core dimensions: demographic aging, chronic disease burden (e.g., car

Mathematical model of aging in COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The aim was examination of the intimamedia thickness of carotid arteries in COVID-19 infection. METHODS: In 50 patients, the thickness of the intimomedial complex (IMT) in the common carotid arteries was measured. The values were compared with the control group in 2006-9. The condition of the lungs was assessed by ultrasound score (It score) (0-42) as mild (0-14) or mediumsevere (15-28) Covid. IMT thickening risk factors and the value of fibrinogen, IL-6 and CRP were recorded. Two IMT prediction models were formed. The socio-epidemiological model predicts the development of IMT ba

A critical assessment of the endocrine susceptibility of the human testis to phthalates from fetal life to adulthood.

BACKGROUND: A very large proportion of the literature on the endocrine disruptors categorized as anti-androgens deals with phthalates, which are produced in large amounts for use as plastic emollients and additives. In this review, we bring together and analyse work on the effects of phthalates in animals and humans at different stages of their development to assess whether or not their possible anti-androgenic properties represent a significant threat to human health. METHODS: The database PubMed was systematically searched for all English language articles until July 2013 in each subject ar

Algorithmic discovery of dynamic models from infectious disease data.

Theoretical models are typically developed through a deductive process where a researcher formulates a system of dynamic equations from hypo … clude mass action incidence and a seasonally varying transmission rate-a common feature of existing epidemiological models for childhood infectious diseases. We also find that the SINDy measles model is capable of out-of-sample prediction of a dynamical regime shift in measles case notification data. These results demonstrate the potential for algorithmic model discover …

Development of land use regression models for elemental, organic carbon, PAH, and hopanes/steranes in 10 ESCAPE/TRANSPHORM European study areas.

Land use regression (LUR) models have been used to model concentrations of mainly traffic-related air pollutants (nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM) mass or absorbance). Few LUR models are published of PM composition, whereas the interest in health effects related to particle composition is increasing. The aim of our study was to evaluate LUR models of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), hopanes/steranes, and elemental and organic carbon (EC/OC) content of PM2.5. In 10 European study areas, PAH, hopanes/steranes, and EC/OC concentrations were measured at 16-40 sites per study a

Coexposure confounding and amplification of bias-an exploration with practical interpretation and perspectives.

Epidemiologists increasingly estimate associations between mixtures of correlated coexposures and health outcomes. We propose an exploratory approach to help differentiate coexposure confounding from coexposure amplification of bias (CAB) for studies considering correlated coexposures using a case example and simulations based on observed relationships. Our example uses associations observed in published studies between co-occurring per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) biomarkers and tetanus antibody concentrations but could apply to any context where statistical modeling is performed wit

A real-time mechanistic framework for early inference of chikungunya transmission and outbreak sizes in mainland France, 2025.

In 2025, mainland France experienced an unprecedented chikungunya outbreak in Europe, likely associated with suitable climatic conditions and established presence of Aedes albopictus, the primary European vector of chikungunya virus (CHIKV). During the early phase of the outbreak (May-July 2025), when only limited case data were available, public health decision-making required rapid situational assessment under substantial uncertainty. Here, we apply a state-of-art, climate-sensitive eco-epidemiological modelling framework to infer transmission dynamics in real-time and to characterise early

A scalable variational method for estimating the latent infection-rate field of an outbreak.

In this paper, we explore whether the infection-rate of a disease can serve as a robust monitoring variable in epidemiological surveillance algorithms. The infection-rate is dependent on population mixing patterns that do not vary erratically day-to-day; in contrast, daily case-counts used in contemporary surveillance algorithms are corrupted by reporting errors. The technical challenge lies in estimating the latent infection-rate from case-counts. Here we devise a Bayesian method to estimate the infection-rate across multiple adjoining areal units, and then use it, via an anomaly detector, to

Estimating the Prevalence of Injection Drug Use Among Acute Hepatitis C Cases From a National Surveillance System: Application of Random Forest-Based Multiple Imputation.

BACKGROUND: Injection drug use (IDU) is a major contributor to the syndemic of viral hepatitis, human immunodeficiency virus, and drug overdose. However, information on IDU is frequently missing in national viral hepatitis surveillance data, which limits our understanding of the full extent of IDU-associated infections. Multiple imputation by chained equations (MICE) has become a popular approach to address missing data, but its application for IDU imputation is less studied. METHODS: Using the 2019-2021 National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System acute hepatitis C case data and publicly

A new method for the estimation of stochastic epidemic descriptors reinforced by Kalman-based dynamic parameter estimation. Application to mpox data.

In the realm of epidemiology, it is essential to accurately assess epidemic phenomena through the adoption of innovative techniques that yield reliable predictions. This article introduces an advanced method that merges the Extended Kalman Filter approach with recursive algorithms to compute critical stochastic attributes important for evaluating epidemics. A new three-dimensional discrete Markov chain is presented, according to which the total number of infections, deaths, and the duration of epidemic outbreaks are estimated. This approach represents a notable improvement over the standard es

Spatial heterogeneity analysis for the transmission of syphilis disease in China via a data-validated reaction-diffusion model.

Based on the distinctive spatial diffusion characteristics observed in syphilis transmission patterns, this paper introduces a novel reaction-diffusion model for syphilis disease dynamics, incorporating general incidence functions within a heterogeneous environment. We derive the basic reproduction number essential for threshold dynamics and investigate the uniform persistence of the model. We validate the model and estimate its parameters by employing the multi-objective Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, using real syphilis data from the years 2004 to 2018 in China. Furthermore, we expl

[Progress in research on the transmission characteristics of HIV-infected persons based on molecular network method].

HIV molecular network is a recently reported method for studying the transmission characteristics of HIV-infected people. Countries have used this method to conduct a large number of researches on transmission relations, transmission hotspots and epidemic surveillance for the purpose of providing evidence for precise AIDS intervention and control. At present, there are three major methods for constructing molecular networks in the world, i.e. genetic distance method based on pairwise alignment, phylogenetic node support method, and joint parameter method based on the two methods. This paper re

Comorbidity Scoring with Causal Disease Networks.

In recent years, there has been numerous studies constructing a disease network with diverse sources of data. Many researchers attempted to extend the usage of the disease network by employing machine learning algorithms on various problems such as prediction of comorbidity. The relations between diseases can further be specified into causal relations. When causality is laid on the edges in the network, prediction for comorbid diseases can be more improved. However, not many machine learning algorithms have been developed to concern causality. In this study, we exploit a network based machine

Preface - Emerging Viruses: From Early Detection to Intervention.

In the last decades, several viruses emerged, as the consequence of cross-species passage from animal reservoirs to human being. Emerging infections always represent a significant challenge for public health system as knowledge about specific pathogens are generally little while and no/few effective interventions are available. In this volume we explored special aspects of emerging infectious diseases including: the application of the theory of focality of diseases to infective syndrome; the human-animal inter-face focusing on influenza; the role of bats as main reservoir of emerging and novel

Infectious disease modeling methods as tools for informing response to novel influenza viruses of unknown pandemic potential.

The rising importance of infectious disease modeling makes this an appropriate time for a guide for public health practitioners tasked with preparing for, and responding to, an influenza pandemic. We list several questions that public health practitioners commonly ask about pandemic influenza and match these with analytical methods, giving details on when during a pandemic the methods can be used, how long it might take to implement them, and what data are required. Although software to perform these tasks is available, care needs to be taken to understand: (1) the type of data needed, (2) the

Reproductive and developmental effects of phthalate diesters in males.

Phthalate diesters are a diverse group of chemicals used to make plastics flexible and are found in personal care products, medical equipment, and medication capsules. Ubiquitous in the environment, human exposure to phthalates is unavoidable; however, the clinical relevance of low concentrations in human tissues remains uncertain. The epidemiological literature was inadequate for prior reviews to conclusively evaluate the effects of phthalates on male reproductive tract development and function, but recent studies have expanded the literature. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of th
