Triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, and coronary heart disease.

The National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference on Triglyceride, High Density Lipoprotein, and Coronary Heart Disease brought together experts in lipid metabolism, epidemiologists, and clinicians as well as other health care professionals and the public to address the following questions: (1) is the relationship of high triglyceride and/or low HDL cholesterol with coronary heart disease causal? (2) Will reduction of high triglyceride and/or elevation of HDL cholesterol help prevent coronary heart disease? (3) Under what circumstances should triglycerides and HDL cholesterol …

BRAIN AND EYE AS POTENTIAL TARGETS FOR IONIZING RADIATION IMPACT. PART V - ORGANIC AND FUNCTIONAL CHANGES CORRELATION ON THE EXAMPLE OF CERTAIN DISEASES.

The question about correlation between organic and functional changes in persons, exposed to radiation is still insufficiently studied. Dynamics of morbidity for different forms and classes of non-tumour diseases periodisation, proposed by epidemiologists, suggests the identification of three main periods: «early» (the first 6 post-Chornobyl accident years); «distant» (12-21 years) and «late» (22-30 years). However, the correspondence this periodisation to the results of epidemiological data, without taking into account the clinical features of the diseases, may contribute to the impression, t…

The paradigm has shifted to systolic blood pressure.

Since the middle of the 20th century, most physicians and epidemiologists assessed the risks associated with hypertension based on the level of diastolic blood pressure (DBP). In a classic paper in 1971, the Framingham Heart Study clearly showed that systolic BP more accurately described the risk of all the complications we attribute to hypertension. It took 22 years until JNC V in 1993 also used systolic blood pressure (SBP) to define hypertension in US national guidelines. Since then, the paradigm has shifted dramatically. In JNC VI (1997) and JNC VII (2003), SBP has become the primary focus…

Health effects of tremolite. Now and in the future.

Although tremolite asbestos has been well characterized since 1916, appreciation of its role in disease induction is relatively recent. It h … of unlikely and unintentional allies: industries producing tremolite-containing materials and some epidemiologists resisting attribution of risk to tremolite on the grounds that its known effects--pleural plaques, asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma--are principally due to chrysotile, which is often contaminated with fibrous tremolite. The latter group conc …

Japanese encephalitis is an arbovirosis the incidence and geographic distribution of which are increasing in rural areas of tropical and tem … ways of life of human populations, particularly for the rice-growing technics and pig breeding. The epidemiologists schematically distinguish tropical endemic areas, subtropical endemic-epidemic zones, and temperate epidemic zones. Infections after gynecologic surgery.

Infections observed after gynecologic surgical procedures are polymicrobial and require parenteral broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy until the patient has been afebrile 24 to 72 hours. Therapy should be tailored to the specific infection and patient response thereto. When the infections are complicated by abscess or infected hematoma, combination therapy appears to be effective in a shorter period of time, and surgical drainage is infrequently necessary other than drainage of those in the supravaginal, extraperitoneal space. Administration of antibiotics immediately before surgery to women

Cardiovascular birth defects and antenatal exposure to female sex hormones: a reevaluation of some base data.

A re-evaluation of the base data as reported by Heinonen et al. from the Drug Epidemiology Unit of the Boston Collaborative Perinatal Projec … such lesions. It is suggested that the result of this re-evaluation should direct the attention of epidemiologists to the quality of their base data. Re-examination of the base data of the Boston CPP does not support their reported association between the exposure to female sex hormones during pregnancy and the occurrence of cardiac malformations.

Methodological problems in eye disease epidemiology.

The recent burst of activity in eye disease epidemiology, occasioned by increases in the number of ophthalmologists with training in epidemiology and of epidemiologists interested in eye diseases, makes this an appropriate time for taking stock of methodological problems in this field. In this review, based largely on the author's personal encounter with five large epidemiologic studies (2, 7, 19, 30, 39) of the four major chronic eye diseases (senile cataract, senile macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma), the following methodological areas are discussed: quality assurance;…

Retrospective study of childhood burkitts lymphoma in north eastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is one of the leading childhood cancers in tropical Africa. Despite this, after extensive literature search most literature reviews on BL found were old. Therefore, it is useful to learn the trend in the epidemiology of BL in north eastern Nigeria especially now that changing ecology of the disease are being published. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of BL, and the pattern of distribution of the tumour in relation to gender, sites and socio-demographic background of children. METHODS: A retrospective study of cases of BL over a 20 year period in the

Tuberculosis incidence in Portugal: spatiotemporal clustering.

BACKGROUND: The statistics of disease clustering is one of the most important tools for epidemiologists to detect and monitor public health disease patterns. Nowadays, tuberculosis (TB)--an infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis--presents different (development in populations and antibiotics resistance) patterns and specialists are very concerned with it and its association to several other diseases and factors. Each year, tuberculosis kills about three million people in the world. In particular, it is responsible for the death of more than one-third of HIV-infected people…

A million persons, a million dreams: a vision for a national center of radiation epidemiology and biology.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies of radiation-exposed populations form the basis for human safety standards. They also help shape public health policy and evidence-based health practices by identifying and quantifying health risks of exposure in defined populations. For more than a century, epidemiologists have studied the consequences of radiation exposures, yet the health effects of low levels delivered at a low-dose rate remain equivocal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Million Person Study (MPS) of U.S. Radiation Workers and Veterans was designed to examine health effects following chronic ex…

A randomised controlled trial of heavy shoulder strengthening exercise in patients with hypermobility spectrum disorder or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and long-lasting shoulder complaints: study protocol for the Shoulder-MOBILEX study.

BACKGROUND: Four out of five patients with hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) experience shoulder complaints including persistent pain and instability. Evidence suggests that patients with HSD/hEDS who experience knee and back complaints improve with exercise-based therapy. However, no study has focused on exercise-based treatment for the shoulder in this patient group. The potential benefits of strengthening the shoulder muscles, such as increased muscle-tendon stiffness, may be effective for patients with HSD/hEDS who often display decreased st
