Prolonged recovery of desiccated adenoviral serotypes 5, 8, and 19 from plastic and metal surfaces in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of the spread of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) at eye care facilities (doctors' offices, clinics, hospitals) has been a major public health goal for ophthalmology for more than 50 years. The authors explored a potentially contributing attribute of the adenovirus serotypes that cause EKC. Specifically, they investigated the capacity of different clinical and laboratory ocular serotypes (AD8, 19, and 5) to survive for extended periods of time in a desiccated state. METHODS: Twenty microliters containing 2000 plaque-forming units of different ATCC laboratory adenovir

Hygiene in dental practice--Part I: Potential pathogens and possibilities of contamination.

In order to ensure adequate reduction of risks of contamination in dental practice, potential pathogens should be known and insight should be gained into possibilities of contamination. The first part of this article presents brief descriptions of the most relevant pathogenic microorganisms such as the causative agents of tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes simplex, hepatitis, AIDS and legionnaires' disease. Possibilities of contamination in dental practice are considered next, with special reference to various ways in which microorganisms can be transmitted: Hand instruments. Rotating

Cutaneous Mycobacterium Abscessus Infection Following Plastic Surgery: Three Case Reports.

AIM: Mycobacterium abscessus is ubiquitous in the environment and seldom causes infections in immunocompetent individuals. However, skin and soft tissue infections caused by M. abscessus have been reported in recent years. Additionally, the cutaneous infections or outbreaks post cosmetic surgery caused by M. abscessus have been increasing due to the popularity of plastic surgery. The main modes of transmission are through contaminated saline, disinfectants, or surgery equipment, as well as close contact between patients. This article describes three patients who were admitted to our hospital b

Toxic anterior segment syndrome after cataract surgery--Maine, 2006.

Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS), an acute, noninfectious inflammation of the anterior segment of the eye, is a complication of anterior segment eye surgery; cataract extraction is the most common form of this type of surgery. Various contaminants, usually from surgical equipment or supplies, have been implicated as causes of TASS. The syndrome typically develops within 24 hours after surgery and is characterized by corneal edema and accumulation of white cells in the anterior chamber of the eye. Although most cases of TASS can be treated successfully with topical steroids, topical nonst

Monkeypox virus transmission in tattoo parlor.

In monkeypox virus (MPXV) transmission caused by contaminated material, we have to consider that recently the outbreak of several MPXV cases was linked to tattoo parlors in Cadiz, Spain. These tattoo parlors did not cause a single outbreak, but instead are an established transmission route for MPXV, underscoring the need for increased awareness. We recommend increasing awareness among tattooists and piercers not only to protect their own safety and health, but also to prevent spreading the virus to their customers. Personal protective equipment such as gloves should be utilized and vaccination

[Is there an indication for endocarditis prophylaxis in patients with cardiac devices?].

Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) are essential in treating cardiovascular disease, but their infections are serious complications. The number of patients with CIEDs is increasing, as are CIED infection rates and related endocarditis. These infections arise either from contamination during implantation or from secondary infections. Current guidelines do not support prophylactic antibiotics for CIED patients before dental or other invasive procedures, unless the patient has other risk factors (E.g. an artificial heart valve). Patients with fever or signs of a pocket infection should

The mycoparasitic yeast Saccharomycopsis schoenii predates and kills multi-drug resistant Candida auris.

Candida auris has recently emerged as a multi-drug resistant fungal pathogen that poses a serious global health threat, especially for patients in hospital intensive care units (ICUs). C. auris can colonize human skin and can spread by physical contact or contaminated surfaces and equipment. Here, we show that the mycoparasitic yeast Saccharomycopsis schoenii efficiently kills both sensitive and multi-drug resistant isolates of C. auris belonging to the same clade, as well as clinical isolates of other pathogenic species of the Candida genus suggesting novel approaches for biocontrol.

[Detection of Brucella antigens by dot immunoassay using specific antibodies labelled with colloid gold particles].

Dot immunoassay was developed to improve the quality of laboratory diagnosis of brucellosis. Particles of colloid gold were used as a marker of specific antibodies. The method was used for detecting Brucella antigens in artificially contaminated environmental objects (soil and water) and in biological material (milk, blood serum, and visceral homogenates of animals). The sensitivity of the test system was 19.5.10(3)-62.5.10(4) CFU/ml. Specificity of the assay was tested with 10 heterologous antigenically closely related bacterial species. The proposed test system is simple, economic, highly se

Surveillance on antimicrobial resistance: bacteriological monitoring and resistance profiles of isolates from surfaces and equipment at a Ghanaian tertiary healthcare facility.

Nosocomial infections play a leading part in the infectious disease burden globally. Most developing countries, however, have limited published data on nosocomial pathogens. This study was undertaken to determine the occurrence of pathogenic microbes contaminating different objects, medical equipment and electronic devices at selected wards in Ho Teaching Hospital. The methodology involved swabbing 15 different items in 14 selected wards at Ho Teaching Hospital. The surfaces were swabbed using guidelines by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14698-1). The samples were analy

Hepatitis C Virus Dynamic Transmission Models Among People Who Inject Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Transmission dynamic model is a concrete structure to describe and investigate the complex system of host-pathogen interactions. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a blood-borne virus that is transmitted from infectious to susceptible individuals when they come into contact with HCV-contaminated equipment. Injecting drug use is the most known transmission route, and about 80% of new HCV cases have been confirmed as having acquired HCV infection via drug injection. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this review paper was to review the importance of HCV dynamic transmission model, that enable

Portable air cleaners with HEPA filtration and UV-C irradiation to reduce air contamination in a multi-patient dental environment.

BACKGROUND: Aerosols and droplets generated by dental procedures can carry infectious agents such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses (i.e., bioaerosols), contaminating the air before settling on to surfaces. METHODS: This in situ study evaluated the air decontamination achieved using two commercial portable devices equipped both with high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA) and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UV-C) in a shared dental environment located in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The environment was assessed through physical, chemical, and microbiological assays. Data were analysed

Quantification of water as a potential risk factor for cross-contamination with Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria in a poultry abattoir.

Water used in a modern poultry processing line was tested from October 2005 to June 2006 to determine the level of bacteria in an abattoir in Germany. A total of 420 water samples were taken from 14 processing sites (PSs), at 10 times, and from three different hours of the working shift at three sampling hours (SHs) at 5:00 a.m. (SH 1), 9:00 a.m. (SH 2) and 12:00 a.m. (SH 3). Each sample was assessed for the aerobic plate count (APC) and the prevalence of Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria and Yersinia over 30 sampling weeks. The APC numbers of each PS from three SHs were compared, and the pr

Transfer of pathogens to and from patients, healthcare providers, and medical devices during care activity-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The transfer of pathogens may spread antimicrobial resistance and lead to healthcare-acquired infections. We performed a systematic literature review to generate estimates of pathogen transfer in relation to healthcare provider (HCP) activities. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, Medline/Ovid, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies published before July 7, 2017. We reviewed the literature, examining transfer of pathogens associated with HCP activities. We included studies that (1) quantified transfer of pathogens from a defined origin to a de

Application of a fluorescent dual stain to assess decontamination of tissue protein and prion amyloid from surgical stainless steel during simulated washer-disinfector cycles.

Current World Health Organization guidelines pertaining to the reprocessing of surgical instruments in the face of potential iatrogenic transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (iCJD) are incompatible for the vast majority of devices. This has led to the advent of a range of new decontamination measures. Even without the implementation of these new procedures, the incidence of proven iCJD through surgery remains low. In this study, existing decontamination processes in sterile service departments have been evaluated using simulated washer-disinfector cycles on surgical grade stainless steel w
