SPAR-EEG: Selective Pass-Wise Artifact Reduction for Wearable Single-Channel EEG Denoising.

Single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) is attractive for wearable neurotechnology and brain-computer interface (BCI) applications, including assistive interfaces and clinical monitoring, but artifact suppression is difficult when auxiliary channels, artifact labels, or user-selected clean baseline segments are unavailable. We introduce SPAR-EEG, a self-contained framework for Selective Pass-wise Artifact Reduction in single-channel EEG. The framework applies three artifact-specific attenuation passes to each EEG epoch: a variational mode decomposition (VMD)-based pass for high-frequency e

A new method of spatio-temporal topographic mapping by correlation coefficient of K-means cluster.

It would be of the utmost interest to map correlated sources in the working human brain by Event-Related Potentials (ERPs). This work is to develop a new method to map correlated neural sources based on the time courses of the scalp ERPs waveforms. The ERP data are classified first by k-means cluster analysis, and then the Correlation Coefficients (CC) between the original data of each electrode channel and the time course of each cluster centroid are calculated and utilized as the mapping variable on the scalp surface. With a normalized 4-concentric-sphere head model with radius 1, the perfor

Cognitive processing characteristics of the advantage of assistant referee offside decision-making: evidence from eye movements and ERPs.

BACKGROUND: Offside decision-making in football is prone to misjudgments that significantly affect match outcomes. Although video assistant referee (VAR) technology has been introduced, it may cause game interruptions and is subject to technical limitations; thus, improving assistant referees' on-field judgment is crucial. Previous studies have focused on behavioral differences in refereeing decisions, but the cognitive processing characteristics and neural mechanisms underlying the decision-making advantage of expert assistant referees remain unclear. METHODS: A total of 26 assistant referee

Neurocognitive performances of visuospatial attention and the correlations with metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers in adults with obesity.

What is the central question of this study? Obesity is linked to cognitive deficits, elevated energy metabolic indices and low-grade systemic inflammation. Do the relationships between neurocognitive performance and the biochemical markers (e.g. energy metabolic indices and inflammatory cytokines) occur independently of factors known to be associated with neurocognitive dysfunction (i.e. cardiorespiratory fitness) in young adults? What is the main finding and its importance? Young obese adults showed poorer neuropsychological performances, aberrant neural activity and higher C-reactive protein

Autonomic and cortical reactivity in acute and chronic posttraumatic stress.

This study investigated attention (P300 amplitude) and orienting (skin conductance amplitude) to auditory tones in a standard oddball task in early trauma-exposed groups (Acute Stress Disorder: ASD) (n=12) or no ASD (n=13), compared to individuals with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (n=17) and non-trauma-exposed controls (n=17). Individuals with ASD displayed significantly higher SCR and P3 amplitudes to target tones than individuals with PTSD, non-traumatized controls, and traumatized controls. These findings suggest that attention and orienting responses are greater to neutral,

Intelligence moderates impulsivity and attention in ADHD children: an ERP study using a go/nogo paradigm.

OBJECTIVES: If the cardinal symptoms of ADHD - hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention - are combined with a learning disability (70 ≥ IQ < 85), the question arises whether a child shows hyperkinetic behaviour because of intellectual overload in a challenging situation, for example at school. Perhaps, this behaviour is not a primary attention deficit disorder but an impulse control disorder, determined by the primarily intelligence level. It raised the question whether attention deficit and impulse control regarded as behavioural inhibition deficit may depend on intelligence and therefore s

Blunted neural effects of perceived control on reward feedback in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Blunted reward processing has emerged as an endophenotype of major depressive disorder (MDD), but mechanistic understanding for this deficit remains elusive. The current event-related potential study examined whether this aberration is driven by the blunted effect of perceived control on reward processing. METHODS: We adapted a well-validated gambling task in which perceived control was exercised by choice in 29 individuals with current MDD and 31 healthy controls. We examined the reward positivity in response to personally chosen versus passively received rewards. RESULTS: We fo

[HIV glycoprotein 120: possible etiological agent of AIDS-associated dementia].

The AIDS or HIV associated dementia is a cognitive-motor disease, characterized by a strong deficit of several cognitive processes such as attention, memory, sensory perception, motor control among others. The HIV associated dementia affects 30% of adult to 50% of infant HIV positive subjects. Since neurons are not infected by HIV, its principal target in the brain is microglia. The pathophysiology of this syndrome, therefore, remains to be disclosed. Several hypothesis have been proposed, one of them suggests that opportunistic infections can affect the brain. Another hypothesis suggests that

Interictal epileptiform discharges are involved in momentary lapses of attention in children with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Attention impairments are common in children with epilepsy and widely impact their quality of life. Interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) may induce subtle dysfunctions of various cognitive processes, but data regarding the impact of IEDs on sustained attention remain limited. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of IEDs on continuous undivided attention in children with epilepsy, controlling for the number of treatments, type of epilepsy, frequency of seizures in the past year, age at onset, and comorbid attention disorder. METHODS: Using a computerize

Present-Biased Preferences Associated with Socioeconomic Status in Intertemporal Decision-Making: Evidence from Behavioral and Electroencephalographic Measures.

Background: The role of socioeconomic status (SES) in individual intertemporal decision-making has received widespread research attention. However, findings regarding its underlying psychological mechanisms remain inconclusive. This study investigates not only the association between SES and intertemporal decision-making but also the underlying cognitive neural mechanisms from both behavioral and electrophysiological perspectives. Methods: Individuals with high and low SES were recruited. In Experiment 1, a behavioral experiment used the Monetary Choice Questionnaire to measure delay discounti

Atypical predictive processing during visual statistical learning in children with developmental dyslexia: an event-related potential study.

Previous research suggests that individuals with developmental dyslexia perform below typical readers on non-linguistic cognitive tasks involving the learning and encoding of statistical-sequential patterns. However, the neural mechanisms underlying such a deficit have not been well examined. The aim of the present study was to investigate the event-related potential (ERP) correlates of sequence processing in a sample of children diagnosed with dyslexia using a non-linguistic visual statistical learning paradigm. Whereas the response time data suggested that both typical and atypical readers l

Are covered faces eye-catching for us? The impact of masks on attentional processing of self and other faces during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been confronted with faces covered by surgical-like masks. This raises a question about how our brains process this kind of visual information. Thus, the aims of the current study were twofold: (1) to investigate the role of attention in the processing of different types of faces with masks, and (2) to test whether such partial information about faces is treated similarly to fully visible faces. Participants were tasked with the simple detection of self-, close-other's, and unknown faces with and without a mask; this task relies on attentional processes. E

Blunted neural responses to monetary risk in high sensation seekers.

The sensation-seeking trait is a valid predictor of various risk-taking behaviors. However, the neural underpinnings of risk processing in sensation seeking are yet unclear. The present event-related potential (ERP) study examined electrophysiological correlates associated with different stages of risky reward processing in sensation seeking. Twenty-one high sensation seekers (HSS) and 22 low sensation seekers (LSS) performed a simple two-choice gambling task. Behaviorally, whereas LSS exhibited a risk-averse pattern, HSS showed a risk-neutral pattern. During the anticipation stage, an increas

Effects of mental fatigue on risk preference and feedback processing in risk decision-making.

Mental fatigue is a common phenomenon in modern people, especially after a long period of mental work. Individuals frequently have to make critical decisions when in a mentally fatigued state. As an important and complex cognitive function, risk decision-making might be influenced by mental fatigue, which is consequent with increased distraction and poor information processing. However, how mental fatigue shapes individuals' decision-making remains relatively unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of mental fatigue on risk decision-making performance and risk-preference i

P50, N100, and P200 Sensory Gating in Panic Disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) has been linked to abnormalities in information processing. However, only little evidence has been published for sensory gating in PD. Sensory gating describes the brain's ability to exclude stimuli of low relevance from higher level information processing, thereby sustaining efficient cognitive processing. Deficits in sensory gating have been associated with various psychiatric conditions, most prominently schizophrenia. In this case-control event-related potential study, we tested 32 patients with PD and 39 healthy controls in a double click paradigm. Both groups were com

Recognition of unilateral lower limb movement based on EEG signals with ERP-PCA analysis.

It has been confirmed that motor imagery (MI) and motor execution (ME) share a subset of mechanisms underlying motor cognition. In contrast to the well-studied laterality of upper limb movement, the laterality hypothesis of lower limb movement also exists, but it needs to be characterized by further investigation. This study used electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of 27 subjects to compare the effects of bilateral lower limb movement in the MI and ME paradigms. Event-related potential (ERP) recorded was decomposed into meaningful and useful representatives of the electrophysiological com
