The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between middle latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) and sound activated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies. We studied the effects of exercise on motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in 18 normal (control) subjects and 11 medication-free patients with cerebellar degeneration. BACKGROUND: This paper presents an investigation of auditory evoked responses in humans subjected to high altitude hypoxic conditions.
METHODS: Middle latency (MLAEPs) as well as short latency (BAEPs) evoked potentials were recorded in 10 healthy subjects, first at sea level (N), then 24 h (H1) and 72 h (H3) after their arrival at an altitude of 4350 m. The anterior visual pathway can be damaged during surgery of the anterior skull base, the sellar and parasellar area, the orbit, or the paranasal sinuses. Clinical per-operative monitoring of the visual pathway is difficult and damage to the optic nerve is often only determined late. Visual evoked potentials may provide an early indication of reversible change to the visual system and various per-operative monitoring techniques have been used. These techniques show promise but at present they are too cumbersome and give results which are too variable to be reliable in per-operative monitoring.

Thirty-six patients with multiple sclerosis were evaluated by means of brain-stem trigeminal and auditory evoked potentials. The brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were abnormal in 26 patients (72.2%). Successful cortical recordings of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) to posterior tibial nerve (PTN) stimulation were obtained in 21 (87.5%) for P1 and 22 (91.7%) for N1 of 24 infants who were followed up for at least 3 years and had a normal outcome. We performed BAEP study to evaluate acoustic nerve involvement in 102 patients affected by peripheral neuropathies of different etiology, predominantly hereditary and inflammatory acquired neuropathies. Prolonged latency of early waves, indicative of slowing in VIII nerve conduction, was found in a high percentage of cases.
