The Resurgence of Measles: A Rash From the Past.

Measles, or rubeola, remains a highly contagious infectious disease with a concerning resurgence in the United States. Despite previous control efforts, the number of reported cases continues to rise, surpassing the total for the previous year in just the first quarter of 2024 (CDC, 2024a). Emergency nurse practitioners and other emergency clinicians are likely to encounter patients presenting with concerns of or exposure to measles. However, given the low frequency of cases in the past, many emergency clinicians have likely not previously encountered measles, making identification more challe

Fever and Rash.

Infectious causes of fever and rash pose a diagnostic challenge for the emergency provider. It is often difficult to discern rashes associated with rapidly progressive and life-threatening infections from benign exanthems, which comprise the majority of rashes seen in the emergency department. Physicians must also consider serious noninfectious causes of fever and rash. A correct diagnosis depends on an exhaustive history and head-to-toe skin examination as most emergent causes of fever and rash remain clinical diagnoses. A provisional diagnosis and immediate treatment with antimicrobials and

A narrative review of the socioeconomic burden associated with generalised pustular psoriasis.

Generalised pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare, chronic and life-threatening inflammatory skin disease characterised by widespread eruption of sterile pustules. With the approval of a GPP flare treatment in several countries occurring only recently, the socioeconomic burden associated with GPP is not well established. To highlight current evidence for patient burden, healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs associated with GPP. Patient burden results from serious complications including sepsis and cardiorespiratory failure causing hospitalization and death. HCRU is driven by high hospi

[Anti-MDA5 dermatomyositis. Literature review].

Dermatomyositis positive anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (anti-MDA5 DM) is a rare disease that represents less than 2%. The prevalence of anti-MDA5 DM ranges from 7 to 60%, with higher prevalence in Asian (11-60%) and women. The clinical picture may be variable and is accompanied by the typical features of dermatomyositis, such as periorbital heliotrope (blue-purple) rash with edema, erythematous rash on the face, or the anterior chest (in a V-sign), and back and shoulders (in a shawl sign), violaceous papules or plaques located on the dorsal part of the metacarpophalangeal or

Botanical Briefs: Daffodils (Narcissus Species).

Daffodils (Narcissus species) are the most common cause of irritant contact dermatitis among florists. Calcium oxalate crystals contained in the sap of the daffodil plants lead to irritant contact dermatitis on the skin. Daffodil rash commonly presents with fissuring, scaling, and erythema of the fingertips, hands, and forearms. The best preventative measure is to wear appropriate protective gloves and clothing.

Dengue: updates for dermatologists on the world's fastest-growing vector-borne disease.

Dengue is the world's fastest-growing vector borne disease and has significant epidemic potential in suitable climates. Recent disease models incorporating climate change scenarios predict geographic expansion across the globe, including parts of the United States and Europe. It will be increasingly important in the next decade for dermatologists to become familiar with dengue, as it commonly manifests with rashes, which can be used to aid diagnosis. In this review, we discuss dengue for general dermatologists, specifically focusing on its cutaneous manifestations, epidemiology, diagnosis, tre

A masquerade of recurrent anaphylaxis.

Background: We present a case of a 37 year old man with a history of human immunodeficiency virus, latent syphilis, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder. attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, multiple drug intolerance syndrome who presented with concerns of recurrent episodes of rash and respiratory symptoms with questionable "anaphylaxis" episodes without clear etiology or known trigger. Methods: To evaluate some of the potential causes of recurrent anaphylaxis in our patient. Further evaluation through laboratory analysis and ultimately direct visualization of the patient's vocal cords
