A 6 1/2-years survey of intraocular and intraorbital foreign bodies in the North-west Frontier Province, Pakistan.

A survey of 198 patients (210 eyes) with intraocular or intraorbital foreign bodies is presented. Most were males between 16 and 30 years of age, and 6.1% of cases were bilateral. The commonest cause was a flying particle while using a hand hammer, followed by fragments of bomb and mine blasts. Intraorbital foreign bodies occurred in 78 eyes and intraocular foreign bodies in 132 eyes. Irreparable damage caused 13 eyes (6.2%) to be enucleated. Ten eyes developed severe endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis requiring evisceration. One hundred and thirty-four (63.8%) foreign bodies were removed, and

Subconjunctival Mass as Rare Presentation of Even Rarer Intraocular Medulloepithelioma: A Case Report.

Medulloepithelioma is a rare childhood embryonal tumor arising from the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium of the pars plicata. We report a case of an 11-year-old male who presented with painless loss of vision of the right eye for the last three years and progressively increasing mass on the superior aspect of the globe for the last three months. On ocular examination, a firm, non-tender mass of 4cm x 3cm was noted in the superior aspect of the globe. CT-Scan of the orbit was suggestive of a foreign body with a haemorrhage or infection. The patient underwent enucleation with minimal manipulatio

Results in the management of Bacillus endophthalmitis.

Eighteen cases of culture-proven Bacillus endophthalmitis were reviewed. The majority (13/18) were secondary to penetrating ocular trauma. Others were secondary to corneal ulcer (1), postoperative (1), and endogenous (3). Bacillus cereus was the most commonly identified species (12/18). Antibiotic sensitivities demonstrated uniform sensitivity to vancomycin and the aminoglycosides. Visual prognosis was generally poor; only two patients maintained 20/200 or better in the affected eye. Fourteen eyes were enucleated or eviscerated. The remaining two eyes had light perception vision at the last fo

Loss of eyes after intraocular lens implantation. A clinicopathologic study.

This paper describes the clinicopathologic findings in 38 eyes that were surgically enucleated or eviscerated after cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). Endophthalmitis and/or complications of wound healing accounted for loss of the eye in 29 cases. Eight of the 38 eyes had complications of IOL insertion that necessitated multiple surgical procedures. These procedures were the removal of an IOL, the secondary insertion of an IOL, and penetrating keratoplasty. Two cases of endophthalmitis were the result of contamination of the solution used to sterilize the lens.

Eye wall resections for intraocular tumors: our experience.

We conducted a retrospective review of 11 eyes undergoing eye wall resection between October 1998 and October 2009. The median age of 11 patients was 29 years. Decreased vision (eight) was the most common presenting symptom. Ciliary body medulloepithelioma was the most common clinical diagnosis (six). Medulloepithelioma was the most common histopathological diagnosis (four). The duration of follow-up ranged from 0.5 to 67 months (median 11 months). Three eyes needed to be enucleated in the postoperative period (margin involvement two eyes, recurrence one eye). Postoperative complications among

Congenital stationary night blindness with myopia: a clinico-pathologic study.

The left eye of a 77 year old male patient was enucleated because of absolute glaucoma. This eye showed subnormal electroretinogram (ERG) and oscillatory potentials preoperatively, but the other eye showed Schubert-Bornschein type ERG and monophasic dark adaptation curve. Light and electron microscopic studies of the left eye showed a normal arrangement of discs of rod outer segments, normal synaptic ends of the photoreceptors, and complete loss of ganglion cells. From the subnormal ERG in the left eye we assumed it was originally Schubert-Bornschein type ERG but inverted to subnormal type ERG

Intact globe inflation testing of changes in scleral mechanics in myopia and recovery.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of myopia-inducing and myopia recovery conditions on the scleral biomechanics of enucleated eyes of young chicks. Enucleated eyes from 5-day old chicks, with fiducial markers attached at 5 locations on the external sclera, were placed in a custom-built chamber filled with phosphate-buffered saline, and subjected to controlled increments in intraocular pressure (IOP). IOP was initially ramped from 15 to 100 mmHg and then maintained at 100 mmHg for one hour, with eyes photographed at a rate of 0.1 Hz over the same period. There were two experi

Protection of the transiently ischemic cat retina by zinc-desferrioxamine.

PURPOSE: A previous study indicated that hydroxyl radicals are generated in the cat retina during the early reperfusion phase after 90 minutes of ischemia. Salicylate was injected intravenously, and its conversion to 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) served as a marker of hydroxyl radicals. The authors attempted to prevent this free radical generation during reperfusion. METHODS: After salicylate administration, both eyes (15 minutes apart) of 15 cats were subjected to 90 minutes retinal ischemia. Following 5 minutes of reperfusion in the control eye, it was enucleated and processed for DH

Vincenz Fukala (1847-1911): versatile surgeon and early historian of ophthalmology.

Vincenz Fukala is best known for his technique of discission and linear extraction of the lens in young, highly myopic eyes--the technique adopted by Harold Ridley in preparation for lens implantation in young patients. He was Polish and trained in Vienna under Karl Ferdinand. von Arlt. Fukala practiced first in Pilsen (1889-1894), but returned to Vienna in 1895. He studied trachoma in Egypt in 1872. His research on scrofulous eye disease led him twice to the United States, in 1891 and 1892. Fukala also developed highly successful, pioneering techniques for the treatment of ectropion in blepha

Intraocular carcinosarcoma with osteosarcomatous component arising from iridociliary adenocarcinoma in a dog.

A 9-year-old neutered male Labrador Retriever presented with increased intraocular pressure in the left eye and underwent enucleation for a suspected intraocular tumor. Grossly, a white to greyish-white solid mass occupied the anterior segment and was partially contiguous with the lens. Histologically, the tumor exhibited biphasic proliferation of epithelial and mesenchymal components. The mesenchymal component showed osteoid formation, and transitional features were observed between the two components. Based on histological and immunohistochemical findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a carcin

Case report from Somalia: access to diagnose retinoblastoma among children in a resource-limited country.

Retinoblastoma, a rare cancer mostly affecting children, makes up ~3% of childhood cancers in developed countries. However, it is more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, where late diagnosis often leads to advanced disease and higher mortality rates. Here, we present a 3-year-old girl presented with leukocoria and esotropia in her left eye for 3 months. Imaging revealed lens calcification and vitreous seeding, classified as group D, stage I. The child underwent enucleation to save her life, and histopathology showed Flexner-Wintersteiner rosette cells. This case underscores the importance of eye

The use of porcine small intestinal submucosa in ten cases of feline corneal disease.

Porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) was used as a novel graft material in the management of 10 cases of feline corneal disease. Five cases had stromal ulceration associated with trauma, ocular foreign body and/or suspected infection and required a grafting procedure. Five cases had feline sequestra that were managed by a keratectomy prior to placement of SIS as a graft material. Eight eyes healed with minimal corneal scarring with a very good cosmetic and visual result. One eye with continued aqueous leakage in the immediate postoperative period required a conjunctival pedicle graft to re

Toxoplasma gondii retinochoroiditis after liver transplantation.

A 48-year-old woman with a previous a liver transplant and a cataract extraction developed a necrotizing retinochoroiditis in her right eye. Vitreous and serum cultures failed to yield a causative organism. As the retinochoroiditis progressed, visual acuity worsened to the point of no light perception, and the eye became blind and painful. An enucleation was performed and histologic examination showed Toxoplasma gondii necrotizing retinochoroiditis. This is the first histologically documented case of T. gondii retinochoroiditis after liver transplantation. The fulminant clinicopathologic appea

[Intraocular perivascular epithelioid cell tumor: report of two cases].

Two male patients presented with painless vision loss to blindness in one eye, and the radiography examinations revealed an intraocular mass suspicious for choroidal melanoma. They underwent enucleation. The histopathological and immunohistochemical findings were compatible with the diagnosis of intraocular perivascular epithelioid cell tumor. Because of its rarity, intraocular perivascular epithelioid cell tumor is easy to be confused with other intraocular tumors on histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 857-860).

[Unilateral cryptophthalmos (a clinical and morphological study)].

Cryptophthalmos is a rare ocular cup malformation, which is classified among autosomal dominant inherited diseases, but often it occurs sporadically. The pathology is characterized by the absence of eyelids or palpebral fissure or their hypoplasia, as well as by abnormal development of the eye, especially of its anterior segment. The article describes a case of total cryptophthalmos without any associated malformations, with macrophthalmos on the right eye and abortive cryptophthalmos on the left in a one-year old girl. A pathomorphological investigation of the enucleated right eyeball was car

Septic lens implantation syndrome in a cat.

A 13-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat was presented initially for a change in the appearance of the left eye. On initial examination, a small penetrating wound was suspected as the cause for a corneal scar, an anterior cortical incipient cataract and mild iritis. The cat was not re-presented until 1 year later at which time ocular pain was marked. Severe anterior uveitis and glaucoma were diagnosed and the eye enucleated. Histopathology documented intralenticular coccoid bacteria and septic lens implantation syndrome.
