[Vascular complications after cranio-facial trauma].

Despite recent advances in automobile safety, facial trauma remains a common event. Cranio-facial trauma, which usually occurs within a context of multiple trauma, can, in some patients, lead to serious life-threatening vascular complications. Such injury usually involves the carotid system (hemorrhage, aneurysm, dissection). Management of these vascular injuries must be given the same priority as other multiple trauma injuries. We present few typical cases illustrating carotid-cavernous or vertebro-vertebral fistulae, false aneurysms, arterial dissections or oro-facial bleeding. Bleeding is g

Combat Ballistic Injuries to the Face.

Combat ballistic injuries to the face present complex challenges for military medical personnel, often involving multiple traumas that require immediate intervention to preserve life and function. This review explores the mechanisms of ballistic trauma, highlighting the unique injury patterns seen in modern conflicts like those in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine. Advances in protective gear have altered injury profiles, increasing the incidence of head, neck, and facial injuries. Early evacuation and definitive care are critical, though prolonged field care settings may require adapted s…

Microvascular Replantation Following Facial Dog Bites in Children: Systematic Review and Management Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric dog bite injuries account for 1% of emergency department visits per year and represent an underrecognized and underreported public health problem. Reconstructive surgery is frequently utilized, and in the most extreme injuries, microvascular replantation may be considered. We sought to systematically review the available literature on microvascular replantation after facial dog bite injuries in children, with particular attention to perioperative morbidity and long-term follow-up. METHODS: We reviewed a case of microvascular replantation after a facial dog bite injury in

Analysis of radiographically confirmed blunt-mechanism facial fractures.

Facial fractures resulting from blunt-mechanism trauma, although common, have been infrequently evaluated in large studies that do not include confirmation of fractures based on author review of available patient radiographic studies. An 8-year review (1998-2006) of the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Registry was performed with institutional review board approval. Patients diagnosed with blunt-mechanism facial fractures were identified by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes and their facial fractures confirmed by author review of computed tomographic scans.

Head and neck trauma in sporting activities. Review of 208 cases.

Head and neck injuries due to sports and games represent 22.7% of all injuries admitted to the E.N.T. Department of the University of Perugia between 1980 and 1988. Epidemiological and causative factors of these injuries are examined by the authors, together with their treatment: the majority of accidents occurred during soccer games as a consequence of collisions between players. In these cases the most frequently recorded lesion was a nasal fracture. Other sporting activities were responsible for more serious injuries to the maxillo-facial bony, cartilaginous and soft tissue structures. Good

[Facial skeleton traumas in farmers in east-central region of Poland (part I)].

On the base of medical documentation, we presented epidemiological analysis of 215 patients treated for traumas of facial skeleton, which occurred during agricultural tasks. It was concluded that the injuries mentioned above occurred more frequently in males at the age between 18-40. The traumas in this group occurred mainly during use of jig saw or other tools and machinery used in agriculture. However in the female population injuries of facial skeleton resulted mainly from zoogenous trauma and accidental fall downs.

Nerve injuries due to obstetric trauma.

The incidence of nerve injuries among 32,637 deliveries over a period of ten years was 1.81/1000. Brachial plexus injury (1/1000) and facial nerve injury (0.74/1000) accounted for 98% of nerve injuries. Both the right and left side were involved equally. Bilateral nerve injury was not seen. Lack of antenatal care, macrosomia, abnormal presentations, and operative vaginal deliveries significantly increased the risk of nerve injuries. These babies had significantly higher incidence of meconium stained liquor and intrapartum asphyxia. Parity of the mother, gestational age and sex of the baby did

Facial Fractures in Young Adults: A National Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: "Young adulthood" is a term used to define individuals falling within the 18- to 22-year-old age range. Injuries account for more than a third of emergency department visits in this population. A particular area of concern is accidents that lead to injuries of the facial bones because they can have long-term functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial impacts. As many as 30 million young adults participate in some sort of sport in the United States per year, and facial injuries from these activities are not uncommon and thus require further exploration. METHODS: The National Electroni…

Deadly cerebral ischemia due to carotid stenosis following a facial shot with a pellet gun: An autopsy case report.

INTRODUCTION: Facial gunshot wounds have devastating functional and aesthetic consequences for the patient. If associated with penetrating craniocerebral injuries, the prognosis is rather compromised even with appropriate medical and surgical treatment. Chop-off injuries with penetrating wounds constitute a challenging situation for the facial reconstructive surgeon in facial trauma. OBSERVATION: This case involved a 49-year-old man who sustained an accidental facial shot from a pellet gun. Radiological and clinical investigations revealed complex ballistic trauma to the maxillofacial region,

Injury of the peripheral cranial nerves during carotid endarterectomy.

The incidence of local nerve injury among 192 consecutive carotid endarterectomies in 162 patients between 1977-1983 was determined from review of the medical records. Two facial nerve, 5 hypoglossal nerve, and 2 vagus nerve injuries were discovered for a total incidence of 4.7%. Only the 2 facial nerve injuries failed to improve over 2 years. Followup ranged from 1 to 60 months in this group of patients. Careful attention to details of tissue dissection at surgery should lower the incidence of nerve injury during carotid endarterectomy.
