The role of training on smallholder farmers' adoption of orange-fleshed sweet potato in Ethiopia.

Biofortified orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) offers a viable strategy for combating vitamin A deficiency in Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its nutritional benefits, its adoption among Ethiopian smallholder farmers remains limited. This study investigated the role of training in driving OFSP adoption, using a qualitative experiment grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Technology Acceptance Model. A total of 65 Ethiopian sweet potato farmers were interviewed before and after training, of which 33 were trained (17 adopters and 16 non-adopters). The findings highlight that training s…

Optimizing Farmers' and Intermediaries' Practices as Determinants of Food Waste Reduction Across the Supply Chain.

Improper stakeholder practices are considered a primary driver of food loss. This study aims to investigate the consequences of pre- and post-harvest practices on extending the shelf life of agro-food products, identifying which practices yield the highest marginal returns for quality. Using Fractional Regression Models (FRM) and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), the research analyzed data from 343 Egyptian grape farmers and intermediaries. Key findings at the farmer level include significant food loss reductions through drip irrigation (13.9%), avoiding maturity-accelerating chemicals (24%), incr…

Organochlorine pesticide use and mosaic loss of chromosome Y in a study of male farmers.

BACKGROUND: Organochlorine (OC) insecticides are a class of environmentally persistent chemicals linked to risk of several cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma and prostate cancer. In vitro and animal studies suggest some OCs may be genotoxic, but evidence in humans is limited. Mosaic loss of the Y chromosome (mLOY) is a marker of genotoxicity and genomic instability that has been associated with certain cancers and may reflect intermediate effects of pesticide exposure. We examined associations between OC use and mLOY in circulating blood of male farmers. METHODS: This investigation inclu…

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of Australian dairy goat farmers towards the control of gastrointestinal parasites.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasites such as nematodes and coccidia are responsible for significant economic losses in the goat industry globally. An indiscriminate use of antiparasitic drugs, primarily registered for use in sheep and cattle, in goats has resulted in drug-resistant gastrointestinal parasites. Very little is known about the gastrointestinal parasite control practices used by Australian dairy goat farmers that are pivotal for achieving sustainable control of economically important parasites. The study reported here provides insights into gastrointestinal parasite control pract…

Poor mental health of livestock farmers in Africa: a mixed methods case study from Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Agriculture represents the mainstay of African economies and livestock products are essential to the human population's nutritional needs. However, in many developing countries, including Ghana, livestock production fails to meet demand due to population growth and negative effects of climate change. One of the challenges to production is livestock loss affecting farmers. However, despite stressful events experienced, livestock farmers' mental health is poorly documented. This study aims to identify the root causes of livestock losses and their influence on pastoralists' mental hea…

A reconnaissance survey of farmers' awareness of hypomagnesaemic tetany in UK cattle and sheep farms.

Hypomagnesaemic tetany (HypoMgT) in ruminants is a physiological disorder caused by inadequate intake or impaired absorption of magnesium (Mg) in the gut. If it is not detected and treated in time, HypoMgT can cause the death of the affected animal. A semi-structured questionnaire survey was conducted from July 2016-2017 to assess farmers' awareness of HypoMgT in cattle and sheep in the UK. The questionnaire was distributed to farmers at farm business events and agricultural shows, and through a collaborative group of independent veterinary practices to their clients. Farmers were asked about …

Contribution of Wastewater Irrigation to Soil Transmitted Helminths Infection among Vegetable Farmers in Kumasi, Ghana.

Wastewater irrigation is associated with several benefits but can also lead to significant health risks. The health risk for contracting infections from Soil Transmitted Helminths (STHs) among farmers has mainly been assessed indirectly through measured quantities in the wastewater or on the crops alone and only on a limited scale through epidemiological assessments. In this study we broadened the concept of infection risks in the exposure assessments by measurements of the concentration of STHs both in wastewater used for irrigation and the soil, as well as the actual load of STHs ova in the …
