Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, rapidly spreading, deep-seated infection causing thrombosis of the blood vessels located in the fascia. Necrotizing fasciitis is a surgical emergency. The diagnosis typically relies on clinical findings of severe sepsis and intense pain, although subacute forms may be difficult to recognize. Imaging studies can help to differentiate necrotizing fasciitis from infections located more superficially (dermohypodermitis). The presence of gas within the necrotized fasciae is characteristic but may be lacking. The main finding is thickening of the deep fasciae due to …

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon rapidly progressing infection of soft tissue characterized by a severe inflammation of the fascia and soft tissue. The disease is associated with necrosis and subcutaneous gangrene of the inflamed tissue with systemic toxicity that carries a significant mortality unless timely diagnosed and aggressively treated. Monomicrobial necrotizing fasciitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an exceptionally uncommon condition with only few cases reported in the literature so far. We are reporting a six-month-old female infant who was previously healthy and who pres…

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is characterized by rapidly spreading necrosis of the soft tissue and fascia. It is rare, but can be fatal if not managed properly. The aim of this study was to discuss the morbidity and mortality in NF patients in terms of evaluating early diagnostic techniques and reconstructive options.
METHODS: Sixty-eight patients (59 male, 9 female; mean age 55.9 years; range 28 to 88 years) with localized NF who were treated between 2000 and 2010 were assessed retrospectively for age, sex, localization, time elapsed between onset of symptoms and diagnosis, predisp…

European archives of oto-rhino-laryngology : official journal of the European Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies (EUFOS) : affiliated with the German Society for Oto-Rhino-Laryngology - Head and Neck Surgery2012eng
Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an unusual, life threatening, rapidly advancing infection characterized by widespread fascial and subcutaneous tissue necrosis and gangrene of the skin. It most commonly affects the extremities, abdominal wall and perineum, whereas cervical NF is rare. NF of the head and neck is often caused by both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms found in the upper aerodigestive tract. Usually, cervical NF originates from odontogenic, tonsillar and pharyngeal infection, and it is very rarely a complication of surgical procedure. Without immediate surgical treatment, cervical…

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis is a common diagnosis in patients presenting with heel pain. The presence of co-existing calcaneal spurs has often been reported but confusion exists as to whether it is a casual or significant association.
METHODS: The lateral heel radiographs of nineteen patients with a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis and nineteen comparison subjects with a lateral ankle ligament sprain matched for age and sex, were reviewed independently by two observers. Objective measurements of calcaneal spur length and a subjective grading of spur size were recorded.
RESULTS: There was a s…

The following paper presents the case of a middle-aged woman, who presented with a necrotising soft tissue infection of the cervicofacial region with maggots in situ. She was managed with aggressive surgical debridement, but eventually succumbed to the disease because of erosion of the great vessels of the neck by the maggots. The purpose of this case report is to emphasise the severity of this disease and also to present an unusual case, which had a fatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly spreading, soft-tissue infection involving the subcutaneous tissues. Necrotizing fasciitis originating from a dental-related source is rare. Practitioners should be aware that this infection could occur in patients who are immunocompromised and in patients who are healthy. Practitioners must treat this disease aggressively with surgical debridement and intensive medical support.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present a case report of a man with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus in whom a periapical infection progressed into a maxillofacial space…

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare and highly lethal soft-tissue infection that involves the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and fascia. Although it can affect any part of the body, the breast is seldom involved. We describe a case of bilateral NF of the breast following elective quadrantectomy, successfully treated with antibiotics, bilateral mastectomy, and a vacuum-assisted wound closure system.

BACKGROUND: Anisomelia, or limb-length discrepancy, has disruptive effects on gait, posture, and ambulation. Limb-length discrepancy has been shown to be a factor in stress fractures in the femur and tibia, and the longer limb, a contributing factor in the development of low-back pain, a cause of scoliosis. We sought to determine whether limb-length discrepancy contributes to the frequency and severity of plantar fasciitis.
METHODS: We enrolled 26 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Direct and indirect methods were used to measure limb-length discrepancy. We took measurements from the an…

Necrotising fasciitis (NF) can complicate varicella zoster virus in children. This is rare and has not previously been reported in the plastic surgery literature. We report a case of a female toddler who developed necrotising fasciitis secondary to chicken pox. Her presentation and progress are reported, the diagnosis of necrotising fasciitis in children and the small number of case series and case control studies are discussed.

The authors present a case of an extensive fulminant necrotizing fasciitis of the left flank, thigh, and lower parts of the leg treated with debridement, split-thickness skin grafting, and a giant negative pressure wound dressing covering 0.53 m( 2) or 18% of the body surface. To the authors' knowledge, this is the largest split-thickness grafted body surface successfully treated with negative pressure wound dressing documented in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To identify if anemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypocalcemia, elevated values of creatinephosphokinase and hypoprothrombinemia are risk for mortality in necrotizing fasciitis according to the anatomical site and affected surface.
METHODS: A case and controls study was done in one prospective cohort. We documented age, associated factors, infection location, affected corporal surface, laboratory data, germs, treatment and evolution. We defined two groups of patients: deceased and survivors and we stratified in 6 subgroups according to the anatomical site.
RESULTS: 394 patients were include…

PURPOSE: To update the practitioner with causes, diagnosis, and treatment options for necrotizing fasciitis.
TARGET AUDIENCE: This continuing education activity is intended for physicians and nurses with an interest in better understanding the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis.
OBJECTIVES: After reading this article and taking this test, the reader should be able to: 1. Identify the risk factors and causes of necrotizing fasciitis (NF). 2. Describe the clinical presentation and diagnosis of NF. 3. Explain the treatment options for NF.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an exceptional and severe form of subcutaneous gangrene which requires early diagnosis and emergency treatment. We report the case of a 24 year old woman presenting with necrotizing fasciitis after pansinusitis resistant to treatment. The germ detected was pseudomonas aeruginosa. The infection was controled with intensive care, antibiotics and surgical resection of necrotic tissues. The aim of this observation is to highlight the clinical characteristics of this disease, and to insist on the necessity to recognize the early symptoms and to start treatment as soon as po…
