Group A Streptococcus (GAS) necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a difficult-to-treat bacterial infection associated with high morbidity and mortality despite extensive surgery and targeted antibiotic treatment. Difficult-to-treat infections are often characterized by the presence of bacteria surviving prolonged antibiotic exposure without displaying genetic resistance, referred to as persisters. In the present study, we investigated the presence of GAS persisters in tissue freshly debrided from patients as well as in an in vivo mouse model of NF and examined the phenomenon of antibiotic tolerance. Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe, life-threatening disease with a nonspecific clinical presentation, making it a challenging diagnosis. Early treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics and surgical debridement is crucial to prevent rapid disease progression and poor outcomes. Given its high mortality rate and ambiguous presentation, maintaining a high index of suspicion for necrotizing fasciitis is essential. In this case, a 60-year-old woman presented to her gynecologist with urinary tract infection symptoms of frequency, hematuria, and suprapubic pain, with a year-long history of night sweat

BACKGROUND: A severe infection of the skin and soft tissues, Necrotizing Fasciitis (NF), spreads quickly along the deep fascia. This study aimed to characterize the clinicopathological features, analyze the implicated bacteria's antibiotic sensitivity, evaluate surgical management, and assess the diagnostic accuracy of the Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) score in Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection (NST).
METHODS: This single-center prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of General Surgery, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, with 171 proven

Chest pain is a frequent complaint in emergency departments, with various differential diagnoses from benign to life-threatening. Hereby, we described a 60-year-old man presented with chest pain and hypotension who initially misdiagnosed as acute coronary syndrome, but was ultimately diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis. This case highlights the importance of considering rare causes of chest pain.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an uncommon soft tissue infection. Multifocal-extremity NF is a rarity with high mortality rates. Herein we report a case of bilateral non-contiguous NF of the lower extremities due to Escherichia coli with a fatal outcome, stressing the necessity of rapid and aggressive intervention in suspected cases.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection that rapidly progresses through fascial planes. Due to the latter, diagnosis in a timely manner is imperative to ultimately decrease morbidity and mortality. Such a disease process can occur anywhere in the body; however, necrotizing fasciitis of the breast is extremely rare and not well documented in the available literature. This is a case report about a 49-year-old woman who developed severe necrotizing fasciitis of both breasts following elective bilateral breast reduction. The patient developed a severe soft tissue infection leading to destruction

RATIONALE: Necrotizing fasciitis is rapidly progressive infection with high mortality rate. This study aimed to summarize the clinical and pathological presentation of this case.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 46-year-old woman patient presented to our emergency department of an obstetric and gynecology clinic on the 8th day after total abdominal hysterectomy. The abdominal wall showed pronounced signs of inflammation. Abundant purulent content was oozing from the abdominal wound.
DIAGNOSES: The patient underwent surgery. Areas of necrosis were observed on the skin around the wound, the subcutaneous fa

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBD) are organ-specific skin blistering diseases clinically manifesting as bullae and vesicles of the skin and mucous membranes. The loss of skin barrier integrity renders patients susceptible to infection. Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), a rare yet severe infectious complication of AIBD has been insufficiently documented in the literature.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 51-year-old male patient with NF initially misdiagnosed as herpes zoster. Given the local status, CT imaging, and laboratory parameters, NF diagnosis was made and the patient was t

We admitted a patient with extensive and rapidly progressing necrotizing fasciitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, cutaneous tuberculosis, and bacterial infections because of late diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis is necessary for both cutaneous tuberculosis and necrotizing fasciitis. However, these are rare clinical manifestations and are difficult to detect. Despite surgical and pharmacologic treatment, the patient had poor outcomes. We discussed the next-generation sequencing test for early tuberculosis diagnosis, especially for atypical ones. The modified and typical laboratory risk indica

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare and severe infectious disease that is often fatal and is characterized by the extensive necrosis of subcutaneous tissue and fascial planes. A number of clinical parameters have been intensively investigated to diagnose and assess the severity and prognosis of necrotizing fasciitis. Since it currently remains unclear whether these parameters are also abnormal before disease onset, the present study investigated this issue. We retrospectively recruited 38 patients, including 12 and 26 patients with necrotizing fasciitis and cellulitis, respectively. The results of

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and their life-threatening complications, such as necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and osteomyelitis (OM), increase the healthcare cost, morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus. While the early recognition of these complications could improve the clinical outcome of diabetic patients, it is not straightforward to achieve in the usual clinical settings. In this study, we proposed a classification model for diabetic foot, NF and OM. To select features for the classification model, multidisciplinary teams were organized and data were collected based on a l

BACKGROUND: Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis (PNF) is a rare complication of bacterial infection, associated with irreversible inflammatory destruction of soft tissues like subcutaneous tissue and superficial fascia. PNF can cause visual loss, septic shock and death within hours to days. Since the infection progresses rapidly from a local disease to septic shock, prompt identification and decisive interventions are mandatory.
AIM: Considering pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment options, we report a case of PNF and its outcome.
METHODS: A 69 years old male with febrile per

Surgical site infections (SSIs) after thyroidectomy are very rare as it is a clean case surgery, even the patterns for the use of prophylactic antibiotics is disputable. Cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue infections are the most common type of SSIs that develop due to the contamination of the skin flora pathogens during surgical incision. We report the case of a patient who, unlike the reports in the literature, developed necrotizing fasciitis due to Candida infection after total thyroidectomy. A 65-year-old male patient developed SSI progressing to necrotizing fasciitis four days after total t

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe, rapidly progressive infectious process characterized by rapid spread and extensive tissue destruction. This condition stems from a variety of sources, may affect any area of the body, and requires rapid diagnosis and aggressive intervention. We present a rare case of odontogenic infection progressing to acute cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis of the scalp and neck.

Necrotizing fasciitis caused by group A Streptococcus is an uncommon infection of the subcutaneous tissue and fascia, with a high mortality rate due to its rapid progression to shock and multiorgan failure. It usually develops in extremities after trauma or previous injury. Early diagnosis is essential as well as fast and aggressive management. We present a case of rapidly evolving necrotizing fasciitis despite the early diagnosis and specific treatment established.
