Gender- and Age-Specific Associations Between Body Fat Composition and C-Reactive Protein with Lung Function: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Lung function deterioration is frequently observed in overweight and obese patients. In the current study, we explored the contribution of body fat (BF) composition, particularly visceral and nonvisceral adiposity, to lung function deterioration. In addition, we examined gender- and age-specific differences in the association between the joint effects of BF% and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations with lung function. This cross-sectional study involved 17,802 subjects undergoing health check-up. Clinical characteristics, body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and lu

The role of gut in type 2 diabetes mellitus during whole body gamma irradiation in high-fat diet Wistar rats.

PURPOSE: The effects of a low rate (100 mGy/min) fractionated whole body gamma irradiation (FWBGI) at different doses were assessed using a real-time PCR technique on the expression of some target genes implicated in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in high-fat diet (HFD) Wistar rats. METHOD: HFD Wistar rats were exposed to different doses (12, 24 and 48 Gy) divided into 24 fractions (three times a week for two months), thus, the daily doses were 0.5, 1, 2 Gy, respectively. Total RNA was extracted and the expression of target genes was measured in the four intestinal segments (duod

Dietary Sparassis crispa Reduces Body Fat Mass and Hepatic Lipid Levels by Enhancing Energy Expenditure and Suppressing Lipogenesis in Rats.

Accumulation of abdominal fat triggers metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities, such as dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance or hyperinsulinemia, and hypertension, that leads to the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Mushrooms have been used as a foodstuff and folk medicine worldwide. Among these mushrooms, Sparassis crispa (SC) is a relatively newly cultivated edible and medicinal mushroom, which has been reported to have anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive properties. However, little is known about the anti-obesity and anti-hyperlip

Increased maternal abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness and body mass index are associated with increased cesarean delivery: A prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Early pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is known to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes but does not account for body fat distribution. This study aimed to determine prospectively whether maternal abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness (SCFT) measured by ultrasound at the fetal morphology scan is a better predictor than BMI of mode of delivery and other pregnancy outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of women delivering singleton neonates at a tertiary public hospital. Women were included if they had appropriate images at the routine fetal anomaly ultras

Common genetic variants highlight the role of insulin resistance and body fat distribution in type 2 diabetes, independent of obesity.

We aimed to validate genetic variants as instruments for insulin resistance and secretion, to characterize their association with intermediate phenotypes, and to investigate their role in type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk among normal-weight, overweight, and obese individuals. We investigated the association of genetic scores with euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp- and oral glucose tolerance test-based measures of insulin resistance and secretion and a range of metabolic measures in up to 18,565 individuals. We also studied their association with T2D risk among normal-weight, overweight, and obese in

Increased homocysteinemia is associated with beneficial effects on body weight after long-term high-protein, low-fat diet in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Diets rich in protein are often used for weight loss in obese patients, but their long-term effects are not fully understood. Homocysteine (Hcy) is considered to be a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and its levels are influenced by diet, particularly the protein and fat content. We studied the effect of diets with varying fat/protein content on body weight and composition, food intake, Hcy, B vitamins, leptin, and several pro-inflammatory cytokines. METHODS: For 2 mo, Long-Evans rats were fed either a low protein/high fat (LP), a standard control (C), or a high protein/low

Dietary supplementation of L-arginine and conjugated linoleic acid reduces retroperitoneal fat mass and increases lean body mass in rats.

We hypothesized that l-arginine and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) would have additive effects in decreasing adiposity. Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to the following dietary groups (n = 6/group; 5 wk total): 1) control (2.55% l-alanine plus 1.5% canola oil); 2) arginine (1.25% l-arginine plus 1.5% canola oil); 3) CLA (2.55% l-alanine plus 1.5% CLA); and 4) arginine plus CLA (1.25% l-arginine plus 1.5% CLA). Supplemental amino acids were provided in drinking water and CLA was incorporated into the food pellets. Daily weight gain, food intake, arginine intake, and final body and eviscerated

Dietary blueberry attenuates whole-body insulin resistance in high fat-fed mice by reducing adipocyte death and its inflammatory sequelae.

Adipose tissue (AT) inflammation promotes insulin resistance (IR) and other obesity complications. AT inflammation and IR are associated with oxidative stress, adipocyte death, and the scavenging of dead adipocytes by proinflammatory CD11c+ AT macrophages (ATMPhi). We tested the hypothesis that supplementation of an obesitogenic (high-fat) diet with whole blueberry (BB) powder protects against AT inflammation and IR. Male C57Bl/6j mice were maintained for 8 wk on 1 of 3 diets: low-fat (10% of energy) diet (LFD), high-fat (60% of energy) diet (HFD) or the HFD containing 4% (wt:wt) whole BB powd

Normal bone mineral density and lean body mass, but increased fat mass, in young adult patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia attributable to 21-hydroxylase deficiency are treated with glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoid administration, even in substitution doses, may cause decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine BMD, lean mass, and fat mass in young adult male (M, n = 15) and female (F, n = 15) patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency, who had been treated with currently recommended low doses of glucocorticoids. Measurements were performed with dual-x-ray absorptiometry. In addition, calcaneal ultrasound measurements were pe

Fear of fat, disregulated-restrained eating, and body-esteem: prevalence and gender differences among eight- to ten-year-old children.

Examined whether: (a) societal directives to be thin are perceived among children, (b) discontent with body and attitudes and behaviors associated with eating disorders begin before adolescence, and (c) these differ by sex. These issues were assessed in 239 Grade 3 students. Scales of eating and weight attitudes and behaviors for this under-studied population were either created or modified from existing instruments. These 8- to 10-year-old children expressed weight, dieting, and physique concerns that reflect Western sociocultural values and preoccupation with body weight and dieting. Sex dif

Usefulness of the Córdoba Equation for Estimating Body Fat When Determining the Level of Risk of Developing Diabetes Type 2 or Prediabetes.

Background and Objectives: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes represent major global health concerns, with obesity being a key risk factor. However, recent evidence suggests that the adipose tissue composition and distribution play a more critical role in metabolic dysfunction than the total body weight or body mass index (BMI). This study evaluates the predictive capacity of the Córdoba Equation for Estimating Body Fat (ECORE-BF) for identifying individuals at high risk of developing T2D and prediabetes. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving 418,343 Spani

The influence of high-fat and high-sucrose feeding regimes on organ weight, body weight, and serum concentration of bioelements in rats.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the most common diseases of civilization, and approximately 13 % of the world's adult population is obese. Obesity is defined as excessive accumulation of fat in the human body, which leads to adverse health effects such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease (e.g., nonalcoholic liver disease). The development of obesity is accompanied by changes in the levels of certain bioelements such as copper and zinc. These elements may have an influence on the proper functioning of the central nervous system. METHOD: Fifty-six male Wistar rats (ini

The effect of body fatness on regional brain imaging markers and cognitive function in healthy elderly mediated by impaired glucose metabolism.

Brain atrophy is related to vascular risk factors and can increase cognitive dysfunction risk. This community-based, cross-sectional study investigated whether glucose metabolic disorders due to body fatness are linked to regional changes in brain structure and a decline in neuropsychological function in cognitively healthy older adults. From 2016 to 2019, 429 participants underwent measurements for cortical thickness and subcortical volume using 3 T magnetic resonance imaging and for cognitive function using the neuropsychological screening battery.
