OBJECTIVES: Our study investigated the age-adjusted incidence rates of non-fatal overdoses by HIV status and sex, and examined trends over time.
DESIGN: We used data from the Comparative Outcomes and Service Utilization Trends study, a population-based cohort study that includes clinical and administrative health data on virtually all people with HIV (PWH) and a 10% random sample of people without HIV in the province.

Thirty virologically confirmed cases of dengue infection with a fatal outcome were studied clinically in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 1975 to 1978. All 4 dengue virus serotypes were isolated from fatal cases, but dengue type 3 was responsible for 21 (70%) of these isolates, compared to only 47% of isolates from all cases of dengue infection. Cases with cardiac hydatid cyst disease are uncommon, being approximately 0.2-2% of all cases. Most cardiac hydatid cysts are located in the interventricular septum or left ventricular wall. Pericardial location is very rare. We report on a 12 year old girl with pericardial hydatid cyst disease who was otherwise asymptomatic, having no cardiac symptomatology. Unfortunately the course of her disease was fatal. This is the first report of uncommon localized hydatid disease with a fatal outcome.

Six cases of severe hemopathy, detected following smallpox revaccination are described. Their onset was favoured by vaccinia virus-induced suppression of cell-mediated and humoral immunity. In two leukemia patients humoral immunity was present, but insufficient to assure protection of the diseased organisms, the outcome being fatal. The pancytopenia syndrome recorded in 4 patients with anergy caused by autoimmune mechanisms had different outcomes: favourable in 2 cases and fatal in the other 2 patients, who died within 4 years.

In the past two decades, Fusarium species have been increasingly recognized as serious pathogens in immunocompromised patients. The outcome of fusariosis in the context of severe persistent neutropaenia has been almost universally fatal. The treatment of fusariosis in immunocompromised patients remains a challenge and the prognosis of systemic fusariosis in this population remains poor. A 33 year-old female with minimal deviation adenocarcinoma of the endocervix is presented. In two years five biopsies were needed to make the diagnosis. There was association with bilateral mucinous cystadenomas of the ovary. Even under radiotherapy and surgical resection the clinical outcome was fatal with 2 years of survival rate. The tumor shows fairly well differentiated endocervical glands which may be confused with different forms of endocervical hyperplasia but the clinical course is aggressive and fatal.

Lassa virus (LASV) is endemic in West Africa and induces a viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) with up to 30% lethality among clinical cases. The mechanisms involved in control of Lassa fever or, in contrast, the ensuing catastrophic illness and death are poorly understood.
