Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an infrequently encountered disease with potential complications including bleeding, intestinal obstruction, intussusception, and malignant transformation. We report on two patients, father and daughter, with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome who were admitted to hospital with similar complaints of abdominal pain. The father was 37 years old and the daughter was 17. Physical examination and laboratory tests revealed small intestinal intussusception in both patients. In the daughter, the intussuscepted segment was resected. An electrosurgical snare was also used for enteroscopic

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is increasingly being recognized as a cause of community-acquired infection. Its transmission in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) has reportedly been linked to a few cases of community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) infection. Here, I describe a case of CA-MRSA transmission from a father to his child in a NICU. Recognition that CA-MRSA may be transmitted in a hospital setting raises important issues for MRSA infection control and treatment options.

We report on a female infant with lethal congenital malformations including extreme hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis, vertebral segmentation anomalies, fused costae, anal atresia, renal dysplasia, and bicornuate uterus with a double blind vagina. The VACTERL and the MURCS associations are possible diagnoses. Her father had a neurenteric cyst in infancy. He has identical vertebral and costal malformations as his daughter but is otherwise healthy. The possibility of dominant inheritance with gonosomal mosaicism in the father is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) impacts fathers as well as mothers, and is estimated to affect between 8 and 13% of fathers. Paternal PPD is a risk factor for worsened quality of life, poor physical and mental health, and developmental and relational harms in the father-mother-child triad. There are no current recommendations for PPD screening among fathers. Paternal PPD screening was piloted in an intergenerational postpartum primary care clinic.
METHODS: The pilot was carried out in an intergenerational postpartum primary care clinic located at a Midwest urban academic safety net he…

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is high in Pakistan both due to natural disasters and ongoing conflicts. Offspring of trauma survivors are at increased risk for mental and physical illnesses. Parental PTSD has been linked to troubled parent-child relationships, behaviour problems, trauma symptoms, and depression in children. This study aims to explore the acceptability, feasibility and indications of the effectiveness of group learning through play plus trauma-focused cognitive behaviour therapy (LTP Plus TF-CBT) for parents experiencing PTSD.

Young children with Down syndrome (DS) have language delays beginning early in life. Book reading with parents provides a context for capitalizing on language learning opportunities. This study evaluated the quantity and quality of language input among mothers and fathers of young children with DS during book reading interactions and investigated associations with child language. Findings revealed that mothers were more talkative and used more descriptive language, whereas fathers spent more time reading the book text. Moreover, maternal and paternal input were correlated with different measur…

Although preterm birth constitutes a risk factor for postpartum depressive symptomatology, perinatal depression (PND) has not been investigated extensively in fathers of very low (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. This study explored paternal depression levels at 3, 9, and 12 months of infant corrected age, investigating also the predictive role played by the severity of prematurity, maternal and paternal PND levels, and parenting stress. We recruited 153 fathers of 33 ELBW, 42 VLBW, and 78 full-term (FT) infants, respectively. Depression was investigated by the Edinburgh Po…

Women with endometriosis have a higher burden of anxiety and depression. Whether they are at increased risk of postpartum depression (PPD) remains unclear. We aimed to compare the risk of PPD between women with and without endometriosis and to explore mediation by previous history of major depression and infertility. In a population-based cohort study, we compared 1,159 singleton pregnancies to women with self-reported endometriosis and 74,590 pregnancies to women without endometriosis. We calculated a djusted risk ratios (aRR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) using multivariable log-binomia

We examined how masculine honor beliefs (MHBs, beliefs that violence is sometimes necessary for a man to protect himself, his family, or his reputation; Cohen & Nisbett, 1994; Saucier et al., 2015) relate to perceptions of parental retaliation against their child's sexual abusers. Participants (N = 203) read a hypothetical scenario about a father who learned that his child was molested by a male daycare worker and then violently retaliated against the male abuser. Participants completed the Masculine Honor Beliefs Scale (MHBS; Saucier et al., 2016) and rated their perceptions of the father, th

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health issues have emerged as a public health concern garnering increasing attention in recent years, especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The involvement of fathers and grandparents in infant care has been recognized as a key factor affecting maternal mental health. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between infant care assistance patterns and maternal mental health issues. This study aims to examine how infant care assistance patterns and its transitions over time affect maternal mental health in rural China.

Fathers report feeling sidelined and being treated as secondary parents in healthcare settings. Despite their vital caregiving contributions, fathers remain underrepresented in pediatric palliative care research, particularly outside oncological contexts. This qualitative study, using a phenomenological hermeneutical design, explores the lived experiences of Norwegian fathers raising children with progressive life-limiting conditions. Thirteen fathers of children aged 1-18 years participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted online or in person. All children had received a diag…

BACKGROUND: It is important for fathers to develop attachment to the fetus during pregnancy because paternal attachment to the fetus during pregnancy affects attachment to the child after birth. A continuum of paternal attachment exists from early to late pregnancy. However, few studies have longitudinally investigated the development of paternal attachment to the fetus during pregnancy. This study aimed to explore longitudinally factors related to the father’s attachment to the fetus in late pregnancy. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted using an anonymous self-administered questionna…

New paternity has been related to placenta-associated complications in pregnancy. We evaluated whether a lack of earlier pregnancies or deliveries with a current father are associated with the pregnancy, prenatal, and early neonatal outcomes after controlling for the most common maternal confounders in prospective birth cohort study. An online questionnaire was used to survey 4459 pregnant women from the Kuopio Birth Cohort in their third trimester. The topics included their history of paternity in current and earlier pregnancies. Data were combined with prenatal, perinatal, and early neonatal

BACKGROUND: The attachment between father and infant is essential to a child's later development and well-being; yet, hardly any research has examined father-to-infant attachment during the outbreak of COVID-19. This study, therefore, aims to examine psychological, interpersonal, and health-related factors associated with father-to-infant attachment at 3-12 months postpartum during the pandemic.
METHOD: An online cross-sectional study was conducted between June and December 2021. A total of 775 fathers with at least one child aged 3-12 months were recruited. Participants completed measures of…
