The existence of a fatigue syndrome after glandular fever.

This prospective cohort study was designed to test whether a distinct fatigue syndrome existed after the onset of glandular fever. Two hundred and fifty primary care patients, with either glandular fever or an ordinary upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) were interviewed three times in the 6 months after the clinical onset of their infection. At each interview a standardized psychiatric interview was given and physical symptoms were assessed. There were 108 subjects with and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection; 83 subjects had glandular fever not caused by EBV and 54 subjects had an ordina…

Studies on enterovirus in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

A large study on 121 patients with the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) that examined muscle biopsy samples for enterovirus by means of polymerase chain reaction analysis was carried out. The results were compared with those obtained from 101 muscle biopsy specimens from patients with a variety of other neuromuscular disorders (OND), including neurogenic atrophies, dystrophies, and mitochondrial, metabolic, and endocrine myopathies. Thirty-two (26.4%) of the biopsy specimens from the group of patients with CFS were positive, compared with 20 (19.8%) from the group of patients with OND, a differe…

The psychiatric status of patients with the chronic fatigue syndrome.

The prevalence of psychiatric disorder in 48 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was determined. Twenty-two had had a major depressive (non-endogenous) episode during the course of their illness, while seven had a current major (non-endogenous) depression. The pre-morbid prevalence of major depression (12.5%) and of total psychiatric disorder (24.5%) was no higher than general community estimates. The pattern of psychiatric symptoms in the CFS patients was significantly different to that of 48 patients with non-endogenous depression, but was comparable with that observed in other medi…

Detection of diaphragmatic fatigue in man by phrenic stimulation.

Transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) was measured at functional residual capacity (FRC) in four normal seated subjects during supramaximal, supraclavicular transcutaneous stimulation of one phrenic nerve (10, 20, 50, and 100 Hz--0.1 ms duration) before and after diaphragmatic fatigue, produced by breathing through a high alinear inspiratory resistance. Constancy of chest wall configuration was achieved by placing a cast around the abdomen and the lower one-fourth of the rib cage. Pdi increased with frequency of stimulation, so that at 10, 20, and 50 Hz, the Pdi generated was 32 +/- 4 (SE), 70 +/-…

[Fatigue fractures of the calcaneus in soldiers of the Federal Forces].

Fatigue fractures of the calcaneus occur more frequently today than the typical march fractures of the metatarsal bones. The cause lies in the altered method of training with repeated jumping exercises and increased strain on the calcaneus. 203 fatigue fractures of the calcaneus were seen in 5 years, almost exclusively in recruits in the first 3 months of enlistment. 10 day after the beginning of pain in the calcaneus and swellings--in half of them bilateral-the X-ray showed typical zones of densification in the calcaneus. The treatment consists of decompression for 2 weeks until the complaint…

Measuring group‑ and individual‑level change of FACIT- fatigue, NFLymSI-18 and PROMIS fatigue measures (4a, 7a and 13a) in lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue significantly impacts quality of life in lymphoma patients. Multiple patient-reported fatigue measures are used in lymphoma research, including FACIT-Fatigue and PROMIS Fatigue instruments, but direct comparisons of their responsiveness and ability to detect individual-level change in this population are lacking. This study evaluated the responsiveness and sensitivity to individual-level change of Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-Fatigue), Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Fatigue measures (4a, 7a, and 13a), and…

Exploring the shared mechanism of fatigue between systemic lupus erythematosus and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome: monocytic dysregulation and drug repurposing.

BACKGROUND: SLE and ME/CFS both present significant fatigue and share immune dysregulation. The mechanisms underlying fatigue in these disorders remain unclear, and there are no standardized treatments. This study aims to explore shared mechanisms and predict potential therapeutic drugs for fatigue in SLE and ME/CFS. METHODS: Genes associated with SLE and ME/CFS were collected from disease target and clinical sample databases to identify overlapping genes. Bioinformatics analyses, including GO, KEGG, PPI network construction, and key target identification, were performed. ROC curve and correl…

Feasibility of predicting next-day fatigue levels using heart rate variability and activity-sleep metrics in people with post-COVID fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID fatigue (pCF) represents a significant burden for many individuals following SARS-CoV-2 infection. The unpredictable nature of fatigue fluctuations impairs daily functioning and quality of life, creating challenges for effective symptom management. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the feasibility of developing predictive models to forecast next-day fatigue levels in individuals with pCF, utilizing objective physiological and behavioral features derived from wearable device data. METHODS: We analyzed data from 68 participants with pCF who wore an Axivity AX6 device on…

Test-retest repeatability for Fatigue Assessment Scale, Short-Form 6-Dimension and King's Sarcoidosis Questionnaire in people with sarcoidosis associated fatigue.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Patient related outcomes are important in sarcoidosis but the medium-term repeatability of the key patient reported outcome measure is not known. We aimed to test the repeatability of the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS), Short Form 6-Dimension (SF-6D), and King's Sarcoidosis Questionnaire (KSQ) in free living people with sarcoidosis associated fatigue. METHODS: Twelve people with sarcoidosis associated fatigue completed the FAS, short form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) and the KSQ at baseline and 12 weeks. The SF-6D utility was calculated from the SF-36. The difference between b…

Fatigue-Related Cognitive-Behavioral Factors in Survivors of Childhood Cancer: Comparison with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Survivors of Adult-Onset Cancer.

Purpose: Cancer-related fatigue is a burdensome late effect of cancer treatment. A pilot study showed the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in fatigued survivors of childhood cancer (CCS). The aim of this study is to investigate whether the six cognitive-behavioral factors that are addressed during CBT differ in CCS compared with patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and survivors of adult-onset cancer (ACS). Levels of self-esteem, optimism, and depressive symptoms, variables that are also related to fatigue, were also compared between groups. Methods: Retrospective an…

Chronic fatigue: psychometric properties and updated norm values of the Chalder fatigue scale in a cross-sectional sample representative of the German population.

BACKGROUND: The Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFQ) is a commonly used self-report instrument assessing the severity and chronicity of fatigue. We examine the psychometric properties of the CFQ and provide updated normative data for the German general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CFQ was administered to N = 2519 participants (16-96 years). Statistical analyses included the evaluation of the item properties, confirmatory factor analysis and examinig associations with mental health and sociodemographic data. CFQ cut-offs were used to estimate proportions of severe and chronic fatigue scores. …

Impact of Tai Chi Therapy on Fatigue and Cognitive Function in Individuals With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a psychosomatic disorder characterized by persistent fatigue, primarily involving physical and mental exhaustion, with greater emphasis on the latter. This leads to a deterioration in concentration and memory. These symptoms affect cognitive functions, including attention and memory, to varying degrees. Previous research has shown that Tai Chi can help reduce fatigue in individuals with CFS. However, the relationship between alleviating CFS-related fatigue through Tai Chi and its impact on cognitive functions remains unclear. The effects of Tai Chi…

A possible role for mitochondrial-derived peptides humanin and MOTS-c in patients with Q fever fatigue syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Q fever fatigue syndrome (QFS) is a well-documented state of prolonged fatigue following around 20% of acute Q fever infections. It has been hypothesized that low grade inflammation plays a role in its aetiology. In this study, we aimed to identify transcriptome profiles that could aid to better understand the pathophysiology of QFS. METHODS: RNA of monocytes was collected from QFS patients (n = 10), chronic fatigue syndrome patients (CFS, n = 10), Q fever seropositive controls (n = 10), and healthy controls (n = 10) who were age- (± 5 years) and sex-matched. Transcriptome analysi…
