This investigation examined the factor structure of the Fear Survey Schedule-III in patients with specific anxiety disorders, including patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia without panic, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety disorder NOS. Four factors were obtained, reflecting a similar structure as has been noted in other studies. However, the ability of the obtained factors to discriminate among patients with panic disorder, social phobia, and specific phobia was not high. Future directio…

UNLABELLED: This study compared anxiety, fears, depression and behavioural problems as occurring in children with congenital heart disease, comparing them with samples of normal children. It further considered the influence of maternal anxiety, as well as analyzing a subgroup of children with cyanotic forms of congenital heart disease to determine if they were at higher risk than acyanotic children for the problems identified.
METHOD: We recruited 40 consecutive children with congenital heart disease without obvious psychosocial problems from the Cardiology clinic at the Alberta Children's Ho…

The current study examined the relation between the perception that fear-stimuli are looming and fearful cognitive distortions. As hypothesized, high-fear-of-spider Ss were significantly more likely than low-fear Ss to imagine that a spider in a room would move rapidly and selectively to them in proximity, rather than towards three other individuals in the same physical space. This finding was observed with a measure of perceptual-cognitive distortion as well as with self-reports. High-fear Ss were also more likely to perceive spiders as angry and belligerent, as intending to move towards them…

We report a series of 15 patients with delusional (paranoid) disorder as defined in DSM-III-R. All were supervised by a forensic psychiatry service after violent or threatening acts. We hypothesised that delusions and actions in these patients would be congruent with an abnormal mood characterised by fear and anger. Informants and the patients indicated a pervasive and persistent abnormality of mood (fear and defensive anger), with delusions and actions that were congruent with this mood during the offence and for over a month before. Other behaviours, such as fleeing or barricading to avoid d…

The present study examined responses on the Fear Questionnaire (FQ) of 68 patients suffering panic disorder with agoraphobia, 50 social phobics, 75 subjects with 'non-clinical' panic attacks, and 188 non-panicking controls. The FQ agoraphobia and social subscales had satisfactory internal consistency and were accurate (82%) in correctly differentiating the patients. In general, the patient and control groups differed as expected. The highest level of social fear was reported by social phobics and the highest level of agoraphobic fear was reported by patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia…

Preliminary data from a blind direct interview family study indicate a significantly higher risk for simple phobia among first-degree relati … in risks for (1) other anxiety, affective, and substance abuse disorders, and (2) simple irrational fears that did not meet disorder criteria. The results suggest that simple phobia is a highly familial disorder that does not transmit increased risk for other phobic or anxiety disorders. The specificity of increased risk among the relatives of simple p …

In order to assess some psychometric properties of Marks & Mathews' (1979) short Fear Questionnaire, a Dutch translation of this form was administered to 143 phobic outpatients: 100 women and 43 men. There was a special interest in assessing validity by comparing the scores of agoraphobics, social phobics and simple phobics. The findings were that all scales have sufficient internal consistency, although the Total Phobia scale does not seem to add meaningful information to its subscales. Most scales are significantly related to neuroticism, and the Social Phobia subscale is strongly related to…

Fear Survey Schedule data are presented for a sample of 141 psychiatric patients who met the DSM-III criteria for an anxiety disorder. Diagnostic and gender differences in expressed fears are presented and the results are discussed in light of previous research.

The hypothesis that mothers of children who have symptoms indicative of separation anxiety are themselves separation-anxious was tested by scoring mothers' TAT themes for separation concerns. The stories of 15 mothers of fearful children were compared to the stories of 26 mothers of children manifesting behavior disorders and 21 mothers of children having had no psychiatric contact. Different kinds of separation concerns were found to differentiate the groups of mothers. The stories of mothers of fearful children expressed significantly more concerns about abandonment and rejection and more of…

A series of five experiments was carried out in which fear of context caused by exposure to shocks was manipulated by signaling the shocks with a discrete stimulus, signaling the days during which shocks occurred with a session-long stimulus, or switching the context between exposure and the subsequent test. All these manipulations influenced fear of the context in the manner predicted by the Rescorla-Wagner associative model. Following this, all the rats were given conditioning trials with shock and a different discrete stimulus. All preexposure treatments produced consistent and reliable int…

Many have demonstrated rapid (< 100 ms) visuo-cortical differentiation of threat-associated faces. This may go back to low-spatial frequency (LSF) visual information originating from magnocellular pathways. Yet it remains unknown whether potentially magnocellular fear signals extend beyond evolutionarily prepared emotional faces. If so, spatial frequency characteristics should modulate visual processing of faces with newly acquired threat-relevance. Furthermore, it is unclear whether sub-bands of the visual spectrum are associated with autonomic arousal. Using a differential fear-conditioning …

The surge in pandemic uncertainty has fueled a rise in LGBTQ+ crimes as societal anxieties and existing prejudices have intensified. As global crises unfold, marginalized communities like LGBTQ+ individuals become increasingly vulnerable to targeted violence, reflecting deep-seated societal tensions. This research explored the impact of pandemic uncertainty on LGBTQ+ crimes across ten selected economies (Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Russia). Unlike traditional methods that may overlook country-specific differences in panel data analysis,

Recurrent re-experiencing traumatic memory is known as a common symptom in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients, and its severity … tressors and their functional significance remain largely unexplored. Here, we developed a repeated fear recall mouse model to mimic re-experiencing symptoms in PTSD patients, and found that repeated fear recall can reinforce remote fear memory while cause anxiety-like behaviors and social preference deficits. This coincides with region-specific oligod …

Fear, anxiety, and suicidality are often conceptualized along a severity continuum; however, this view fails to capture critical mechanistic differences in how threat is processed and regulated in the brain. Here, we propose a circuit-based framework in which these states represent distinct modes of neural organization defined by their temporal dynamics, network configurations, and regulatory control. Fear is mediated by phasic, stimulus-bound processing within amygdala-centered microcircuits that enable rapid and precise responses to immediate threat. Anxiety emerges through temporal expansio…

Fear is an evolutionarily conserved survival mechanism. Fear behavior is strongly correlated with body size in dogs, the genetic basis of fear regulation independent of size-related traits remains unclear. Through cross-breed genome-wide association analysis, we identified association between HMGA2 gene and fear traits. Our functional validation revealed that viral overexpression of Hmga2 in the mouse basolateral amygdala attenuated fear memory formation independent of body weight, while Hmga2 knockout (KO) mice exhibited enhanced fear memory. Transcriptomic analyses linked Hmga2 to modulation…

Anxiety disorders involve maladaptive fear processing, yet the underlying mental representations of fear-relevant stimuli remain poorly understood. Traditional approaches have typically relied on predetermined psychological dimensions, limiting the characterization of underlying representations and consequently constraining the mechanism-based refinement of therapies. Focusing on arachnophobia as a model condition, we used a similarity-based approach to reveal mental representations of spider-related images. From 705 individuals, we analyzed 49,141 pairwise similarity judgments among 314 spide…
