Host-feeding patterns of suspected West Nile virus mosquito vectors in Delaware, 2001-2002.

Paucity of data on host-feeding patterns and behavior of 43 mosquito species that are reported as suspected West Nile virus (WN) vectors has … n to humans. Culex salinarius was the species with the most diverse host-feeding activity. Based on feeding behavior, Cx. pipiens and Cx. salinarius appear to be the most likely bridge vectors. Other species may have opportunities to be bridge vectors under special circumstances, as discussed in the paper.

A review of the physiological bases of the anorexic action of phenylpropanolamine (d,1-norephedrine).

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is a phenethylamine that induces a variety of effects including anorexia and weight loss. The present review compares the acute anorexic effects of PPA with those of amphetamine in animals and humans, describes the persistent chronic effects of PPA on feeding as well as differences in anorexic potency between the norephedrine enantiomers (d-norephedrine less than 1-norephedrine) and summarizes the generality of PPA anorexia. The review also describes the putative mechanisms by which PPA is thought to reduce feeding behavior including alteration of gastric emptying and…

Effects of Sow-Piglet Co-Feeding on Post-Weaning Welfare and Jejunal Morphological Development in Suckling Piglets.

Under intensive farming conditions, a decline in feed intake after weaning in suckling piglets often results in reduced body weight or diarr … (p < 0.05). At 16-17 days post-weaning, piglets in the CF group exhibited a significant increase in feeding behavior (p < 0.05). Compared with the NCF group, the CF group showed highly significant reductions in serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) (p < 0.01), as well as significantly increased inte …

A Systematic Review on Commercially Available and Validated Sensor Technologies for Welfare Assessment of Dairy Cattle.

In order to base welfare assessment of dairy cattle on real-time measurement, integration of valid and reliable precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies is needed. The aim of this study was to provide a systematic overview of externally validated and commercially available PLF technologies, which could be used for sensor-based welfare assessment in dairy cattle. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic literature review was conducted to identify externally validated sensor technologies. Out of 1,111 publications initia

Chronotype and disordered eating indicators: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Chronotype, a person's natural timing for sleep and daily activity, has been increasingly linked to eating patterns and obesity risk. However, evidence regarding its association with disordered eating indicators remains inconsistent. We systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the association between chronotype and disordered eating indicators in the general population. Fifty-one observational studies were included, with a mean age and BMI of participants ranging from 13.3 to 52.6 years and 19.83-40.60 kg/m2. Later chronotype was associated with higher scores in binge-eating (r: 0.39; 95% CI,

Eating Disorders in the Context of Gastrointestinal Diseases-A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: The clinical overlap between gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and psychiatric disorders represents a challenge in clinical practice. Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), may co-occur with gastrointestinal (GI) diseases and complicate their management. Orthorexia nervosa is a proposed and emerging construct characterized by pathological preoccupation with healthy eating and rigid dietary practices. This narrative review aims to summarize current evidence reg

Eating clean, feeling broken: A qualitative meta-synthesis of the lived experience of orthorexia nervosa.

Orthorexia nervosa refers to a pathological obsession with healthy eating, yet its classification, causes, and clinical relevance remain contested. This qualitative meta-synthesis explores the lived experiences of individuals with orthorexic behaviors to better understand the psychological, social, and cultural dynamics that sustain this condition. Drawing on thematic synthesis of 16 peer-reviewed, qualitative studies, three major themes emerged: (1) Origins and Motivations for Orthorexic Behavior, highlighting the role of perfectionism, identity, and sociocultural ideals; (2) The Orthorexic E

Weight and disordered eating among adolescents from low-income backgrounds.

Disordered eating affects youth from varying socioeconomic backgrounds; however, representation of youth from low-income backgrounds within disordered eating research has been limited. The aim of the current study was to examine the association between adolescent weight and disordered eating among a sample of youth from a low-income background and to examine specific socioenvironmental factors that might moderate this association. Adolescents ages 12-17 (N = 73) from a low-income background and their parents/guardians completed self-report questionnaires. Adolescent height and weight were obje

Impact of military culture and experiences on eating and weight-related behavior.

Disordered eating behaviors and obesity are becoming increasingly common among United States military personnel. However, little research has explored the role of the military environment as it may influence the development of disordered eating among personnel. The present qualitative analysis examined beliefs about how military experiences affected eating and weight-related behaviors. Military personnel who served within the last year and a year or more ago (n = 250) were recruited using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (mTurk). Data included in the present study consisted of participant responses to

Upwelling modulates seaweed biomolecule contents, altering seaweed-consumer interactions in a southwestern pacific coastal system.

Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) are among the most productive marine ecosystems, largely because of the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich seawater into coastal areas. However, the influence of upwelling on biomolecule concentrations in seaweed tissues, and how these changes affect herbivore feeding behavior, remains poorly understood. We addressed these questions by hypothesizing that physicochemical conditions associated with upwelling increase the concentration of essential biomolecules in seaweed tissues, indirectly modulating herbivore behavior. We first characterized multiple upw…

The tectal melanocortin system modulates energy-dependent visual avoidance behavior in zebrafish.

Energy homeostasis depends on both food intake and behavioral control of energy expenditure. The hypothalamic melanocortin system is classically associated with feeding regulation, but its broader behavioral roles remain less defined. Using larval zebrafish, we show that hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin (pomca)-expressing neurons project to the tectum and target neurons expressing the melanocortin receptor Mc4r. Rather than altering prey consumption, melanocortin signaling in this circuit modulates visually guided avoidance of small stimuli, an energy-demanding behavior. Sated larvae, with hi

Cognitive behavioral telehealth treatment for adolescents with loss-of-control eating: A randomized controlled feasibility study.

This study aimed to develop and test the feasibility and acceptability of a telehealth treatment for adolescent loss-of-control (LOC) eating, including the feasibility of attaining clinically meaningful outcomes. LOC-eating episodes occur when experiencing a sense of LOC while eating a subjectively or objectively large amount of food. Participants were 55 adolescents (aged 12-17) with recurrent LOC-eating episodes and elevated weight (based on age and sex-normed percentiles) who enrolled in a feasibility trial of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Five participants enrolled in the treatment d

The association between alexithymia and eating behavior in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Alexithymia, or the difficulty identifying or describing one's own emotions, may be a risk factor for dysregulated eating and excess weight gain. However, the relationships between alexithymia and eating behaviors in community samples of non-clinical youth have not been well-characterized. We hypothesized that alexithymia would be positively associated with disordered and disinhibited eating in a community-based sample of boys and girls without an eating disorder. METHOD: Two hundred children (8-17 years old) across the weight spectrum completed an interview to assess loss of contr

Delayed feeding of a high-sucrose diet led to increased body weight by affecting the circadian rhythm of body temperature and hepatic lipid-metabolism genes in rats.

Skipping breakfast is an irregular feeding behavior, typically in young people. In our previous study, we established a 4 h-delayed feeding protocol for rats as a breakfast-skipping model and showed that the 4 h-delayed feeding of a high-fat diet led to body weight gain in rats. Excess sucrose induces metabolic syndrome and fatty liver. Recently, excess sucrose intake has received increased attention. Young people generally consume more sugar than adults do. In the present study, we investigated whether a 4 h-delayed feeding promoted high-sucrose diet-induced abnormalities in lipid metabolism,…
