Fecal and urinary incontinence in primiparous women.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively investigate the relationship between anal sphincter tears and postpartum fecal and urinary incontinence. METHODS: The Childbirth and Pelvic Symptoms study was a prospective cohort study performed by the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network to estimate the prevalence of postpartum fecal and urinary incontinence in primiparous women: 407 with clinically recognized anal sphincter tears during vaginal delivery, 390 without recognized sphincter tears (vaginal controls), and 124 delivered by cesarean before labor. Women were recruited postpartum while hospitalized and intervie

Effects of wheat bran and Olestra on objective measures of stool and subjective reports of GI symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two nondigested, nonabsorbed dietary components on objective and subjective measures of gastrointestinal (GI) function. METHODS: A placebo-controlled parallel study compared the effects of wheat bran (20 g/day or 40 g/day in cereal), a well-known dietary fiber, with those of olestra (20 g or 40 g/day in potato chips), a nonabsorbed fat, on stool output, stool apparent viscosity (log peak force for extrusion [PF]), stool water content, and GI symptoms. Sixty subjects resided on a metabolic ward for 9 days: 3 days baseline and 6 day

Efficacy and safety of APT198K for the treatment of infantile colic: a pilot study.

AIM: Comparing efficacy and safety of APT198K (xyloglucan plus heat-killed Lactobacillus reuteri SGL01 and Bifidobacterium brevis SGB01) versus a lactase dietary supplement as first-line treatment of infantile colic. METHODS: Randomized, multicenter, open-label, parallel group, active-controlled study, in 46 infants aged 3-16 weeks with infantile colic, receiving APT198K or a lactase dietary supplement for 10 days. RESULTS: Number and duration of crying episodes decreased significantly versus baseline in both groups. On day 8, the mean duration of crying per episode was significantly shorter

Anal incontinence and quality of life following obstetric anal sphincter injury.

PURPOSE: The objective of our study was to identify the number of women who have long-term ano-rectal symptoms following primary repair of obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) and the effect on their quality of life. We also wished to determine the impact of the injury on decision for future pregnancies and mode of delivery in subsequent pregnancies. METHODS: A cohort of women who sustained OASI in 2004 in Ninewells Hospital were contacted (minimum 4 years post-repair). They were sent a questionnaire about incontinence of flatus, solid stools, liquid stools, severity of incontinence, qualit

Gastrointestinal effects of low-digestible carbohydrates.

Low-digestible carbohydrates (LDCs) are carbohydrates that are incompletely or not absorbed in the small intestine but are at least partly fermented by bacteria in the large intestine. Fiber, resistant starch, and sugar alcohols are types of LDCs. Given potential health benefits (including a reduced caloric content, reduced or no effect on blood glucose levels, non-cariogenic effect) the prevalence of LDCs in processed foods is increasing. Many of the benefits of LDCs are related to the inability of human digestive enzymes to break down completely the carbohydrates into absorbable saccharides

[Symptoms of fungal esophagitis in alcoholic liver disease].

Symptoms related to fungal esophagitis were studied in patients with alcoholic liver disease who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Data of 517 patients were studied retrospectively (group I) and 100 alcoholic liver disease patients, that were successively admitted to hospital, were enrolled in the prospective part (group II). Out of the 41 cases with fungal esophagitis found in group I, data of 38 could be evaluated. In group II 13 of the 93 evaluable patients had fungal esophagitis; according to Kodsi's grading 10 patients had grade 1., one patient grade 2. and two patients grade 2-

Nissen fundoplication for reflux esophagitis. Long-term clinical and endoscopic results in 109 of 127 consecutive patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the clinical and endoscopic long-term results of Nissen fundoplication in reflux esophagitis. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Nissen fundoplication has been reported to give good results in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux with success rates up to 78-97%. Most of the previous studies on long-term results of fundoplication have, however, been based on interviews with only sporadic endoscopic examinations. METHODS: Of 127 patients consecutively treated with Nissen fundoplication for reflux esophagitis, 109 were available for follow-up after a median of 77 month

Ameliorating Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder by Modulating the Gut Microbiota: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit a high prevalence (55%) of gastrointestinal symptoms (GISs) and gut dysbiosis. Most stu … ntions may alleviate symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, abnormal stool consistency and smell, flatulence, and abdominal pain. Our evidence supports that treatments involving GMMIs can be considered for children with ASD.

Effect of switching from continuous positive airway pressure to bilevel positive airway pressure on symptoms of continuous positive airway pressure-related aerophagia: an observational study part two of a two-part series.

PURPOSE: Aerophagia occurring during continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) (C-aerophagia) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea can impede treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the use of bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) for managing C-aerophagia. METHODS: Fifty-one patients newly diagnosed with C-aerophagia who switched from CPAP to auto-BiPAP were monitored. Assessment criteria included flatulence, eructation, abdominal bloating, quantitative evaluation, and onset time. BiPAP effectiveness was categorized as excellent-E (no criteria met), slight-E (partially met), or poor-…
