Verruciform xanthoma in an adolescent: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Verruciform xanthoma is a benign mucocutaneous, verrucous, papillary lesion characterized by large foam cells in the parakeratotic layer, lipid-laden macrophages (xanthoma cells), epidermal hyperplasia, and hyperkeratosis. Verruciform xanthoma is thought to be a reactive rather than a neoplastic process secondary to epithelial damage and the presence of foamy histiocytes. The human papillomavirus has not been proven to be a causative factor. Differential diagnoses include verrucous carcinoma, condyloma acuminatum, seborrheic keratosis, verruca simplex, and vulvar intraepithelial ne…

Clinical, biochemical, and immunohistochemical features of necrobiotic xanthogranulomatosis.

AIMS: To describe the clinical features of two patients with paraproteinaemia and necrobiotic xanthogranulomatosis together with detailed im … poproteins as judged by protein A-sepharose chromatography, and was also located within macrophagic foam cells of the lesion on immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSIONS: These observations demonstrate many features similar to atherosclerosis including collagen necrosis and mast cell activation.

A poly (saccharide-ester-urethane) scaffold for mammalian cell growth.

Chitosan and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) are non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible polymers extensively used in regenerative medicine. However, it is unknown whether the chemical combination of these polymers can produce a biomaterial that induces an appropriate cellular response in vitro in mammalian cells. This study aimed to test the ability of a novel salt-leached polyurethane scaffold of chitosan grafted with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) to support the growth of three mammalian cell lines of different origin: a) HEK-293 cells, b) i28 mouse myoblasts, and c) human dermal fibroblasts. Comparative Evaluation of Pressure Distribution of Three Support Surfaces Used for Pressure Injury Prevention during Prolonged Surgeries.

Pressure injuries, also known as pressure ulcers, pose a serious health care concern for patients undergoing lengthy surgeries due to prolonged immobility while under anesthesia. The occurrence of pressure injuries can be costly and adversely impact patient outcomes, leading to increased morbidity, extended hospital stays, and a reduced quality of life. One preventative approach is to use engineered support surfaces designed to redistribute pressure, thereby reducing the risk of tissue damage. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of 3 different support surfaces to redistribute pressur

[Mechanistic study of Maiguan Fukang Tablets against atherosclerosis based on UHPLC-QE-MS, network pharmacology, and animal experiments].

This study aims to investigate the anti-atherosclerotic mechanism of Maiguan Fukang Tablets(MGFK) by integrating ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole orbitrap mass spectrometry(UHPLC-QE-MS), network pharmacology, and animal experiments. UHPLC-QE-MS identified 131 compounds in MGFK. Network pharmacology databases were utilized to retrieve drug targets and disease-related targets, and a "component-target-disease" network was constructed, yielding 418 overlapping potential therapeutic targets. These targets were further analyzed via protein-protein interaction(PPI) ne

MAP17 Orchestrates SGLT2-Dependent Glycolytic Reprogramming to Drive Trained Immunity and Accelerate Atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is driven by metabolic-immune crosstalk, in which trained immunity sustains vascular inflammation. MAP17 (membrane-associated protein 17), a redox- and metabolism-regulating adaptor protein, functions as a potential upstream driver of SGLT2 (sodium-glucose cotransporter 2). We aimed to determine whether MAP17 links hyperglycemia to glycolytic activation, inflammatory polarization, and plaque progression in atherosclerosis. METHODS: MAP17 expression and its correlations with clinical risk factors were analyzed in serum from 30 patients with atherosclerosis. A traine

Lipid overload meets S-palmitoylation: a metabolic signalling nexus driving cardiovascular and heart disease.

S-palmitoylation has emerged as a critical integrator of lipid overload and cardiovascular dysfunction. Disordered lipid metabolism inundates endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells and macrophages with triglyceriderich lipoproteins, oxidized LDL and saturated fatty acids, expanding the intracellular palmitoylCoA pool and perturbing redox balance. Protein Spalmitoylation, the reversible attachment of palmitate to cysteine residues, converts excess palmitoylCoA into broad alterations in signalling and membrane dynamics. The FASN-ACSL-ZDHHC axis channel excess fatty acids into palmitoylC

Microbiome and Cardiovascular Disease.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a prime example of a systems disease. In the initial phase, apolipoprotein B-containing cholesterol-rich lipoproteins deposit excess cholesterol in macrophage-like cells that subsequently develop into foam cells. A multitude of systemic as well as environmental factors are involved in further progression of atherosclerotic plaque formation. In recent years, both oral and gut microbiota have been proposed to play an important role in the process at different stages. Particularly bacteria from the oral cavity may easily reach the circulation and …

Aspirates from these yielded fluid and were usually labelled fibrocystic change on the original cytology. Smears were retrospectively analyzed, with special attention to the background, presence and nature of the epithelial and stromal fragments, foam cells and naked nuclei in the background. RESULTS: PTs with cystic degeneration on cytology s…

Xanthogranulomatous sialadenitis clinically mimicking a malignancy: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous tissue reaction is a well-documented process that is most common in kidney. There are other uncommon sites being documented as case reports in the literature. We would like to describe the clinicopathologic findings in a case of xanthogranulomatous sialadenitis that involved the parotid gland, which was clinically thought to be a tumoral mass, and compare it with the 4 previously reported cases. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old man presented with a left parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was consistent with Warthin's tumor. The mass lesion was excised. DISC

Ultrastructural degradation of the carotid body in the aged rat: is there a role for atherosclerosis in the main carotid arteries?

No foam cells or calcium build-ups were found in the arterial walls. Such changes correspond to the process of arterial wall stiffening in old age rather than to the outright atherosclerosis. Paediatric Erdheim-Chester Disease in the Lateral Ventricle: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis caused by the expression of CD68-positive and CD1a-negative foam tissue cells, which is polar in pediatric patients. The study reports a case of an 8-year-old Chinese boy who presented with polydipsia and polyuria for 4 years, followed by central nervous system symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a large lesion in the lateral ventricle. The histiocytes stained positively for CD68, CD163 and negatively for CD1a, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and langerin, and were partially positive for S100 by immu

[Can vitamin E prevent development of coronary heart disease?].

Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) probably plays an important part in atherosclerosis. Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is a potent antioxidant carried in LDL. It increases the resistance of LDL to oxidation, thereby, among other things, inhibiting foam cell formation and proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Some animal experiments have indicated that vitamin E retards the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Observational studies (case-control and cohort) have shown that long-term treatment with vitamin E is associated with lower incidence of coronary heart disease in men and women a
