Intraocular cysticercosis.

Two intravitreal Taenia cysts were removed intact by pars plana vitrectomy from a 59-year-old woman who had never left the continental United States. The intraocular course of the cysts progressed from an initial chorioretinal location, accompanied by an intense focal inflammatory reaction, to free floating in the vitreous cavity within two months; thereafter, there was only a low-grade vitritis for an additional five months until removal. Light and electron microscopic studies suggested Cysticercus cellulosae as the infecting agent, although mature hooklets were absent. Local pork products we

Intraabdominal Mycobacterium tuberculosis vs Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare infections in patients with AIDS: distinction based on CT findings.

Abdominal CT scans of 71 patients with AIDS who had proved disseminated infection due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (27 patients) or Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare (44 patients) were reviewed retrospectively to identify radiologic features that can be used to distinguish the two infections. CT findings in patients with disseminated M. tuberculosis included focal lesions in the liver (11%), spleen (30%), kidneys (19%), pancreas (7%), and gastrointestinal tract (15%) and lymph nodes with central or diffuse low attenuation (93%). CT findings in patients with disseminated M. avium-intracellula

A systematic review of orbital apex syndrome of odontogenic origin: Proposed algorithm for treatment.

Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) can be a rare, but severe complication of an odontogenic infection and has high morbidity and mortality. Antibacterial drugs are typically an appropriate treatment choice, but the most severe cases are fungal in nature and pose a tough challenge to the clinician. The aim of this study was to determine the predisposing factors, specific aspects in its management and the appropriate treatment strategy in order to improve patient outcome. A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, PubMed Central, Web of Science, and Scopus up to February 2020, based on the associa

Brain abscess associated with Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans: case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is considered a major pathogen in localized and generalized aggressive periodontitis. A. actinomycetemcomitans has been found in various extra oral infections and most frequently in endocarditis. We report a patient with multiple brain abscesses due to infection with A. actinomycetemcomitans and review the English language literature related to this subject. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old patient with no underlying medical conditions presented with multiple brain lesions initially thought to be metastatic lesions of a tumour of unknown origin. F

Strength of evidence linking oral conditions and systemic disease.

Associations between dental diseases and systemic outcomes are potentially important because of the high occurrence of dental diseases. If this extremely common source of chronic infection (dental disease) leads to an increased morbidity and mortality rate, the public health impact of oral disease on millions of Americans would be substantial. Recent studies demonstrate an association between dental and systemic diseases, including systemic infections, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy outcomes, respiratory diseases, and increased all-cause mortality rate. Because there are several common risk

Autoimmune Kidney Diseases Associated with Chronic Viral Infections.

Autoimmune kidney diseases triggered by viruses are an important cause of kidney disease in patients affected by chronic viral infection. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is associated with membranous nephropathy and polyarteritis nodosa. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of cryoglobulinemic glomerulonephritis. Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may develop HIV-associated nephropathy, a form of collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, or various forms of immune-complex-mediated kidney diseases. This article summarizes what is known about the pathogenesis,

An outbreak of Escherichia coli O157 associated with a children's paddling pool.

In May 1992, a small, circumscribed community outbreak of infection due to verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 phage type 49 occurred in a semi-rural area of south-east Scotland. On the basis of stool cultures, six cases were identified, one of whom was asymptomatic. One child developed the haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Although the source of infection of the index case was not established nor could the extent of person-to-person spread be fully determined, the clinical, microbiological and epidemiological evidence available indicated that a children's paddling pool served as the focal po

Periodontal disease and systemic disease. Clinical information for the practicing dentist.

The relationship between periodontal and systemic disease, previously called the "focal infection theory" or "focus of infection," has become an exciting area of clinical and laboratory research. Periodontal disease has been reported to influence diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and respiratory disease. It also can influence the course and duration of pregnancy. This article reviews some of these associations and proposed mechanisms by which periodontal disease and systemic conditions influence each other. We also discuss clinical implications for our daily practice in …

Rhizopusmycosis in a harbor porpoise from the Baltic Sea.

A case of systemic mycosis due to a Rhizopus sp. infection is described in a dead-stranded, 10-yr-old, male harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the beach of Neustadt, Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea (Germany). At necropsy, granulomatous mycotic lesions in brain, lung, kidneys, testis, and draining lymph nodes were found. In addition, a focal ulcerative gastritis of the first stomach, due to a nematode infection, was present and is suspected to be the portal of entry for the fungus.

Ultrasonographic appearance of the ileocecocolic junction in cats with salmonellosis.

Salmonellosis is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella spp. When it affects the gastrointestinal tract of cats, it has a predilection for the ileocecocolic junction. Abdominal ultrasound is a valuable tool in diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases. This retrospective, single-center case series study aimed to describe the ultrasonographic abnormalities of the ileocecocolic junction in feline patients with confirmed Salmonella infection. One hundred cats presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms were tested for Salmonella between 2019 and 2022; 70 tested positive, and 30 tested negative. All

[Modern problems in the study of tick-born encephalitis natural foci].

A new conception of natural focus as anthropo-parasitic system is given by an example of tick-born encephalitis. Problems of natural foci classification and zoning of focal territories, as well as patterns of ecological relations in these systems, are considered. Causes and factors affected expansion of the infection are analyses.

Seizure in HIV-infected patients: clinical presentation, cause and treatment outcome in Ethiopia-a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The estimated number of adult patients living with HIV infection in Ethiopia in 2012 was approximately 800,000. Seizure occurs in 2 to 3% and 6.1% to 34.3% in patients with HIV infection and patients with neurological complications of HIV infection, respectively. Studies on HIV infection and seizure are rare in Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to assess clinical presentation, cause and treatment outcome of patients with HIV infection presented with seizure. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients aged ≥ 13 years with HIV infection presented with seizure were included

Cytomegalovirus-induced collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

Collapsing glomerulopathy is an aggressive morphologic variant of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis which typically presents with nephrotic syndrome and rapidly progressive renal failure. Most cases of collapsing glomerulopathy are associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection. We present a rare case of collapsing glomerulopathy associated with acute cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in an immunocompetent host with improvement in renal function after the treatment of CMV with ganciclovir. CMV may be an under-recognized cause of collapsing glomerulopathy which may respond to antiviral t

Schistosomal myelitis: findings at MR imaging.

Schistosomal spinal cord involvement is a rare complication of infection by Schistosoma mansoni. This work reports the MR imaging findings in a patient with schistosomal myelitis involving the lower spinal cord and conus medullaris. MR imaging showed a focal mass with a slightly nodular surface and which had peripheral enhancement after contrast administration. The MR appearance of this complication of schistosomal infection is important to recognize so that early medical therapy can be started in an attempt to maximize neurologic recovery.

Transmission electron microscopic observation on ultrastructural alterations in Schistosoma japonicum caused by mefloquine.

The purpose of the study was to explore the ultrastructural alterations of adult Schistosoma japonicum induced by mefloquine. Eight out of ten mice infected with 60-80 S. japonuicum cercariae for 35 days were treated orally with mefloquine at a single dose of 400 mg/kg. Four groups of two mice were killed at 8 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days post-treatment, and schistosomes were collected by perfusion technique, fixed, and examined under a transmission electron microscope. Schistosomes obtained from the remaining two mice served as control. Eight hours after mefloquine 400 mg/kg was administered t

Temporomandibular Joint Septic Arthritis and Mandibular Osteomyelitis Arising From an Odontogenic Infection: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Septic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has been infrequently reported in the literature. Some investigators believe that this condition is under-reported because it is underdiagnosed. Misdiagnosis or late diagnosis of this condition can lead to serious morbidity, including fistula formation, intracranial abscess, fibrous or bony ankylosis, temporal bone or condylar osteomyelitis, growth alteration, and several others. This report describes a case of septic TMJ arthritis arising from direct spread of an odontogenic infection with subsequent development of mandibular osteomyelitis
