Bilateral Proximal Humerus Lesser Tuberosity Avulsions in an Adolescent Patient: A Case Report.

CASE: Fourteen-year-old boy presented with bilateral proximal humerus lesser tuberosity avulsions after swinging between 2 desks. Injuries were not visualized on radiographs but identified on magnetic resonance imaging. He underwent bilateral open reduction and internal fixation of the bony avulsions. Following repair, he returned to full activities, including sports, without limitations. CONCLUSION: Lesser tuberosity avulsions are rare injuries in the pediatric population that can be missed. Our case is a low energy noncontact mechanism resulting in bilateral injury, highlighting the importa

Understanding the mechanism of injury and fracture pattern of paediatric triplane ankle fractures versus adult trimalleolar fractures.

AIMS: Paediatric triplane fractures and adult trimalleolar ankle fractures both arise from a supination external rotation injury. By relating the experience of adult to paediatric fractures, clarification has been sought on the sequence of injury, ligament involvement, and fracture pattern of triplane fractures. This study explores the similarities between triplane and trimalleolar fractures for each stage of the Lauge-Hansen classification, with the aim of aiding reduction and fixation techniques. METHODS: Imaging data of 83 paediatric patients with triplane fractures and 100 adult patients

Management of transverse root fractures in dental trauma.

The management of complex dental trauma can be modulated according to the emergencies that may arise over time. Clinical management of transverse root fractures may require different therapies based on situations, such as delay and error in the treatment of an avulsion trauma associated with apical third root fracture, patient's poor compliance, or external and internal root resorption. The primary aim of this article was to review studies regarding root fractures in the permanent dentition and root fracture management. The secondary aim was to present the inflammatory reaction and the complic

Clinical Presentation, Causes, Treatment, and Outcome of Lip Avulsion Injuries in Dogs and Cats: 24 Cases (2001-2017).

Lip avulsions are a common result of orofacial trauma in dogs and cats. Vehicular trauma and bite wounds are common causes. Surgical therapy is highly successful with early decontamination and tension-free closure. This retrospective case series assessed the signalment, causes, lesion location, treatment and outcome of lip avulsion injuries in dogs and cats. A total of 23 patients with 24 lip avulsion injuries were included in the study. They were comprised of 11 dogs and 12 cats. The patients were generally young, with 68.2% under 3 years of age and 36.4% under 1 year of age. The most common

Fracture of the superior border of the scapula.

Twenty-four patients who sustained a fracture of the superior border of the scapula are reviewed. All were associated with a fracture of the coracoid process and other shoulder injuries. There were 19 long fracture lines and 5 short. The former and 3 of the latter were extensions of a coracoid fracture; in 2, there appeared to be an avulsion fracture by traction through the superior transverse scapular ligament resulting from the upward displacement of the coracoid.

Ulnar collateral ligament injuries of the thumb: 10 years of surgical experience.

Over 10 years in our unit, 127 patients underwent surgical repair of an acute thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) rupture for clinically unstable injuries or displaced avulsion fractures. Ultrasound was used when clinical diagnosis was uncertain. The male/female ratio was 3:2, with a mean age of 40 years (range: 12-81 years). Most of them (> or =66%) were hyper-extension/abduction injuries. The most common cause was a fall (49%), followed by sports injuries; skiing accounted for only 2.4%. Ultrasound was 92% sensitive for UCL ruptures (positive predictive value (PPV) 99%). Over 99% of patien

Approach to mallet finger injury: Practical guide for Canadian primary care physicians.

OBJECTIVE: To provide primary care physicians with an evidence-based approach to recognizing and managing mallet finger injuries. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar using relevant key words and subject headings. Recommendations were categorized based on clinical evidence and expert opinion using a 3-level classification system. MAIN MESSAGE: A mallet finger injury commonly occurs after an axial load, resulting in avulsion of the extensor tendon from the distal phalanx. This may occur with or without an avulsion fracture. Diagnosis is made c

Tibial Tuberosity Avulsion in an Adult Female With Patellar Tendon and Retinacular Repair Enhanced by Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Augmentation: A Case Report.

Tibial tuberosity avulsion fractures are rare injuries, most commonly seen in adolescent males during high-energy activities. These fractures are uncommon, specifically in adults, due to the closure of the physis. In particular, skeletally mature female avulsions are rarely reported in the literature. Significant displacement of the tibial tubercle often necessitates surgical management to restore the extensor mechanism and maintain knee stability. In this case report, we present a 21-year-old female who sustained a tibial tuberosity avulsion fracture with an associated patellar tendon rupture

Arthroscopic reduction of adult comminuted tibial eminence avulsion with single tunnel pull-through suture fixation: A case report of technical note.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Tibial eminence avulsion is an exceptional knee injury in the adult population. The treatment of this injury is generally based on the pattern of the fragment fracture displacement and operative treatment is recommended for comminuted eminence fracture to prevent nonunion and knee instability. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a 30-years-old female with severe left knee pain after falling from a motorcycle. Physical examination showed moderate left knee effusion with restricted knee joint range of motion from 0 to 90°. Anterior drawer test was positive without openin

Mallet finger: a simulation and analysis of hyperflexion versus hyperextension injuries.

The goal of this study was to simulate the mechanisms of hyperflexion and hyperextension injuries of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint of the hand and to analyze the resulting extensor tendon injury patterns. The hypotheses were raised that hyperflexion trauma leads to a plastic deformation of the extensor tendon aponeurosis, with or without a small bony avulsion fragment but without joint surface involvement, and that hyperextension injuries can create a shear fracture of the dorsal lip of the distal phalanx, without injury to the extensor tendon aponeurosis. Upper pole sleeve fracture of the patella secondary to patellar dislocation: A case report.

RATIONALE: Upper pole sleeve fractures of the patella are rare in adolescents; however, they are serious injuries that require early diagnosis and treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a rare case of a 15-year-old girl who suffered a sleeve fracture at the superior pole of the right patella. The patient had a history of dislocation of the patella 2 weeks ago. Physical examination showed tenderness on palpation over the upper pole of the patella and absence of active movement of the knee accompanied by swelling and joint effusion. A plain radiograph showed an avulsed fragment of the superior

Unusual dental injuries following facial fractures: report of three cases.

We report 3 cases of unusual dental injuries following facial fractures. The first patient sustained intrusion of a maxillary incisor into the nasal cavity following a mandibular fracture. The tooth dislocated into the pharynx and was found lodged in the piriform fossa during surgery. The second patient sustained intrusion of molars into the maxillary sinus following maxillary and mandibular fractures. His treatment was delayed due to life-threatening hemorrhage. The third case involved ingestion of multiple avulsed teeth into the alimentary tract following severe maxillofacial fractures. Alth

Retrospective analysis of 514 cases of tibial plateau fractures based on morphology and injury mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Tibial plateau fractures remain a clinical challenge due to the complexity of the fracture patterns which have been repeatedly categorized by many researchers. However, limitations do exist in some respects. So we aimed to reclassify tibial plateau fractures based on injury mechanism and morphological characteristics. METHODS: Five hundred fourteen cases of tibial plateau fractures were enrolled. The X-rays and CT scans were analyzed. RESULTS: According to our observation and analysis, tibial plateau fractures can be categorized into the following six types: (1) Lateral condylar

Beware of the ulno-palmar distal radial fragment.

Five patients sustained isolated fractures of the ulnopalmar rim of the distal radius. In three cases the fragment was small and was classed as an avulsion fracture of the short radiolunate ligament. Palmar wrist subluxation occurred in all cases, four during treatment in a cast or splint. The ulnopalmar rim of the distal radius contributes to the stability of the radiocarpal joint and fractures in this region merit particular attention.

[Minimally invasive treatment of Lisfranc instability following bony avulsion of the long peroneal tendon].

In this case report we describe the case of a 24-year-old male patient with the rare diagnosis of an avulsion fracture of the peroneus longus tendon accompanied by Lisfranc instability. Due to the patient's young age we opted for osteosynthesis of the peroneus longus avulsion with simultaneous Lisfranc stabilization, which was performed as a minimally invasive procedure using a suture-button system. Through precise diagnostics and early surgical intervention, a complete functional recovery was achieved.
