The authors report a rare case of displacement and immobilisation of the eyeball by bone fragments. Emergency corrective surgery led to total recovery after two months.

The authors have studied 266 patients with multiple and associated injuries, 31 of whom were performed a one-stage osteosynthesis in fractures of the bones of the femur (36), the crus (23), the humerus (5) and the forearm (3). Before 1985 the main method of surgical treatment was open intramedullary osteosynthesis with Küntscher-type nails with drilling out of the medullary canal. This method was applied in operating 21 patients with fractures of the femur, 5 patients with fractures of the bones of the crus and 2 patients with fractures of the humerus. Simultaneous fracture of the scaphoid bone occurred in 26 (4%) of the 650 injuries of the distal end of the radius seen at our institution. These injuries occur after a fall on the outstretched hand with a pronated wrist joint and extended hand. An operative method of union and fixation of long tubular bones consisting in combination of the compressive-destruction and intramedullary osteosynthesis is described. The method is minimally traumatic and gives high degree of stabilization of fragment ends. Early functional load on the extremity facilitates the union of fractures.

The final outcome of 33 facial palsies (4 bilateral, 25 unilateral) after temporal bone fracture is reviewed. 11 immediate and 22 delayed paralysis were found. Women with anorexia nervosa have reduced skeletal mass. Both anorexia and osteopenia are less common in men. We describe a 22-year-old man with anorexia nervosa and severe osteopenia involving both cortical and trabecular bone who developed a pelvic fracture and multiple vertebral compression fractures. He was found to have secondary hypogonadotropic hypogonadism that was reversible with weight gain. This case illustrates the need to consider osteopenia as a potential complication of anorexia nervosa in males as well as females.

A new and simple operative technique has been developed to provide rigid internal fixation for all types of fractures of the scaphoid. This study concerns the results of treatment of 39 patients with 40 tibial fractures which had progressed to nonunion and which subsequently were treated by autogenous bone grafting and cast immobilization. Thirty-one fractures were initially open and nine of these became infected nonunions. Bone status and fracture rates were evaluated in two Yugoslav populations with very different dietary habits. In district A (Podravina) the daily calcium intake was about twice that in district B (Istra). There were similar but smaller differences in the intakes of other nutrients. Based on the study of the immediate results of therapy in 172 patients and late results in 123 patients with open diaphyseal fractures of long tubular bones, the number of poor immediate and late results were found to be directly related with the degree of damaging soft tissues at the fracture site. An analysis of the results also indicated their reliable dependence on the choice of the therapeutic method employed. A predominant immobilization of the fracture in a plaster dressing after primary surgical treatment of the wound and open or closed reposition of the fracture is largely recommended
