Isolated frontal sinus aspergillosis treated by endoscopic modified Lothrop procedure.

Aspergillosis is a common fungal infection of the paranasal sinuses. Isolated frontal sinus aspergillosis is extremely rare, with only three cases reported in the literature. We report a case of isolated frontal sinus aspergillosis that was accompanied by a contralateral frontal sinus cyst enclosed osseously. The patient was treated successfully by an endoscopic modified Lothrop procedure that permitted complete removal of the fungus ball and wide opening of the frontal sinus. The patient is without evidence of disease 18 months after surgery.

Usefulness of three-dimensional computed tomographic anatomy in endoscopic frontal recess surgery.

PURPOSE: The endoscopic bidimensional vision offered by the endoscope during endoscopic sinus surgery involves difficulty in visualizing surgical field depth which makes it difficult to learn this surgical technique and makes it necessary for the endoscopic surgeon to mentally create a three-dimensional (3D) picture of the paranasal sinuses anatomy. In particular, frontal recess surgery requires good knowledge of its anatomic position, also since it is necessary to use angled endoscopes, which distort the view, and angular instruments which are difficult to use. Purpose of this project is to o

Frontal sinus pneumatisation: an isolated finding or a sign of concomitant anatomical variation?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between frontal sinus pneumatisation and concomitant anatomical variations in paranasal sinuses as seen on computed tomography. METHODS: A total of 403 patients who underwent paranasal sinus computed tomography were allocated to three groups according to the degree of frontal sinus pneumatisation (type 1 - hypoplasia; type 2 - medium size; and type 3 - hyperplasia). In this unique model, the prevalence of ipsilateral variations on paranasal sinuses on each side of the head were analysed separately within each pneumatisation group. RESULTS: The type 3 f

First Record of the Sinus Worm Skrjabingylus petrowi (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) in a Pine Marten Martes martes from Poland.

BACKGROUND: Skrjabingylus spp. are nematodes that parasitize in the frontal and nasal sinuses of small mustelids. In Europe, the two species S. nasicola and S. petrowi are known, although records of S. petrowi are extremely rare, except in the former part of the USSR. The aim of the present study was to screen pine martens (Martes martes) from Poland for the first time for the presence of S. petrowi. METHODS: Three road-killed pine martens were collected in 2018 and 2020 in the province Lower Silesian in southwestern Poland. A complete necropsy was performed on the fresh pine marten heads and

Bilateral Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma: Report of an Uncommon Case Involving Sinuses of the Face and Orbital Cavity.

BACKGROUND Nasosinusal papilloma is a benign aggressive tumor. It usually occurs unilaterally in the nasal cavity and can extend to the sinuses. The diagnosis is made by the correlation of findings observed in tomographic and histopathological exams. The recommended treatment is surgical excision with clinical monitoring. Orbital involvement occurs in about 9% of cases of advanced SIP. However, there is no report of cases of a benign tumor that invaded the adjacent soft tissues. Therefore, our objective is to report an unusual case of SIP that bilaterally involved the nasal cavity and maxillar

Agenesis of paranasal sinuses and nasal nitric oxide in primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Agenesis of paranasal sinuses has only been described in case reports of patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). As agenesis of paranasal sinuses may contribute to low nasal nitric oxide levels, a common finding in PCD, we speculated that this condition might frequently occur in PCD patients. Patients referred for PCD evaluation were consecutively recruited for 30 months. In addition to standard diagnostic testing for PCD, a computed tomography (CT) scan of paranasal sinuses was performed in all subjects. 86 patients (46 children aged 8-17 yrs) were studied. PCD was diagnosed in 41 sub

Maxillary sinusitis in children.

In 169 children with a runny nose the difference between the group with rhinitis and those diagnosed as having sinusitis was indistinct. His … e produces distinct symptoms in the acute stage resembling ethmoiditis in children or maxillary and frontal sinusitis in adults. This type of sinusitis did not occur in our patients. Further investigation in children with a runny nose is indicated only in those with typical symptoms of an empyema.

A consideration of the systemic factors that influence frontal sinus pneumatization.

The authors present the embryology and comparative anatomy of the frontal sinuses pertinent to a discussion of the systemic factors which influence frontal sinus pneumatization. There are at least three important factors involved: 1) craniofacial configuration, 2) thickness of the frontal bone, 3) growth hormones. Various clinical entities which illustrate these points are discussed.

Frontal sinus ablation for frontal osteomyelitis.

Frontal sinusitis with frontal osteomyelitis is a potentially life threatening disease. Diagnostic and therapeutic errors occur frequently because of antibiotic masking of already silent frontal lobe complications or lack of suspicion on the part of the otolaryngologist or the neurosurgeon. Frontal sinus infection and/or trauma frequently require otoneuro cooperation for care. Four cases of complications of frontal sinus infection with osteomyelitis are discussed. Three had epidural empyemas and one had a subdural empyema with an anterior 1/3 superior sagittal sinus thrombosis and multiple bra…

[The endoscopy of paranasal sinuses. Diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities (author's transl)].

This paper deals with further experiences in endoscopy of the maxillary sinus and in possibilities of endoscopy of frontal and sphenoidal sinuses. Some coloured photographs taken during endoscopy are shown. As the result of 301 sinuscopies of maxillary sinus performed, it could be shown that in 36% of the cases x-ray findings didn't exactly correspond with the endoscopy findings. In further 22% there was no correlation at all between the x-rays and findings at operation. This shows the great importance of sinuscopy and reveals its diagnostic values. The author used the endoscopy of the maxilla

Endotype-related recurrence pattern of chronic rhinosinusitis in revision functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The recurrence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is influenced by various factors, potentially including the endotype based on the molecular pathophysiology of CRS. This study investigated differences in the recurrence pattern of CRS by endotype after primary FESS. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients who had undergone revision FESS for recurrent CRS. Based on their clinical diagnosis, the patients were divided into two endotype groups: recurrent eosinophilic CRS (rECRS) and recurrent non-eosinophilic CRS (rNECRS). We co

CT and cross-sectional anatomy of the paranasal sinuses in the Holstein cow.

The structure of paranasal sinuses in cattle is difficult to understand due to its complexity, age-related changes, and insufficient published data. In this prospective, anatomic study, we described the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses in the Holstein cow using computed tomography (CT) and cross-sectional anatomic slices. Twelve healthy adult Holstein cow heads were used for this study. The heads were scanned using CT, and frozen anatomical sections were taken. The locations, borders, and relationships of the paranasal sinuses were defined on the anatomical sections and CT images. The paranasa
