Aberrant resting-state oscillatory brain activity in Parkinson's disease patients with visual hallucinations: An MEG source-space study.

To gain insight into possible underlying mechanism(s) of visual hallucinations (VH) in Parkinson's disease (PD), we explored changes in local oscillatory activity in different frequency bands with source-space magnetoencephalography (MEG). Eyes-closed resting-state MEG recordings were obtained from 20 PD patients with hallucinations (Hall+) and 20 PD patients without hallucinations (Hall-), matched for age, gender and disease severity. The Hall+ group was subdivided into 10 patients with VH only (unimodal Hall+) and 10 patients with multimodal hallucinations (multimodal Hall+). Subsequently, n

Open-field PET: Simultaneous brain functional imaging and behavioural response measurements in freely moving small animals.

A comprehensive understanding of how the brain responds to a changing environment requires techniques capable of recording functional outputs at the whole-brain level in response to external stimuli. Positron emission tomography (PET) is an exquisitely sensitive technique for imaging brain function but the need for anaesthesia to avoid motion artefacts precludes concurrent behavioural response studies. Here, we report a technique that combines motion-compensated PET with a robotically-controlled animal enclosure to enable simultaneous brain imaging and behavioural recordings in unrestrained sm

Do we have distinct systems for immediate and delayed actions? A selective review on the role of visual memory in action.

The perception-action model with its assumptions of distinct visual pathways for perception and visuomotor control has been highly influential but also contentious. The controversy largely focused on the evidence from studies on perceptual illusions and this scientific field has been reviewed quite a few times in recent years. In contrast another aspect of the model, namely the role of visual memory in action control, received comparatively little attention. With respect to visual memory the perception-action model proposes that only the perceptual or ventral stream can maintain a sustained re

The Behavioral Neuroscience of Motivation: An Overview of Concepts, Measures, and Translational Applications.

Motivation, defined as the energizing of behavior in pursuit of a goal, is a fundamental element of our interaction with the world and with each other. All animals share motivation to obtain their basic needs, including food, water, sex and social interaction. Meeting these needs is a requirement for survival, but in all cases the goals must be met in appropriate quantities and at appropriate times. Therefore motivational drive must be modulated as a function of both internal states as well as external environmental conditions. The regulation of motivated behaviors is achieved by the coordinat

Two distinct neural mechanisms underlying indirect reciprocity.

Cooperation is a hallmark of human society. Humans often cooperate with strangers even if they will not meet each other again. This so-called indirect reciprocity enables large-scale cooperation among nonkin and can occur based on a reputation mechanism or as a succession of pay-it-forward behavior. Here, we provide the functional and anatomical neural evidence for two distinct mechanisms governing the two types of indirect reciprocity. Cooperation occurring as reputation-based reciprocity specifically recruited the precuneus, a region associated with self-centered cognition. During such coope

Emotion processing and regulation in bipolar disorder: a review.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BP) is characterized by a dysfunction of mood, alternating between states of mania/hypomania and depression. Thus, the primary abnormality appears to be an inability to regulate emotion, the result of which is emotional extremes. The purpose of this paper is to review the current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) literature on adult patients with BP using emotion processing or regulation paradigms. METHODS: A search was conducted on PubMed using the keywords: bipolar disorder, fMRI, mania, bipolar depression, bipolar euthymia, emotion, and amygdala. On

The Connectomes: Methods of White Matter Tractography and Contributions of Resting State fMRI.

A comprehensive mapping of the structural and functional circuitry of the brain is a major unresolved problem in contemporary neuroimaging research. Diffusion-weighted and functional MRI have provided investigators with the capability to assess structural and functional connectivity in-vivo, driven primarily by methods of white matter tractography and resting-state fMRI, respectively. These techniques have paved the way for the construction of the functional and structural connectomes, which are quantitative representations of brain architecture as neural networks, comprised of nodes and edges

Diagnosis, treatment, and functional outcomes for two adolescent female patients with lupus myelitis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Transverse myelitis is a rare neurologic complication associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), also known as lupus myelitis. Little is known about the optimal treatment regimen for the disease or the functional outcomes after diagnosis, especially for pediatric patients. METHODS: A retrospective case series at a large, academic pediatric tertiary care center was performed to describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, early treatment, and functional outcomes in two pediatric patients diagnosed with lupus myelitis as a presenting sign of new-onset SLE. Gerstmann Syndrome Case-Control Study: Correlation between Brain Lesions & Functional Disability.

Deep functional and structural neuroimaging of a series of Gerstmann's syndrome patients required high accuracy, and our results avoided false overlaps of heterogeneous brain lesions by handling each case of our study subjects separately as an individual case regarding functional and neuroimaging tests. Six patients with Gerstmann tetrad (one with dominant acalculia, one with dominant left and right disorientation, two with writing disabilities and two with finger agnosia) and 6 control subjects with close ages were recruited in the current study. In the main phase, we assessed brain activatio

Functional varying-coefficient Cox model and its application.

When data become increasingly complex, desirable models are required to be more flexible for analyzing survival data. Building upon the existing functional Cox model, we introduce a novel functional varying-coefficient Cox model and the corresponding estimation algorithms are proposed in this article. The proposed model can simultaneously handle survival data with varying-coefficient covariates and functional covariates, thereby significantly enhancing the adaptability of survival models. The model performance is evaluated by simulation studies, and a real application using Alzheimer's disease

Acupuncture for poststroke hemiplegia focusing on cerebral bilateral connections: study protocol for a randomised controlled neuroimaging trial.

INTRODUCTION: Acupuncture is safe and effective for improving the motor function of poststroke hemiplegic patients, but there still exists a certain gap between clinical practice and understanding its neural mechanisms. The cerebral functional reconstruction after unilateral motor pathway injury exhibits a bilateral tendency, however current studies seldom pay attention to it. Hence, based on cerebral bilateral connections, the underlying mechanism of acupuncture in stroke rehabilitation remains an area for further research. The results of this study will increase our understanding of acupunct

[Proliferative granulomatous arachnoiditis: an infrequent form of tuberculous myeloradioculopathy].

Proliferative granulomatous arachnoiditis is an infrequent manifestation of central nervous system tuberculosis. The mortality rate is 30%, and there are functional sequels in almost all patients. We present the case of a 22-year-old woman, immunocompetent that suffered form tuberculous radiculo-myelopathy with fatal evolution, which allowed us to confront neuroimaging and neuropathological findings. Although serial MR imaging illustrated evolution of lesions, autopsy revealed more extensive lesions that those observed in neuroimaging studies. The characteristic pathological lesion was an intr

Altered resting-state brain activity in functional dyspepsia patients: a coordinate-based meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies have identified aberrant activity patterns in multiple brain regions in functional dyspepsia (FD) patients. However, due to the differences in study design, these previous findings are inconsistent, and the underlying neuropathological characteristics of FD remain unclear. METHODS: Eight databases were systematically searched for literature from inception to October 2022 with the keywords "Functional dyspepsia" and "Neuroimaging." Thereafter, the anisotropic effect size signed the differential mapping (AES-SDM) approach that was applied to meta-analyze the abe
