Hazardous Gas Detection by Cavity-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Environmental Safety Monitoring.

We demonstrate the practicability of cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (CERS) with a folded multipass cavity as a unique tool for the detection of hazardous gases in the atmosphere. A four-mirror Z-sharped multipass cavity results in a greatly extended laser-gas interaction length to improve the Raman signal intensity of gases. For Raman intensity maximization, the optimal number of intracavity beams of a single reflection cycle is calculated and then the cavity parameters are designed. A total of 360 intracavity beams are realized, which are circulated four times in the cavity based on the p…

Assessment of the Actual Toxicity of Engine Exhaust Gas Emissions from Euro 3 and Euro 6 Compliant Vehicles with the BAT-CELL Method Using In Vitro Tests.

Legal restrictions on vehicle engine exhaust gas emission control do not always go hand in hand with an actual reduction in the emissions of toxins into the atmosphere. Moreover, the methods currently used to measure exhaust gas emissions do not give unambiguous results on the impact of the tested gases on living organisms. The method used to assess the actual toxicity of gases, BAT-CELL Bio-Ambient-Tests using in vitro tests, takes into account synergistic interactions of individual components of a mixture of gases without the need to know its qualitative and quantitative composition and allo…

Gas Delivery Relevant to Human Health using Porous Materials.

Gases are essential for various applications relevant to human health, including in medicine, biomedical imaging, and pharmaceutical synthesis. However, gases are significantly more challenging to safely handle than liquids and solids. Herein, we review the use of porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolites, and silicas, to adsorb medicinally relevant gases and facilitate their handling as solids. Specific topics include the use of MOFs and zeolites to deliver H2S for therapeutic applications, 129Xe for magnetic resonance imaging, O2 for the treatment of cancer and hypo…

[Household gas poisonings].

Exposure to toxic gases which can induce serious health effects, can occur in the working as well as in general environment, including home. The severity of gas poisoning is determined by its physical and chemical characteristics, intensity and duration of exposure, and concomitant diseases and injuries in the poisoned person. Manifestations of gas toxic action involve simple asphyxia, local irritation of respiratory mucosa, systemic toxicity, and a combination of these mechanisms. This article describes the characteristics, modes of exposure and health effects of most common gases causing poi…

Waste gas emissions, air pollution treatment, and industrial profit: evidence from China and global implications of green development.

This paper proposes a simple model to theoretically analyze the impacts of emissions of waste gases on industrial profit and mainly finds that industrial producers yield products to pursue profit but emit waste gases, protecting atmospheric environment demands for decline in waste gases, emissions impact profit when the process of production is altered as result of public regulations, and actively treating emissions ease the distortions of production and maintain profit. As a comparison, industrial profit is not impacted by emissions when producers are allowed to emit freely. After theoretical…

Research on the Release of Dangerous Compounds from the BTEX and PAHs Groups in Industrial Casting Conditions.

The assessment of the harmfulness of moulding and core sands is mainly based on investigations of compositions of gases emitted by liquid casting alloys during the mould pouring. The results of investigations of moulding sands obtained under industrial conditions are presented in this paper. A unique research stand was designed and built for this aim. It allowed us to determine emissions of gases at individual stages of casting a mass up to 50 kg. This approach enables simulation of foundry conditions. Moulding sands bound by organic binders (phenol-formaldehyde; furan), inorganic binders and …

Respiratory Emergencies and Management of Mining Accidents.

The rapid detection of the reasons for mining accidents that lead to emergency situations is vital for search and rescue work. The control of fire and gas leakage provides an immediate approach for rescue works for deaths or injuries and the detection of who needs resuscitation outside of the mine. The evacuation and recovery operations should be directed by continuous monitoring of the mine environment due to fire and explosion risks. The main toxic gases in mines are carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2); the flammable gases are methane (CH4), CO, and hydrogen (H2); the suffocating g…

Selectivity of volatile organic compounds on the surface of zinc oxide nanosheets for gas sensors.

The detection of volatile organic compounds by gas sensors is of great interest for environmental quality monitoring and the early-stage and noninvasive diagnosis of diseases. Experiments found hexane, toluene, aniline, butanone, acetone, and propanol gases in the exhaled breath of patients suffering from COVID-19, lung cancer, and diabetes. However, no studies are available to systematically elucidate the selectivity of these gases on nanosheets of zinc oxide for chemiresistive and direct thermoelectric gas sensors. Therefore, this work performed the elucidation by studying the electronic, el…

Distributions and sea-to-air fluxes of chloroform, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, chlorodibromomethane and bromoform in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea during spring.

Halocarbons including chloroform (CHCl3), trichloroethylene (C2HCl3), tetrachloroethylene (C2Cl4), chlorodibromomethane (CHBr2Cl) and bromoform (CHBr3) were measured in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) during spring 2011. The influences of chlorophyll a, salinity and nutrients on the distributions of these gases were examined. Elevated levels of these gases in the coastal waters were attributed to anthropogenic inputs and biological release by phytoplankton. The vertical distributions of these gases in the water column were controlled by different source strengths and water mas…

Noble gas and neuroprotection: From bench to bedside.

In recent years, inert gases such as helium, argon, and xenon have gained considerable attention for their medical value. Noble gases present an intriguing scientific paradox: although extremely chemically inert, they display a remarkable spectrum of clinically useful biological properties. Despite a relative paucity of knowledge about their mechanisms of action, some noble gases have been used successfully in clinical practice. The neuroprotection elicited by these noble gases has been investigated in experimental animal models of various types of brain injuries, such as traumatic brain injur…

Improving the resolution of permanent gas analytes using solvent gas in gas chromatography.

Gas chromatography (GC) using porous layer open tubular (PLOT) columns provides an accessible approach for the analysis of permanent gases in environmental samples and gaseous processes. However, unlike that in GC of volatile liquids, solvent effects cannot be readily exploited for permanent gas samples. This limitation arises from the low boiling points of permanent gases and the incompatibility of PLOT columns with conventional high-boiling-point solvents. Here, we report an unexpected solvent-like effect of a non-reactive permanent gas (as "solvent") on the separation of permanent gas analy…

A rapid and simple evaluation system for gas toxicity using luminous bacteria entrapped by a polyion complex membrane.

We have developed a rapid and simple gas toxicity evaluation system based on bioluminescence inhibition of a marine-derived wild luminous bacterium, Vibrio fischeri. The luminous bacteria were trapped using a thin polyion complex membrane in order to allow semi direct contact between the bacteria and toxic gases. Bioluminescence inhibition ratios of the present system to six reference gases, including benzene, trichloroethylene, acetone, NO(2), SO(2), and CO, were evaluated, and dose-response relationships were successfully obtained after 15 min of gas exposure, except for CO gas. The sensitiv…

Adsorption Capacity and Desorption Efficiency of Activated Carbon for Odors from Medical Waste.

Five types of odor-emitting exhaust gases from medical waste were selected, and their adsorption capacity and desorption efficiency were investigated using activated carbon. The selected gases included polar gases (hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3)) and non-polar gases (acetaldehyde (AA), methyl mercaptan (MM), and trimethylamine (TMA))). Commercial activated carbon with a specific surface area of 2276 m2/g was used as the adsorbent. For the removal of odor from medical waste, we investigated: (1) the effective adsorption capacity of a single gas (<1 ppm), (2) the effect of the adsorbed…

Identification of carbonyl sulfide and sulfur dioxide in porcine coronary artery by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, possible relevance to EDHF.

Incubation of porcine coronary artery rings and cardiac muscle tissue in Krebs buffer followed by GC/MS analysis of the headspace gas revealed two gases, carbonyl sulfide (COS) and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)). The gases were identified by characteristic ions obtained by electron ionization, and by comparison of the retention time on a chromatographic column (GS GasPro) with standards of these gases. Stimulation of the arterial rings with acetylcholine and calcium ionophore A23187 increased the levels of SO(2) and COS in the vascular tissue. We also provide evidence that SO(2) could originate from d…

A solid magnesium zincate for hydrogen-methane evolution.

Hydrogen-methane blends are gaining attention as transitional fuels, but their safe storage and controlled release remain a challenge. Advancing this approach necessitates the development of compounds and materials capable of solid-state storage of mixed fuel gases. Molecular precursors capable of delivering both gases from a single source are not known. In this context, we report a low-molecular weight magnesium hydridomethylzincate, Mg[(CH3)ZnH3], a crystalline, hydride-rich organometallic compound that does not rely on bulky supporting ligands. Under solvent-free, anaerobic conditions, it r…

Asphyxia due to oxygen deficiency by gaseous substances.

The determination of the cause of death in asphyxiation gas cases is very difficult because of the variation in circumstances surrounding such deaths. To clarify the cause of death and to identify the factors involved in asphyxia, the symptoms during asphyxia, the concentration of gases at the respiratory arrest, the time to death and the concentration of the gaseous substances in the tissues were studied using rats and six gases. Three inhalations were used: (1) rapid asphyxia (2-3 min) in the exposure chamber in which the oxygen was depleted completely, (2) prolonged asphyxia (20-25 min) by …

Effect of Carbon Dioxide's Injection Concentration on the Diffusion Coefficient of Methane.

The process of displacing methane (CH4) using carbon dioxide (CO2) in coal seams involves the adsorption and diffusion of a binary gas mixture in coal. Diffusion serves as a bridge linking adsorption, desorption, and seepage of the two gases, thereby affecting the production of coal-bed methane (CBM) and the injection of CO2. In the present paper, the adsorption, desorption, and diffusion behaviors of both gases were investigated during the displacement of CH4 using CO2 in coal seams. The results indicate that the CO2 injection process to enhance CH4 drainage from coal seams can be divided int…
