Barriers to free antiretroviral treatment access among kothi-identified men who have sex with men and aravanis (transgender women) in Chennai, India.

The Indian government provides free antiretroviral treatment (ART) for people living with HIV. To assist in developing policies and programs to advance equity in ART access, we explored barriers to ART access among kothis (men who have sex with men [MSM] whose gender expression is feminine) and aravanis (transgender women, also known as hijras) living with HIV in Chennai. In the last quarter of 2007, we conducted six focus groups and four key-informant interviews. Data were explored using framework analysis to identify categories and derive themes. We identified barriers to ART access at the f

Estimating the risk of acute malnutrition among under-five children in Uganda: a distributional analysis of socioeconomic and structural inequalities.

BACKGROUND: Under-five undernutrition remains a critical public health challenge, but national averages frequently mask how acute vulnerabilities are socioeconomically and structurally distributed. A distributional epidemiology framework helps isolate actionable entry points for equity-oriented policy. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the socioeconomic and structural distribution of acute child undernutrition in Uganda and assess aetiological specificity across alternative nutritional outcomes. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a nationally representative cross-sectional household survey. SETTING: Centr

Healthcare professionals' perspectives on a population-based lung cancer screening programme in Flanders: a cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. In Belgium, this burden is comparable, with high rates of late-stage diagnosis and correspondingly poor outcomes. While low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening has proven to be effective in reducing mortality among high-risk groups, Belgium has not yet implemented a population-based screening programme. The success of such a programme will not solely depend on public uptake, but also on the active support of healthcare providers (HCPs), who are central to its successful implementation. This study explores the per

Determinants of colonoscopy adherence after positive colorectal cancer screening: Insights from individual and municipality-level data in Flanders.

BACKGROUND: Timely follow-up colonoscopy after a positive fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is essential for the effectiveness of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs (CRC-SP). However, a substantial proportion of individuals fail to complete diagnostic follow-up. This study aimed to identify individual- and municipality-level factors associated with nonadherence to follow-up colonoscopy in the Flemish CRC-SP. METHODS: Individual-level data from the Flemish Centre for Cancer Detection (CCD), including 26,539 individuals with a positive FIT result in 2019, were linked with publicly availab

A spatio-temporal systematic evidence map of exposure to bisphenols and their alternatives: Social and environmental justice.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) and a growing number of its structural analogues and functional alternatives are widely used in consumer plastic products and therefore have high exposure potential. Social and environmental justice (SEJ) issues arise when exposure or health risks are unevenly distributed across populations. However, no global synthesis of their exposure levels exists. OBJECTIVE: To systematically map concentrations of bisphenols and alternatives in humans, visualising patterns by country, population characteristics, and over time, and identifying research gaps relevant to SEJ.

Sex differences in global burden of Congenital Heart Anomalies in children under five from 1990 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart anomalies (CHA) significantly contribute to childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Understanding sex-specific differences and their association with societal development levels is crucial for formulating effective health strategies. METHODS: We extracted sex-stratified incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for CHA among children under five from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 for 204 countries and territories (1990-2021). Sex differences were quantified using male-to-female rate ratios with 95% uncertainty intervals. Tempor

A perspective on essential components for adaptability and scalability to enhance equity-driven vaccination interventions: lessons from Mozambique and Malawi.

Global threats, including the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine funding cuts, and persistent health inequities, are reversing decades of hard-won gains in immunisation coverage, particularly access for vulnerable populations. This highlights an urgent need to rethink how immunisation programs are designed and delivered, ensuring they are adaptable, scalable, equitable, and sustainable. Global partnerships such as Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, United Nations Children´s Fund, and World Health Organization have been instrumental in strengthening immunisation systems and success hinges on approaches deeply

"I'm not going to be a guinea pig:" Medical mistrust as a barrier to male contraception for Black American men in Los Angeles, CA.

BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in unintended pregnancy and contraceptive use in the United States are not mediated by access to family planning services alone. Rather, a history of medical mistrust underlies Black Americans' adoption of new medical technologies, inclusive of contraception. Efforts to develop hormonal male contraceptives need to incorporate Black Americans' experiences and perspectives so that new contraceptives enable their reproductive goals and promote gender equity. STUDY DESIGN: Working with our community-based partner, Healthy African American Families in Los Angeles, Ca…

Racial and ethnic disparities in a state-wide registry of patients with pancreatic cancer and an exploratory investigation of cancer cachexia as a contributor to observed inequities.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is characterized by racial/ethnic disparities and the debilitating muscle-wasting condition, cancer cachexia. Florida ranks second in the number of PC deaths and has a large and understudied minority population. We examined the primary hypothesis that PC incidence and mortality rates may be highest among Black Floridians and the secondary hypothesis that biological correlates of cancer cachexia may underlie disparities. PC incidence and mortality rates were estimated by race/ethnicity, gender, and county using publicly available state-wide cancer registry data that inclu
