Transmissible antibiotic resistance and virulence genes in multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from pastured poultry and their environment in the Southeastern United States.

The pasture environment can be exposed to contamination with antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), which might spread or act as a source for lateral transmission of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in pasture-raised poultry systems. Data on the spread of ARB and ARGs in pastured poultry and their environment are limited. Therefore, we investigated the occurrence of ARB in pasture-raised broiler farms in the Southeastern United States. We also screened for ARGs and evaluated their transmissibility. Samples (feces, soil, ceca, and carcass rinses) were collected from eleven farms with 41 broi

Molecular and biological characterization of a newly discovered Kayfunavirus bacteriophage targeting multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli from swine feces.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli infections and their biofilms in swine and swine farms are a major concern due to their impact on animal health, economic losses, and the spread of antibiotic resistance. There is also increasing concern about the potential transmission of antibiotic resistance from animals to humans. To address these issues, alternative strategies to control E. coli infections are being explored, with bacteriophage (phage) therapy emerging as a promising approach. In this study, Escherichia phage vECPPW10 was isolated and characterized. Genomic analysis revealed a 40

Multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli causing canine pyometra and urinary tract infections are genetically related but distinct from those causing prostatic abscesses.

Despite extensive characterisation of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) causing urinary tract infections (UTIs), the genetic background of non-urinary extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) in companion animals remains inadequately understood. In this study, we characterised virulence traits of 104 E. coli isolated from canine pyometra (n = 61) and prostatic abscesses (PAs) (n = 38), and bloodstream infections (BSIs) in dogs (n = 2), and cats (n = 3). A stronger association with UPEC of pyometra strains in comparison to PA strains was revealed. Notably, 44 isolates exhibited resistance

Occurrence of Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella spp. in Raw Meat Retailed in Wet Markets in Chattogram City, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in foodborne pathogens has become a global public health issue. Salmonella is one of the most widespread foodborne pathogens worldwide, causing foodborne-related hospitalizations and deaths. Multidrug resistance (MDR) in Salmonella makes foodborne salmonellosis challenging to treat and control. Foodborne salmonellosis often follows the consumption of contaminated animal products, typically resulting from the use of infected animals in food production or contamination of carcasses or edible organs. Therefore, screening raw meats for MDR in Salmonella s

Comprehensive Genomic Investigation of Coevolution of mcr genes in Escherichia coli Strains via Nanopore Sequencing.

Horizontal gene transfer facilitates the spread of antibiotic resistance genes, which constitutes a global challenge. However, the evolutionary trajectory of the mobile colistin resistome in bacteria is largely unknown. To investigate the coevolution and fitness cost of the colistin resistance genes in wild strains, different assays to uncover the genomic dynamics of mcr-1 and mcr-3 in bacterial populations are utilized. Escherichia coli strains harboring both mcr-1 and mcr-3.1/3.5 are isolated and mcr genes are associated with diverse mobile elements. Under exposure to colistin, the mcr-1-bea
